It's kind of bonkers to see three named storms in the Atlantic who are all just harmlessly bouncing off the high pressure around the US and going straight back out to sea Looks like Desantis's plan to save Florida is working!

They’re now forecasting Idalia as a major hurricane. https://twitter.com/nhc_atlantic/status/1696090973372358812?s=46 Likely a category 3 before it makes landfall in Florida early Wednesday morning.

hard to believe it's not only going to become a hurricane but then also go up 3 intensity levels in less than 2 days while moving that fast pretty much needs to start rapid intensification now (35mph+ wind increase per 24 hours) to become a major by wednesday morning not impossible though, some of the gulf storms this past decade have blown up insanely fast

It's pretty normal for hurricanes to do that as long as there's warm water. Hurricanes are a big self powering engine where the stronger the winds, and the more coherent the eye, the faster it blows water up into the atmosphere and gets bigger. The only thing that stops them is that they blow off the warm top layer of water, then there's cold water underneath and they suffocate, lose their shape, and can't rebuild. Thanks to global warming, one of the biggest changes in the oceans is how deep the warm water is. So how even slow moving hurricanes can keep fueling themselves.

You'll see storms cross Florida and weaken, then hit the gulf and go big again; Katrina was a baby storm when it crossed South Florida, for example.
