Highsmith? She was an incredibly influential mystery/thriller writer.

Do we have any idea what? I know most comics work was uncredited back then, but I’d be kinda interested. Piece of poo poo or not she wrote pretty drat well. If I recall from the biography they just mention freelance work in New York, like ad copy and puff pieces for women’s magazines and whatnot, but nothing about comics. Going to the library tomorrow anyway, I’ll see if they have it.

You can check her Wikipedia page. Looks like lots of all types. War comics, westerns. biographies, some super hero stuff. No characters I recognize though

Highsmith wrote the original novels of The Talented Mr. Ripley (made into the movie with Matt Damon, and before that, Purple Noon with Alain Delon) and The Price of Salt (made into the movie Carol, with Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara).

In the times where she was working on comics, the comic book industry was basically a handful of studio sweatshops for writers and artists who were too Jewish, too Black, too Woman, etc. to get work with a syndicated newspaper strip or magazine illustrations or whatever.

Yeah, it’s this. To crib one of the Nazi fucks terms people buy these comics and others like it to virtue signal. Most of the people back/pre-order them just so they get a high funding number to show how people want these things compared to the evil WOKE mainstream comics. I doubt the vast majority of these comics are even looked at if they do get shipped out to begin with. But just like every other right wing rage funding, it starts to dry up because there’s always a new outrage to own the Libs over.

Maybe he should try to hop back onto the hot issue of the day and make another grab at relevance by putting in a Captain Planet style villain who was pumping chemicals into the water in an effort to turn the (Cyber)frogs gay.

He’s Jewish and he notes that they really tone down her bigotry and go out of their way to make her look cool.

Edit: for those who don’t want to use Twitter (understandable) one of his criticisms is that she never uses any language stronger than “Jewish” when talking about Jews. This is a lady who called the Holocaust the Semicaust because she didn’t think it killed enough Jews. It’s a major whitewashing considering the level of bigotry she espoused in her real life

I feel like the author of that thread went out of their way to dislike the book? I've read it, it doesn't sugarcoat her racism. It doesn't make her look cool. What it does do is make her look like someone who uses a veneer of cool detachment to conceal how hollow her life is, and her own terror at the idea embracing her queerness. That's the plot of the story, so to take aim at her having the occasional glib one-liner feels like saying Psycho sucks because Norman Bates owns too nice of a hotel. The glibness is what we should be attending to, not the surface-level coolness.

It's a quite good graphic novel that doesn't valorize Patricia Highsmith at all. I suppose one could level the critique that it's largely a story about shame-- at the core, about the shame of the closet-- which is why this shame is iterated in her embarrassment in working at comics. I think if anyone were to turn the last page of the book and think "wow, what a cool lady," they'd be a profoundly naive reader.

It says a lot, and not just about Van Sciver. If he has to put the hashtag on to make sure that everyone involved in ComicsGate sees his posts, it means that a lot of them aren't actually following him on Twitter. So CG isn't an orchestrated movement focused on him, he just happens to be the public face of it because he's the biggest name with the loudest mouth.

Says a lot about Elon Musk that he unbanned someone who posted CP and banned someone for posting gay porn.

CBR really died in a "boiling the frog" way - for years it's just sucked more and more gradually until you realise you can't remember when it was last worth a poo poo.
