This would definitely be a mistake to listen to some of them.

The only not good album she’s released is Lover and there’s still some bangers on it, even if it’s her weakest over all.

Everything post 1989 has been mediocre to awful. Lana has a very high quality floor, but she hasn't been close to the ceiling since Rockwell. Carly's post Emotion work is good but disappointing for not being Emotion side c. Rodrigo is tedious and boring music, but at least it's better than Eilish who is tedious, boring, and talentless. Solar Power is the most disappointing pop album of the last twenty years. Harry styles is the male Meghan Trainor, yet somehow even worse. The Weekend is impossible to take seriously as an artist or as a human being after The Idol. Drake is the most embarrassing human being alive. Dua Lipa is the Target of pop music. I think that covers everything.

I usually only listen to full albums and not songs. Are there any staple albums that have come out in the last 5-8 years I should check out to keep this pop ball rolling? I didn't realize how much I've been missing out on an entire genre.

if u made fun of Rebecca Black for Friday you're legally obligated to stream her EP, Rebecca Black Was Here, and her debut album, Let Her Burn, as reparations.

It’s not really a pop album, and it’s the best album of the 21st century. It’s pop adjacent though.

Emotion as a whole is severely overrated, even if it does include the greatest song of all time (Run Away With Me) and she’s released multiple better albums since. That 80’s sound is old and so was its mid 2010s resurgence; let it die.

I haven't had a chance to really bunker down and listen to stuff yet but I'm still here and reading. Thank you everyone, I've seen all the posts and I'm filling up my spotify. I have a job where I can fully actively listen to music so I'll come back sometime next week after listening to a bunch and say what I liked and didn't :) if anyone wanted to help me with more stuff. I've been listening to podcasts for ~6 months and fell out of love with music and this is pulling me back in, so I plan on sticking with pop and going all out on it for a month or so.

Oh yeah I forgot that I did listen to CRJ's Dedication when it came out and I liked it a lot and danced around like a little girl as if I'm not a burly man lol. I'm p sure that's the only pop album I've listened to since... Lady Gaga in the late 2000s? Not counting subgenres like 100 gecs or 8485 (who I love).

Swifties are actively anti-compulsory-service to the point that they’d go to jail, I don’t think they’d organize that way on their own

I know that the 1989 hype train is revving up but I think if she dropped a Better than Revenge remix right now it would hit number one and maybe bring about world peace

edit: the sheer number of people dropping him is insane but honestly Bieber alone means there must be something big, Scooter is basically responsible for his initial fame and shepherding his reputation through that period where Biebs was very publicly being a big shithead, for Justin to go “nah we’re done” he must have like, kicked a baby or denigrated Canada or something

I'm sure as hell not the first person to point this out, but does it feel like people are getting tired of new music?

A lot of really big hits over the last couple of years are so are 'old' in some way. They sample a classic hit (I'm Good, that one Kim Petras song that used Better Off Alone, Super Freaky Girl, Big Energy), or are covers (Luke Combs Fast Car, I think "Creepin" should count broadly as a cover of "I Don't Wanna Know"), are straight up an old song being resurrected (Bloody Mary, that sped-up Miguel track). Taylor Swift has a valid reason for re-recording her catalogue but the fact that she's getting decent successes out of it feels like a tell. It feels like people don't want new things, they want old things a second time.

Do you find something comical about my appearance when I'm driving my automobile?
There’s always been nostalgia booms. In the 80s, stuff from the 50s and 60s got popular again. You had a ton of stuff getting reissued or covered or bands aping a certain style like the Stray Cats. In the 90s, you had a swing revival. The only difference is that Brian Steltzer has nothing to do with this boom.

I mean, a decade ago you would turn on the radio, hear Werewolves of London only to get the rug pulled and have it be Kid Rock’s All Summer Long.

It's a piece of JUNK!
I guess it does kind of feel like we're waiting for the next big thing. We're officially over the pandemic and the disruption that brought, and the excitement over all our favorite artists coming back through the portals to defeat Thanos afterward. We've entered the Multiverse phase of pop music. Everyone can do everything and there are a lot of cameos, but who cares? There's still plenty of good stuff being made, but nothing is really dominating the field.

I figure it'll happen eventually though. And it's not like there's no great music. But it would be nice for something exciting to really take off and start a new wave.
