I like a lot of the world building and character stuff in the side quests enough to forgive how dry the gameplay of them are

Yeah I did all the side quests because just enough of them had actually good story in them that I didn't want to accidentally miss a good one The late-game side quests are mostly really good. They're still dry from a gameplay perspective but they start to get actual mocapped cutscenes and stuff.

the story and writing in XVI does a bit of a face-plant toward the end. the political intrigue and world building stuff of the start felt like it was building toward something and they kinda just burned right through it.
