The bathing together thing is whatever, they do things differently in Japan, compared to the US where we wanna get toddlers potty-trained, walking and bathing by themselves by age 4 if possible. I gave Mushoku Tensei manga the good ol ' college try back in the day and I commend it for the things that it does that other schlock isekai doesn't bother with (more in depth character interactions, motivations, and world building) I think I stopped around the school arc and then never picked it up again. And the more I thought about it the more I did not like Rudeus bc the author will not let him drop the creeper behavior and how that refusal to change the fundamentally awful part and frame it as comedic "tee hee, he's such a whacky perv" sours and weakens the story as a whole. At first I was like, "maybe it's just me, I like fun, I like questionable stuff!" So I tried picking it up again. I hate most of the content of mushoku (the anime) but I absolutely love the color usage and animation. I really want this company to do a non creepy fantasy show, but probably won't happen until the isekai phase finally dies.

I read a lot of Jobless Reincarnation up until midway through the magic school arc (the translation I read missed some chapters though) and even as obvious sucker for isekai stories I really don’t know why. The guy goes on a multi-arc quest to resolve his erectile dysfunction, it’s one of his main motivations and I have no idea why any author thought it was a good idea. Some earlier posts mentioned that they liked the world building and more in depth character interactions/motivations, but to me it felt like stuff happened kind of randomly over and over again. About the only instance of character depth that I thought worked well was Rudy vowing not to repeat the mistakes of his past life and do better this time. But he’s not a particularly likeable character soo.. It might not have cheat in the title but he basically does have cheat level magic powers, he just doesn’t really seem to have too many ambitions on how to use them and he had to “work” for them. There being a few characters in the setting that are more powerful than him (one of whom that is literally god?) doesn’t really change that. I watched Overlord anime s1 and it’s fun when Ainz is desperately trying to babysit his insane demon NPCs from messing things up, but not great at anything else. It feels like he does stuff randomly (I.e. becoming an adventurer for information, then not gaining any information from it). It also felt like they set up his guild as this unstoppable overwhelming force and desperately had to find some way to create a credible threat to him. So one of his subordinates gets mind controlled then he fights her 1v1 even though she’s supposed to be a hard counter to him, then he kills her and spends a shitton of resources resurrecting her. And the show tries to portray this as a genius move, but it seemed dumb and wasteful to me. ReZero I liked though, and I don’t really get the torture porn criticism. It would be torture if Subaru learned nothing, accomplished nothing, and just got beaten up all the time but that isn’t the case. Some parts of it don’t work and it is a bit weird how Subaru stays friends with people that murdered the poo poo out of him on other timelines but at the very least I thought it was an interesting deconstruction of the genre.

I like Re:Zero but it definitely falls into "torture porn" at times. It doesn't do that solely to satisfy the sadists, but it regularly goes farther than it needs to in order to get its point across.

Yeah, that's what pushed me away from it - Subaru does learn from what happens, but the frequency at which he dies and how he dies is rather disturbing.

Jobless Reincarnation is a series I got into after seeing a clip of Rudeus' Party vs Orsted in season one and finding it to be my favorite anime fight since GaoGaiGar (Guy) vs GaoFighGar (Mamoru) in GaoGaiGar FINAL, both of which are highly enhanced by having context from the greater series. Honestly an all-time great anime fight. I recommend this series to almost no one because Rudeus is so awful, he can only look good when compared to a few other Isekai protagonists but that's like saying someone isn't so bad when you compare them to serial killers. I personally have a soft spot for the series for a few mostly spoiler-heavy reasons from the light novels. Haven't read the webnovels, though. The anime leaves out a lot of Rudeus' internal monologue which is both a blessing and a curse, leaving that out of the section from the beginning of this season when he's depressed is honestly a huge loss for the series in my opinion. That was one of my favorite parts of the series.
