putting this here since it's not directly related to the current world cup but lmao how does this stuff get published?

quote:

The USA defeated Thailand 13-0 at their 2019 World Cup opener in a historic thrashing that brought the Americans criticism for their continued celebration of goals. Thailand were a team making their senior World Cup debut and clearly overmatched by the USA, who were just beginning their campaign that would end with a fourth World Cup title.

Thailand qualified and for the 2015 world cup and won a match against ivory coast. guess i'll just chalk it up to "lol grauniad"

Why does the NWSL play during the world cup?

It's not the regular season, but an in-season tournament that teams play mostly backups for anyway. Playing now helps keep some eyeballs on the league and keeps those who aren't in the WC at match fitness.

better than in years past where they actually played in-season games with depleted squads. although it did give us Crystal Dunn, Spirit of Vengeance.

Going to those games in 2015 was awesome. I’m sure she would have rather been in Canada, but she made everyone pay attention and make sure they never leave her out of the US squad again.

ehh, while it was a mere 3-0 at the half, the american women could've coasted to a group win when they made it 7-0 before minute sixty.

scoring in extra time feels unseemly in retrospect, but in context the champions really wanted to set off the fireworks to prove they were worth more attention than the usmnt who fell to trinidad&tobago. if you win 13-0 and don't win the cup you're a punk. if you do win the cup then it's only natural.

the thai soccer federation is run by well-meaning new money in a private/public partnership. they've improved the men's program marginally, enthusiastic front office but maybe not likely to win results. it's clear the womens side has a stamina issue, they play their heart out and when the dam breaks the defense disappears: they lost to japan 7-0 and failed to qualify this year.

that stuff gets published because london journalism is as insular and inbred as the typical football federation.

In non-"the USWNT is in shambles" news, the group stage of the NWSL Challenge Cup just wrapped up a few minutes ago.

Eastern Conference
Orlando @ Gotham wound up being the last group stage game of this competition (played 3 days after all the others because ), with Gotham needing a win against a hapless Orlando (1 point in 5 games, multiple dropped points after 85') to overtake the Courage to win the East, otherwise the top spot would go to North Carolina (Gotham only 1 point back but at +3 GD vs. +10). Mana Shim scored her first goal since 2015(!) in second half stoppage for Gotham...but that only brought them level and they could not find a second, so the Courage go on to the knockouts on 11 points.

Central Conference
The final match in this conference saw #1 Louisville go up against #2 KC...with KC bombarding Louisville 3-0 to take the top spot with 13 points. Louisville would wind up being the best #2 seed to take the final spot with 12 points.

Western Conference
OL Reign might not have scored a bunch (only 7 in 6 games), but when you give up 0 goals in the process, you really increase your odds of winning the group. They not only did that, but wound up as the #1 seed at 14 points (turns out not losing really helps!).

Semi-Final Matchups
#3 North Carolina Courage @ #2 Kansas City Current - Sept 6, 8PM ET, CBSSN
#4 Racing Louisville @ #1 OL Reign - Sept 6, 10PM ET, CBSSN

Been saying this: https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/aug/23/nwsl-soccer-wsl-overtaken-womens-soccer

quote:

Europe’s leagues are overtaking the NWSL. That’s a win for women’s soccer

The country that plays host to the most World Cup players is now England. That’s not down to anything the NWSL is doing wrong, but what English clubs are doing right

[...]

The first US pro league, the WUSA, drew most of the best players in the world. Sun Wen and Gao Hong from China. Sissi and Katia from Brazil. Dagny Mellgren and Hege Riise from Norway. Best of all, Germany’s Birgit Prinz and Maren Meinert, who was named the last MVP of the league a few months before scoring the tying goal in Germany’s 2003 World Cup win.

After the WUSA’s collapse, the USA endured five summers with no full-fledged pro league until WPS launched in 2009 with lower budgets and stronger competition for global talent. But it still drew many players of note in the 2011 World Cup from England, Sweden, Brazil and eventual champions Japan – including the magnificent Homare Sawa, the Golden Ball winner.

WPS went away the year after that Cup, and the NWSL popped up in 2013. In 2015, that league still accounted for many players from Concacaf neighbors Canada and Mexico, and the trade routes with England and Germany were not yet shut down. The best Spanish player at the time, Vero Boquete, bounced between the NWSL and Europe.

But when Spain beat England in the Women’s World Cup final on Sunday, no NWSL players were on either team’s roster. Only three NWSL players – Sweden’s Sofia Jakobsson and Australia’s Emily van Egmond and Alex Chidiac – were in the semi-finals. Only five NWSL players – the three who advanced to the semis, plus Japan’s Jun Endo and Hina Sugita – were in the quarter-finals.

Australia’s team shows the change most vividly. In 2019, more than half the team played in the NWSL, and another was in college at UCLA.

It’s not as though the NWSL has suddenly and completely dried up. The league would have had much more of a presence in the semi-finals if Brazil and Canada – and, of course, the USA – had advanced. In the Western Hemisphere, at least, the NWSL is easily the top league.

[...]

But the country that plays host to the most World Cup players is now England. An analysis of the official World Cup rosters, a useful snapshot that doesn’t take into account the predictable flurry of signings after the Cup, finds 108 players based in the sport’s country of origin, where women’s soccer was banned for much of the 21st century. The USA has 88, but when you subtract the players in US colleges, non-NWSL clubs and youth clubs, the number in the NWSL drops to 60. (The league site lists 61 players, including three that are on the way elsewhere and two that are on the way in.) Taking that calculation into account, Spain ranks ahead of the USA with 69 players at the Cup.

By comparison: In 2015, with just 24 teams in the competition, 29 players based in England were at the Cup, as were 21 in Spain. Most of those players were based in their home countries.

Between the Spanish authorities investigating for sexual assault and FIFA already promising an investigation... one hopes a contemptuous demonstration like this backfires on everyone there, not just Rubiales. Maybe it's naive of me to hope someone does something, but I feel like these assholes are forcing their hand by essentially daring them to do something about it.

Hector Bellerin & Borja Iglesias (both at Real Betis) called it out, might see more men's players in solidarity with the women too.

I also think about this a lot (Currently watching a lot more Spirit over DC United) but the drama of abusive leaders is ever present until someone strong willed like Kang comes along and just buys the team from the rear end in a top hat owners. Taking forever for similar actions to play out in Chicago & Portland, and notice how MLS/Garber have let MP keep the Timbers.

If it’s exhausting to me as a fan, I can’t even imagine what its like for the players and those few women in those rooms where misogyny is applauded

(A headscratching) Coach's decision. The two backups had split the games in the Challenge Cup, where the team had given up 0 goals in 6 games, so it's not a 100% stupid decision, just 95% stupid.

Anyway, don't want to distract us from what's going on in Spain. Now that the federation president's family is getting involved, I'm betting on a cousin of his creating a hostage situation at FIFA headquarters, because if we're going to get batshit, let's really get batshit with this.

In all seriousness, was nice to see all the "Contigo Jenni" signs and armbands this weekend.
