Dynamite being so far outside Chicago was going to be a hard sell with the other two shows at the United Center. All out looks fine, Wrestletix has it at 9k out, Tony claimed today it was at 10k out (which is possible given Wrestletix doesn't track luxury boxes) so it will be well ahead of last year's show at the NOW Arena. Most of the Collisions aren't doing great but AEW has become a company that does a lot of late business so I don't really know if it matters, there's a couple bad looking advances for both Dynamite and Collision and then a bunch that look like they'll end up in the usual range.

Yeah, AEW's ticket business could certainly be stronger, but most of the shows that look like they're gonna be disasters based on advances wind up being Fine by the time you get to the show.

It's why I'm kinda rolling my eyes at the chicken little-ing about Grand Slam's number. It's a month away and it's probably gonna be the strongest TV card of the year. Will it be another million gate? That I don't know. But it'll probably get over 10k just fine.

The ticket prices might prevent that but we'll see. They'll probably hit a 1 MM gate before they even get to 10k. We'd be paying more than double for the seats we had last year.

Yeah I'm waiting for after the All Out card is announced to actually buy tickets so I can get an idea of what might be on Grand Slam. Or maybe they do a ticket deal like the Toronto Collision but I don't expect it, especially since it feels like they are going to announce a couple of big matches for that market given the recent returns.

Well, it's not Eddie winning the AEW World Title off of MJF, but it'll be an acceptable main event for Dynamite.

Proud and Powerful then win the tag titles off the Bucks in the main of Rampage.

One of those things that I'm not sure which thread it is relevant for but it is relevant for a lot of the discussion about wrestling business.

https://twitter.com/ERCboxoffice/status/1696366542815133813

When people tell you that only wrestling cares about ratings, being #1, competition, etc, I think it is important to remember the insane math that goes into being #1 at the box office, something that will be mentioned in national TV ads.

Gran Turismo was not #1 for a single day last weekend, or on Thursday when "previews" traditionally happen. These previews start at 3 PM in the afternoon. Yet because they add in the Thursday-Sunday gross + 2 prior weekends of prior preview grosses together and compare them to the Friday-Sunday gross of Barbie, Gran Turismo is #1 and is #1 by the accepted rules of The Box Office.

So when someone complains about how ratings are tabulated just think about the insane way #1 at the box office is tabulated, even on a weekend when it's just Thursday-Sunday for one movie vs Friday-Sunday for another with no other weird preview additions.

Okay, I didn't do Collision on Tuesday because I was depressed about AEW, so today you're getting a MMMMMEEEEGGGAAAAAPOST.

Collision Quarter-Hours
(As a reminder, the rating was 553k/203k (.16))
One quarter with no ads, QH1, which had the Jack Perry FTW retirement angle, an MJF/Cole video and the first part Eddie Kingston, Orange Cassidy and Penta vs. Kip Sabian, The Butcher and The Blade.
There was two quarters with double ads, both one PIP and one full, QH2 and QH5. QH2 had the rest of Ed, Or and Pen against Kip, Butch and Bla and the Best Friends, BCC and Kingston live promo. QH5 had the second part of Willow vs. Robyn Renegade, a Saraya video, a Miro video and a Kris Statlander backstage promo.

Peak in P2+ was QH2 (612/218 0.17), which had Keith Lee vs. Zicky Dive, the La Faccion Ingobernable video, Samoa Joe's live promo and the entrances for the main event. Notably, this had a full ad break, not a PIP.
Peak in 18-49 was QH1 (587/228 0.17).
No overrun this week.

I'm....not sure what peaked QH6 so much? Maybe something else was in commercial break? THE ZICKY DICE EFFECT IN ACTION?????? That aside, show was pretty normal. AEW's doing a lot of double ads and no ads quarters lately, I wonder if we're gonna start seeing some sorta pattern on what gets what. But also, I don't even know how much control AEW has over where their breaks go. I assume 100%?

Collision Rankings:
Collision was 10th for the night. Only lost to sports, which included NFL preseason games, college football, high school football, Premier League and Formula 1. This is obviously going to be the hardest time of the year for Collision, competition-wise. It's not getting any easier from here, regardless of who's on the show or not.

Collision Final Count:

It's the same as the Dynamite final count. Because....they were taped in the same building.

Dynamite Quarter Hours:

One quarter with no ads, QH2, which had the Orange Cassidy backstage promo, the FTR/Young Bucks/Bullet Club Gold backstage promo, the Toni Storm backstage promo and the first part of Chris Jericho's live promo.
One quarter with double ads, 1 PIP and 1 full, entrances for the main event and the first part of Orange Cassidy vs. Penta El Zero Miedo.

