They're pretty sure we're going to schedule a c-section either at today's appointment or next week, because while the human body is amazing this baby is not going to fit

Working hard, thank you!
I know that some women feel guilty about having to get a c-section when they wanted a vaginal birth, but this way she can rest assured it's just because she's too good at making babies

Some places that works, but half the time the sensor is a panel in the wall. If not it still makes the kids nervous.

yikes. the human body is amazing mostly in the sense that it can survive despite being such a mess of half-assed parts, and childbirth is one of the things our bodies are the worst at

anyway it will very likely be totally fine, good luck!

one thing we have noticed since having a kid is that the baby formula situation in the US is all hosed up, even beyond the frequent shortage issues

80% of formula is made by two companies, Similac (Abbott) and Enfamil (Mead Johnson). If you go with these big name brands they're always over $1 per ounce no matter where you buy them. In fact the price for the various versions seems to be coordinated such that it is almost precisely the same, and the ingredients are almost precisely the same. It's an obvious cartel situation and between them they represent the vast majority of the formula you actually see on shelves.

Your alternatives to these are mostly Gerber (Nestle), which is also expensive, extra-pricey EU/Australian brands, or Perrigo, which makes store brand formula. The Perrigo formula is almost completely the same stuff as Simlac and Enfamil but costs half as much (~50c-70c per ounce). Most of the store brand formula, including for Walmart, Target, Costco, and Sam's Club, are Perrigo. So basically, we just buy Perrigo. But the availability is super spotty, and it hasn't been stocked at Costco for something like six weeks now. So we face the prospect of paying double or driving around like crazy people from store to store looking for the store brand formula.

this poo poo sucks!!!

It's even better when you need some specific formula and regularly have to go to three different stores to find some!

Very glad my son left formula behind a month before COVID started

We use earth's best (because it's what the daycare uses). Looks like they're run by Hain's. You're absolutely right that that entire situation is hosed though and Earth's Best is some bougey $1.50 an ounce poo poo (that has the same ingredients as all the rest).

In Denmark we have some super special rules about formula, since babies kinda need it. I don't really know the specifics, but it can never go on sale or be part of some promotion, to ensure that availability is mostly uniform. I mostly notice it when I get a 10% off everything in the store coupon, because it specifically exempts formula, tobacco and maybe one other thing.

Also I think our supply is more secure due to not being a failing state and also a dairy country.

it's round, like always

same in the UK - formula can't ever be put on reduced price sale or purchased by promotional coupon. You can't even advertise it to the public, including accessories (bottles, nipple teats, etc).

in the US, if you buy a pregnancy test there's a good chance that the two major formula companies will start sending you free samples a few weeks later

Yep, that's also Perrigo. Anyway we ended up ordering some online from Sam's Club since the store brands are all wiped out around here.

Oh there's plenty of dairy here, that's not an issue. The real shortage problems came about from the biggest cartel member, Abbott Laboratories/Similac, getting so lazy and greedy that they actually killed some babies as a result of bacterial infections traced to their largest plant (after they ignored pitting and holes in factory piping for seven years, ignored whistleblowers, etc.), which triggered a recall, shut down the plant, and generally wrecked the entire formula market instantly. It's really funny that they can still charge so much their product after all that.

There is a lot of regulation around formula in the US and so if you are getting normal stuff it should all be the same according to my pediatricians.

does specialist formula for allergies not qualify as a medication for health insurance purposes?

the NHS will prescribe allergy formula like Alimentum or Althera if a baby needs it, even without a formal test diagnosis if a doctor suspects a milk protein allergy or similar.

I buy Nestle at 35c per ounce in South Africa.

There's an Irish brand here, Infacare, that costs 24c per ounce which I haven't tried.

I remember looking into this when that factory closed down in the USA and the price was in large part due to protectionist policies in the USA.

Provoked my kids during a long car ride and they retaliated. The older one wrote a story about playing Home-Alone tricks on me in Minecraft. The younger one drew a picture of me with a big butt labeled "A! BUTT! DADA!". The older one added poop coming out.

Must admit it's flattering to be the subject of their art but find it a little gruesome too. At least they're working together.
