Even if Stern was telling management to tell them to keep his name out of their mouth, hey whatever. They obviously came out of the gate gunning to "take him down" or whatever and use his name and whatever reactions as a way to try and boost their own profile. The long sessions bitching about ratings numbers, markets, back office poo poo, and Opie's grudge were the worst parts of a show that was doing literally the funniest loving poo poo ever whenever Opie wasn't ruining it. Opie sucked, gently caress Opie, all of his best moments are sociopathic cringe in retrospect.

Man, this was less nostalgia and more staring in the face what a poo poo person Ant is and what a broken person Opie is.

I stopped commuting by car in the early 2010s, and listened every once in a while, but not enough to have all the details on how bad things got toward the end, so this was the first time I heard a lot of this stuff. Ugh.

Going to choose to remember the version of them that was on WJFK and laughing my rear end off to the homeless shopping spree while driving around Christmas shopping.

I completely agree, it's jarring to listen to some segments/jokes now.

When I started listening to O&A I was in high school and listened to them throughout college. At that age I was looking to emulate whatever I could to be funny. This led me down the path of shock/edgelord humor.

I'd like to think that because of SA, and who I chose to surround myself with in college, pulled me off a dark path. It would've consisted of listening to "that Gavin guy" that I saw talking with Anthony and being suggested to watch on Youtube.

Finished up the podcast today. While I appreciated the trip down memory lane, it was interesting to experience it with a different lens.

My peak listening to them was right after college when they were on WJFK in DC, I had moved to a new town with no real social network of my own, and was living with my then-girlfriend who worked evenings and nights, so I was sitting alone in a lovely apartment doing lovely apartment things while they were on. Listening to O&A felt a hell of a lot more warm and friendly than leaving NPR or the TV on.

While a lot of their humor was pubescent, it was still funny, and sounded like a more extreme version of the poo poo that my dumb friends and I would talk about when we were dumb teenagers. 25 years later, WOW, the whiffle bat challenge, and the 6 o'clock queef are a hell of a lot more lame than funny, but to the podcast's point, what made them great was several funny guys sitting in a studio cracking on each other.

For a while, the show after O&A in DC was The Sports Junkies, who were 4 local dudes who mostly sat around and talked poo poo. Ostensibly it was about sports, but mostly it was four dudes who had known each other most of their lives talking poo poo to each other. I'm not remotely a sports guy, but left them on every evening because it was engaging just to listen to funny people bullshit around. The shock jock format let a 20-something me listen to a radio show that sounded like my young and dumb friend group that had just scattered across the country after college.

But man, everything in the second half of their careers has pretty much destroyed all that. They were absolutely killer for a moment in time, but tried too hard to keep that moment going for way too long.

It's been nearly a decade -- Jesus Christ! -- but wasn't the big reason Ant got canned was because the fans, sick of his racist poo poo, tweeted various racist/pedophile bits from the last few years of the show at Sirius XM so they couldn't really ignore it?

I enjoyed the documentary. But like most things it's always interesting to see things viewed in hindsight through today's standards. You're not going to ignore it (nor should you), but I feel like there was way more of a focus on the uglier bits and warts of the era. It's interesting to look back at the arc of shock jockery. I'd argue things like shock jocks and the edginess of the late 90's/early 00's grew out of aimless rebellion that started in the mid-90's after years of conservative family-values oriented bullshit that we endured culturally through the Reagan and HW Bush years in the 80's and early 90's. Unfortunately a lot of that rebellion came in the form of Limp Bizkit, Teen Week and asking every woman if she could show us her boobs, but you also probably wouldn't have things like today's increased secularism and more open sexuality if you didn't have people pushing the boundaries on radio and TV, fighting against the Parent's Television Council and religious right of the time.

The final years of the show weren't great and had some fine spots but it was circling the drain. Howard was better at adapting. O&A never seemed to get that, or when they did it was too late-- what was fun towards the end were the shows with comics sitting in and just talking, but usually they would rail about not being able to do racial humor or not having girls in. At this point I believe Howard had moved beyond his softcore porn TV model. I’d argue the most disastrous move for O&A was going back to terrestrial radio. It made them dumb down half their show for public broadcast standards (adding no new listeners since anyone in that audience had already left), but even still they were completely unable to work within new guidelines, which made them look more one-dimensional and likely started the death spiral of the show. I believe it was after this that Opie started focusing more on getting big celebrity guests in, once again tailing Howard. Which was never going to happen. So now the show sinks further, and now everyone's angrier and failing publicly. Now Ant's racism comes out harder, Opie becomes more weird and anti-social, etc. It makes me wonder what would have happened had they just stuck with satellite, softened their edge and kept talking to comics while letting Howard land the lame big celebrity interviews. They'd probably still be collecting paychecks today.

Watched the two episodes finally and aside from the general cringe-ness, one of the more personally depressing moments was a throwaway of a 2000s satellite exec saying "we don't want to have anything you can get on terrestrial radio." The talk side today has maybe a C- on this, but the music side gets an F. Anything interesting died around the time of the merger.

Yeah, it just got moved way up the dial. And it's joined by the Beatles radio, Tom Petty radio, Phish radio, Pearl Jam radio, Springsteen radio, Grateful Dead radio, Jimmy Buffett radio, Dave Matthews Band Radio, U2 Radio, and Bob Marley Radio (which replaced the actually somewhat good The Joint). 11 goddamn channels that are worse than hitting shuffle on an artist page on Spotify, because lol at them ever playing deep tracks.

The Lithium Deep Cuts "extra" channel is the most jarring for me, since that's the genre I listened to most like every 90s teenager. It completely lays bare that Lithium is just a 100 song playlist of the most popular songs of the era, while trying to sell Cornflake Girl, Paranoid Android, and Devil's Haircut as "lost classics of the 90s" and not songs that played ad nauseum on every "alternative" FM station in the 90s.

OTOH, every time I call to cancel because I've got better playlists on my phone and a backlog of podcasts, I get a $5/mo offer that I've yet to turn down. Clearly they know the actual market value of their product.

The indie rock station makes me the most furious, because they could be playing so much underground and regional music. Hell, just have a show for 2 hours a week where you play demos sent in by unsigned or unknown bands. But nope, here's Sufjan Stevens for the millionth time instead.

Yeah, I've been a listener for almost exactly 20 years (got sirius before a month-long cross-country road trip in September of 2003), and almost wish I had never known it when it was good. I moved to XM sometime around when O&A did and was psyched to be able to listen to them again, but watched basically everything else turn to poo poo. Their channel was preset 1 on my radio for probably a decade.

I had kinda just moved on to only listening to R&F and Jason Ellis by then, just because it had way more chill/positive energy, O&A got so toxic in the late oughts i had to punch out, and i was a die hard for years. i didn't even know Ant got poo poo canned and the show basically over until my friend told me the next week while hanging out.

i think i even listened to more Stern around that time, i never gave a poo poo much about the war and liked a lot of things about Stern's show just as well so