Peak in P2+ was QH1 (957/399 0.31), which had Jon Moxley vs. Commander.
Peak in 18-49 was QH3 (925k/421k 0.32) with the second part of the Chris Jericho/Sammy Guevara promo, Moxley backstage promo and Kingston vs. Yuta.
1 minute overrun with Orange Cassidy and Jon Moxley's staredown did 784k/353k 0.27.

Pretty standard flow. First five quarters were very stable, then it dropped in QH6, then again in QH7, with the two main event quarters doing basically 766/349 0.27. QH5 was the quarter with the Adam Cole promo, then it had the women's match going into QH6. I'm starting to think there's a not-insignificant chunk of Dynamite viewers who are turning on the show when it starts, watching until all of the Adam Cole/MJF stuff is done for the week, then turning it off.

What can I say folks, linear TV is finally dead.

Methodology: The listings below count the instances in which any of the related items appeared among the top items on the given website within the calendar month.

Reverse rank values were counted for any item that appeared in the top 50 on a given day. An item that was #1 received 50 points for that day. An item that was #2 received 49 points, and so on.

Keep in mind these rankings are merely an estimate based on those factors. We're making a leap in assuming that the order of top sellers on these websites actually reflects sales. There may be an automated process that drives the listings to appear the way they do, however, it's certainly possible the order could be manually manipulated.

At least one other disadvantage of this analysis is it doesn't give us information about the volume of actual sales generated from any of these items or wrestlers/categories. That's an unavoidable limitation of the data available, as all we have to work with is the order of the top sellers listings.

It's MMMMEEEGAPOOOOOOOOOST again. I kinda liked how last week's came out and I don't think Collision quarters are such a burning need for people that they can't wait a couple days, so I may just start doing this every week on Friday or so when the ranking info is available for Dynamite.

Collision Quarter-Hours:
(Rating was 345/144 0.11, lowest rating in the show's run)
Two quarters with no ads, QH1 with the Tony Khan video about CM Punk and the Ricky Starks/Ricky Steamboat/Bryan Danielson segment. And QH5, with the Rodman, Jarrett, Acclaimed segment, Shane Taylor and Samoa Joe backstage promo and the start of Britt Baker, Hikaru Shida and Kris Statlander vs. The Outcasts.
Three quarters with double ads, all one PIP + one full, QH3, QH5 and QH7. QH3 had a Dark Order backstage promo, Ricky Starks backstage Promo and most of Kommander & Nick Wayne vs. Aussie Open. QH6 had the remainder of Baker, Shida and Statlander vs. the Outcasts, an Adam Cole backstage promo, a Statlander, Saraya and Ruby Soho backstage Angle, Powerhouse Hobbes vs. GBA and the post-match angle with Miro. And QH7 had the Orange Cassidy backstage promo and the first part of Dax Harwood vs. Jay White.

Peak in P2+ and 18-49 was QH1, 472k/234k 0.18.
Low point was QH8, with Dax Harwood vs. Jay White, 244k/101k 0.08.

Show started well under the trend line and just kept going down, only briefly perking up for the Rodman quarter hour with no ads. Normally Collision gets a bump for its main events, but the drop was particularly severe in the last three quarters. Maybe one of the basketball-preempted Dynamites went lower, but I have to imagine this is some of the worst preforming quarters in the history of AEW's live prime time TV content. It's in the rough and it ain't gettin' better anytime soon.

Collision Rankings:
Collision was 18th for the night. Obviously the vast majority of things that beat it was college football, there was also Premier League, US Open and F1 racing in there. If you're looking for a silver lining, the only non-sports thing to beat Collision on Saturday was a Hallmark movie.

Dynamite Quarter Hours:
(Reminder, rating was 887k/409k 0.31)
There was one quarter with no ads, QH7 with the Adam Page and Swerve Strickland promo.
There were two quarters with double ads, QH6 had 1 full + 1 PIP, and QH8 had 2 PIP. QH6 had Roderick Strong vs. Trent Baretta and a Toni Storm backstage promo. QH8 had Darby Allin vs. Nick Wayne.

The peak in P2+ was QH1 with 982k/406k .31. QH1 had Orange Cassidy's promo and most of Jon Moxley vs. AR Fox.
The peak in 18-49 was QH3 with 938k/440k 0.34 , which had Aussie Open vs. Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevara and the post-match.
Low point was QH8 at 730k/350k 0.27.
There was a 2-minute overrun which did 835k/394k 0.30, the finish of Darby Allin vs. Nick Wayne and the post-match with Christian Cage.

