Yeah, if there wasn't time to do it to the extent that they needed, just a quick "hey we're going to dedicate next RAW to Bray Wyatt" after the video package and ten bell salute would have been nice, just some reassurance that these people meant something past merch numbers rather than the cynical-feeling lipservice we got. I don't think there's much merit in getting mad at each other in the wake of a tragedy, especially during a time where it seems we'll have to turn to each other to get any sort of closure, but I think it's fair if folks feel burned by a weak response to a current roster member being cut down in his prime.

THE LIAR
I don't think it would've been possible to do something on the level of the Brodie Lee Celebration of Life, because Brodie had a whole-rear end faction, so you could pretty easily just pair them up with the babyfaces and have them fight the heels. Bray has Redbeard, who, granted, probably coulda done more than just stood there on the ramp, Braun, who's I guess still recovering from surgery and Alexa, who's I think on maternity leave. Randy Orton's injured, Seth gave his reason why he didn't go, Matt Hardy's in AEW, Bryan Danielson's in AEW and John Cena......well I guess he's booked next week, so he can't show up this week?

I will ask, uh, where the gently caress is Roman Reigns? He's probably Bray's most prolific opponent that's actually cleared. Given what Seth said, I dunno, I guess I'm not saying Roman should've shown up to do a tag match and recreated the finger point spot or something, but like. Where the gently caress is he? The dude held down SmackDown throughout the worst of the pandemic, dropped the title to Roman immediately after winning it, then immediately got exiled to Raw so Roman could do his Specialist Boy Ever reign, he can't be assed to pick up his phone and send a tweet?

I'm still baffled by the decision not to have Cody wrestle a Funk tribute match. He literally wrestled a dark match after the show.

The worst kind of tornado.

haven't watched Smackdown in ages, turned it on last night and tapped out after the first match on an ostensible memorial show for one of their most creative talents had a spot where Rey set up the 619 with his back to the entrance ramp and then had to stand there waiting for theme music to start so he could be distracted by it, while Michael Cole, bad guy Michael Cole, and Michael Cole with an accent talked about how handsome the guy doing a run in was. just the most by the numbers WWE content possible.

I saw someone say there would be issues with blood but it’s not like WWE does blood enough for that to be a real concern anyway. They could for sure do a fun hardcore match without blood.

i think wrestling society shouldn't have this idea that you absolutely are required to do 'the' tribute show as soon as possible for someone who has passed away, or else you are severely disrespecting them. in fact that it needs to be your next show whether it's the following day, a week away, etc. i think a company and the wrestlers who work there should pay tribute to the wrestler in appropriate ways throughout the next shows, and following that they could take the time to book and put together a really nice tribute show with proceeds going to that person's family. and nothing about that would be seen as a slight against a deceased person who was their close friend, not yours. this is my defense for if this ever happens to aew who i'd like to protect. i'm testing it here with The Wwe who sucks my bunger.

I would agree to this, Cav. I'd rather they get it right than get it out first. I would not expect everyone to do what AEW did for Brodie because well, I don't know if I've ever seen anything like that before it happened.

All else aside, I thought the tribute video for Bray was lovely. There's a hell of a lot you can say against WWE, but they do pull out some amazing video packages sometimes. I haven't felt that emotional watching wrestling-related content since I saw the incredible tribute they put together when Mean Gene passed away.

As sad as it is, they probably would've only mentioned Funk in passing if Bray hadn't gone as well. That's nothing new, I remember when I was watching as a kid when Perfect and Bulldog died, and they pretty much only got a quick montage and/or an RIP title card at the start of the show, but it still would've been nice to have a highlight reel of the footage they have available. I guess the "problem" there is that the vast majority of Funk's best work wasn't in WWE, but still, they have the WCW and ECW libraries, so they could've shown a bit of, I don't know, Funk vs Flair or the ending to Barely Legal 97. Maybe they did something like this (I didn't watch the show) but I've not seen anyone mention it if so.

Something Awful, so easy even a spaceman can do it!

Out of the evening (which had its beautiful moments and moments of just paint by numbers), one thing stood out to me. I began pausing the show on the Twitter images so I could read them. All of these wrestlers and people connected with Bray that are giving a personal glimpse of him. Then Vanessa Hudgens’ tweet appears and the tweet is how she has never met him but he was a good actor essentially. It just seemed so out of place until I realized that this was WWE trying to be like “look at a celebrity that liked one of our performers”.

For some reason, the one Bray moment that keeps popping up in my head was when they did the Wyatt Family vs. Roman, Ambrose, and a mystery partner. As Roman and Ambrose were in the ring, a fan jumped into the ring wearing Shield gear and stood next to them for a brief moment before security got on his rear end. Roman was confused, Ambrose was nonplussed, and Bray beautifully played into it by pointing and laughing, "This is your partner?!"

Maybe it's a bit flippant, but I really don't think putting storylines aside to let wrestlers talk about a beloved coworker and friend and have a bunch of fun house-show style matches with nods to him is nearly as complicated as everyone makes it out to be. WWE just doesn't want to do that.

turns out they don't treat their people any better in death than in life. this is a guy they fired while he was a top merch mover, and they fired his friends too. doesn't mean much to be in the "wwe family"

Eddie had both raw and smackdown and iirc, Smackdown was the one most of us remember the most out of. But it's also been almost 20 years.

I think you could argue that a lot of the guys who pass from old age (or age related circumstances, like Terry Funk) often just get a quick graphic and a ten bell and maybe a couple of people do some moves as tribute during matches that night. I agree that Funk deserves more than that and Bray certainly does.
