They look pretty neat going by at night. Part of the system is a big tank car full of water and a guy or two with hoses at the back that put out any fires kicked up by the sparks.

It also is to grind away fatigue cracks that have started to prevent them propagating any deeper and causing eventual failure of the rails. The clean and polished surface then reduces the k factors to increase the mean time before they reoccur.
