I like that there's a series of informants and bugs and potential assassinations that get SO CLOSE to nailing tony only to be foiled by happenstance or dumb luck just in the nick of time throughout the entire series, and the bugged lamp fits nicely into that category

His survival and success and freedom throughout the series is always hanging by a series of fragile threads, some of which he never even knows about.

oh, and the episode where FBI tries to wiretap their house, there’s a mix of Sting and Detective Music in a way that’s clearly non-diegetic

I really hated that. Just miserable, way too on-the-nose poo poo. Also it didn't make sense because it should be cutting back and forth between music for Tony being blissfully ignorant, then the spy music or a song about watching someone for the feds.

my favourite bits from those scenes are the multiple times Tony makes a (loud) point to show he knows they’re following him. too bad he was too dumb to realise they tried to bug his sacred basement, though. not that it mattered in the end

This is the problem with watching this show 20 years later, the cool stuff like that music mashup and the scene that went with it (which is objectively awesome) which was really groundbreaking at the time has since been done better and with more subtlety, so people judge it against newer stuff and find it lacking.

Also you have the Game of Thrones / Lost problem, where once you know the ending you can see which of the storylines were just nothing and not worth the time. The FBI stuff was definitely all wheel-spinning until they got Adriana.

IIRC, Patsy and Paulie were the only ones left standing in NJ and Paulie didn't want the hassle so, yeah, I think so. There wasn't much left at all of the Jersey crew between everyone flipping, dying or getting arrested and The Glorified Crew was in total shambles.

By the time Tony got murdered :smug:, who was even left? Patsy got promoted to...what exactly? NYC still has some chess pieces on the board, but Jersey? Patsy could clip Tony as an escape raft over the river to NY. The gently caress else is he gonna do?

Tony "came in at the end of this thing".

Yeah, they seemed to pull soldiers out of the woodwork whenever they needed to and there's crews we never saw, although in a weird attempt to hew to strictly keeping in the show at least once the Soprano wiki said Ray Curto was the only person in his crew despite also being the captain.

So, plenty of people for Tony to boss around when he got home from the restaurant. :smugdog:

Awesome that that article missed that her OF page says "The SOPORNOS" at the top.

Anyway, I ordered Xzibit's At the Speed of Life off ebay from the UK yesterday strictly because of Paparazzi. That scene is one of my favorites from the whole show, and a perfect example of how music is so expertly used to make scenes like that carry so much weight.

Dang, I remember thinking she should be in more stuff after seeing her in the Assault On Precinct 13 remake. Now, not so much.

Probably. Same with what's-her-face from The Mandalorian.

It's probably been said 100x ITT but I'll never stop finding it hilariously ironic that she's a chud IRL and Michael Imperioli is woke-adjacent or at the very least outspokenly lefty.

And when the Hollywood chuds get snubbed they always play the victim card... 'Round and 'round the projection prickly pear... 'round and 'round we go.
