MK 2 was about $80 when I got it as a Christmas present so not quite that much unless you're adjusting for inflation.

I got some serious nostalgia reading this. Almost all of my computer games as a kid/teenager were pirated, because who the gently caress could afford $99 a game back then? I remember saving up to buy Space Quest 5 and it cost me about a month's worth of Xmas holidays paychecks because my stupid maccas job only paid me about $4.90 an hour.

But somehow now a brand new computer game today costs $89, how the gently caress does that work :catstare:

its partially economy of scale stuff but also making games is a prestige industry nowadays which means they pay staff quite a bit below market wages for similar skillsets in other sectors

Makes sense, but we were definitely paying a premium just for living in Australia. In 1994 I was lucky enough for my olds to take me to the USA and my $100 spending money got me Doom 2, Sam & Max and Quest for Glory 4, which were all relatively new at that point in time.

We paid significantly more for any kind of physical entertainment media, whether it was books, music, or movies, too.

Australia tax. Photoshop was notorious for that. Was cheaper to fly over to the states and buy it than get it here in Australia at one point.

Yep, and we had the most horrendous region coding too. We were lumped in with like south America, so it took ages to get the region 4 movies here.

Pretty sure I paid like $200 for Wing Commander 3 back in the 90's (was totally worth it).

My daughter works for the NSW government in IT and because the organisation gets unhappy clients all of its employees are entitled to silent electoral enrolment. She works in a secure building and has no contact with the public but the offices which do see the public don't even have security guards.

The shortest I've ever been with my partner (a quietly hissed "honey please shut the gently caress up") was in direct relation to her loudly asking me how my job in the Centrelink call centre was going in the middle of a crowded tram: as soon as she said the word Centrelink a bunch of people's heads rotated towards us like something out of a horror movie and a guy 2 meters away gave me the most 'gunna stab a oval office' look I've ever received.

When I was working there someone floated the idea of making branded polo shirts an alternative to shirt and tie as work attire, and I very much did not want to get stabbed on a bus, thank you very much.

My eldest daughter split her chin open twice when she was younger. One time it was stitched and the other time it was glued. The stitches left a worse scar than the glue.

My daughter's passive aggressive, incompetent manager has been reported to both HR and the union for hiring contractors through an agency instead of doing proper recruitments. The person who reported her is someone about to be assigned against their will to clean up her messes. The reporter has been with the department for 37 years, 30 of them in her current division. The divisions are currently being restructured following the departure of a key manager and incompetent manager is hoping to be promoted well beyond her capability into a new, higher paying, position which will be created.

Two directors has previously complained about incompetent manager, one of them being the director of HR.

this assumes the megadrive had more and better games available on it.

:hai:

also in honour of the barfathon I endured this morning I asked chat gpt to write a song about seratonin syndrome to the tune of john denver's country roads:

(Verse 1)
Almost heaven, serotonin's stream,
Feelin' high, like in a dream,
Life's a journey, with its twists and turns,
But serotonin syndrome, we must discern.

(Chorus)
Take me down, serotonin's flow,
To the place where balance grows,
Serotonin syndrome, heed the signs,
Find the middle ground, let your spirit shine.

(Verse 2)
Bright-eyed and restless, meds in line,
Searching for a mood that's fine,
But too much of a good thing can lead astray,
Serotonin's dance, we must survey.

(Chorus)
Take me down, serotonin's flow,
To the place where balance grows,
Serotonin syndrome, heed the signs,
Find the middle ground, let your spirit shine.

(Bridge)
Too much serotonin, a dangerous ride,
Nervous system in overdrive,
Watch for fever, tremors, confusion's haze,
When the symptoms show, don't delay.

(Verse 3)
Doctor's guidance, a cautious hand,
Balancing the chemicals, understand,
Finding wellness, both body and mind,
Serotonin's blessing, not to blind.

(Chorus)
Take me down, serotonin's flow,
To the place where balance grows,
Serotonin syndrome, heed the signs,
Find the middle ground, let your spirit shine.

(Outro)
So remember, in life's grand scheme,
Serotonin's balance is the dream,
Through the highs and lows, we'll navigate,
Guided by caution, it's not too late.

Honestly, if it was a single thing she should probably get away with it after being given a "do better" caution. But it's not a single thing. In addition to bypassing recruitment and promotion processes, she has also created a textbook hostile work environment and the organisation cannot simply overlook that with the threat of the union being brought onboard. They'll have to get creative in finding a way to deal with her.

Even Mega drive games were expensive. I recall paying the best part of $100 each for Sonic and Ecco in the early 1990s. I think the system came with Bubsy.

I remember putting together a pros and cons table for PS1 vs N64. I think I wanted N64 but I definitely put "games seem to be cheaper" on the table for PS1.

We traded in the busted Mega Drive and five games for a PS1 with NFS and that was definitely the right choice, especially as a few friends had N64 so we could play 'round their place. Then like 12 months later dad got us a Twin Controller Pack N64 when he bought a MFC for work so we lucked out in the end.