This Dynamite was a little bouncy and the P2+ and 18-49 weren't necessarily in sync the way they usually are. The show started at its peak in P2+, but started low in 18-49, with five other quarters beating it in that stat. This Dynamite also felt like it had more full ad breaks at 5 and fewer PIP breaks at 4 and it used its double ads and no ads all very close together. Very difficult to get a read on as a result of all that. But all the stuff you would expect to preform well did, like the Jon Moxley match, the Jericho match and the MJF promo. One thing I do wanna talk about is something I saw some buzz about in both the discussion thread on this forum and in the general wrestling discourse outside this forum and that's Hangman Page and Swerve Strickland's segment.

https://twitter.com/BackupHangman/status/1699881911793955262

Everything Ibou says in the first paragraph is true, but his conclusion is based on a flawed understanding of the quarter hours. QH7, the Hangman/Swerve quarter, did 858k and 424k for a 0.32. It had a 2% increase in P2+ and a 10% increase in 18-49 over the previous quarter and it was also solidly above the 90-day trend line in both of those stats. The segment unambiguously preformed well for a QH7, which is usually where Dynamite starts to really fall off. QH8, meanwhile, did what Dynamite QH8s usually do and fell of a cliff, dropping 15% in P2+ and 17% in 18-49, both the biggest drops of the night by far.

I'm here to tell you, the reason all of this unfolded the way it did isn't because Roderick Strong, Trent Baretta, Darby Allin and Nick Wayne were all running off viewers while Hangman Page and Swerve Strickland were getting people to flip over to TBS. QH6 and QH8 had double ads in them and QH7 had no ads. That was always going to lead to a big spike coming out of QH6 and a big drop going into QH8. QH7 was the only quarter in the show with no ads, but was nowhere close to being the best preforming quarter in the show in either P2+ or 18-49, it was about a hundred thousand people under the MJF/Samoa Joe segment in P2+ and it was outdrawn by the Jericho match and the MJF/Samoa Joe segment in 18-49, despite those quarters having ads in them.

It being the only quarter with no ad breaks does signal something - it signals that AEW considers Hangman and Swerve's program very very important. They gave it a full quarter hour and didn't interrupt it with ads of any kind because they wanted the full segment to play out and not have people flipping around during it. It shows a lot of faith in both of those guys and a strong desire to get their program over with their TV audience and means whenever we get the match, I assume at Grand Slam or WrestleDream, it's probably going to get a pretty important spot. I just wanna make sure people understand the cause and effect at play here, and especially understand the effects of ad breaks and lack thereof on a particular quarter and an entire show. It seems like AEW is gonna keep using these double-ad and no-ad quarters, it'll be very interesting to see where they deploy what.

Dynamite Rankings:
Not number 1 this week with the US Open in town, but take one look at the steep drop-off after Dynamite. Kinda tells you all you need to know about TV right now and why Dynamite ain't going anywhere any time soon.

Both Excalibur and Tony Khan mentioned "over 10,000" at various times throughout the night, it remains to be seen if they were juicing the numbers a teeny bit to get that nice round number or it was just a little higher than WrestleTix's number for whatever reason. Either way, it outdid both last year's All Out and the first episode of Collision, I think Khan said it did around a $750,000-800,000 gate. Khan also mentioned that the show should do somewhere around 100,000 PPV buys. Dave Meltzer, meanwhile, is speculating that All In will land somewhere between 180,000 and 196,000 buys. Khan has been pretty enthusiastic about doing All In and All Out back to back as a tradition and after seeing how both shows unfolded at the gate and seem to be unfolding on PPV, I think he'd be crazy not to. A lot of people were wondering how the heck this would work and it turned out to be a pretty unambiguous success all around.

And today was the first day of general sale for another AEW PPV! Get used to seeing these more often, I don't think it's slowing down at all.

Collision pulled in 476,000 this past Saturday, which is more in line with what it had been doing and beat several older episodes.

Key demo was 0.15, only down .01 from 2 weeks ago.

It would seem all that drama for almost no real benefit. Hope they can push forward and be like 2021 AEW.

I'm still seeing the occasional Punk Stan banging the "BIGGEST STAR" drum and there's just.... virtually no evidence to support this. He's not an anti draw but any boost he gives is pretty negligible.
