As much as it pains me to follow such exquisite colouring with my scrawl, I thought I’d mention that my comic Vigils for Friends is back from a longish break with a new format.

I moved it to Neocities from Wordpress so I no longer get any metrics on it, it could be the most popular webcomic of all time and I wouldn’t know. I guess it probably is? Seems healthy not to know either way.

I love your webcomic, for what it's worth. It's very funny and charming. I've been trying to read it slowly in separate sessions so I don't run out of comic to read too soon.

Oh snap! I was idly wondering why I hadn't been getting new episode mails for a while. Looks like I've got some archive to binge.

Your comic is also getting posted in the PYF comics thread to pleased response by the by, if you hadn't noticed.

SavoyTruffle posted:

Yes, that works. It doesn't have a preview image or anything but that's less important than an update showing up.

Here's what it looks like on Feedly:

Here's Widdershins (another goon comic):

Here's what their raw rss feed page looks like, often the file is named .rss instead of .txt but rss readers don't care:
https://www.widdershinscomic.com/comic/rss

No need to change it if you just want to notify people about updates. Some comics will do a static image for their rss update, some will do a thumbnail or crop of the comic and you click through to the site to see it. Some will just plop the whole thing into the RSS as an image (like Widdershins). I use the feedly reader plugin on chrome to just open all the RSS updates which are usually like 1-10 and it will open a tab for each link in the different RSS feeds feedly knows has updated, but people have different methods. I think the main thing is just to have RSS so folks can read updates as they come out and there's a bunch of automated ways to do so.

It is a good, queer comic.

The thread likes to dunk on it, but I'm of the same opinion. It's honestly refreshing to see a comic go on this long and not become fash bullshit like Sinfest or go into weird looping lore arcs.

his earlier work is more interesting because it's that early webcomic thing where plots spiral into badly plotted sci-fi weirdness and melodrama. then he made a comic about toystore employees that's half "you are yelling and smell bad while I am calm and rational" and half extremely boring relationship drama. idk what he's doing now, but it's probably bad.

also somewhere in there he drew some porn of his characters for patreon, I have seen some, it is bad in an extremely boring way.

Let's do the space-time warp again!

He's currently working on Dumbing of the Age, which as I understand it is all the same characters from the previous comics, but reorganized into their own alternate universe where they are attending university. I didn't get through his previous works so I dunno much about it all. It's... fine? It seems like it's on par with everything else he did, so however you feel about that is probably the same.

I am impressed by Questionable Content's ability to introduce potentially dramatic tone-shifting ideas and then swerve, like 'Hyper-intelligent and super-powerful AIs are real!! They mostly just want to pet your cat.'

Yeah the most interesting David Willis got was when he was writing weird stories about aliens and poo poo. His penchant for drama has never really worked for me. Dumbing of Age is dull most of the time, interspersed with weird melodrama out of nowhere and Willis trying to do some weird repentance for having bad opinions as a dumb child.

It works alright as a device for saying that real life itself is weird with lots of huge changes going on all the time but we also just don't think about it. And mostly want to pet cats.

David Willis is pretty serviceable at writing cheesy superhero soap opera, which works out okay when he was writing a goofy superhero comic and less okay when he is writing slice-of-life comics.

Yeah he really needs to get over that. Like dude I get it you were a weird Jesus kid, a lot of us were, myself included. But you didn't go flog gay people in the street, man, time to let it go. I mean I get that setting his baggage aside, a religious kid changing/losing their beliefs in college is a thing that very frequently happens and it is ripe for drama, but Willis writes a lot of it with the subtlety of a brick. Or Ricky Gervais :rimshot:

Ultimately comics like QC and DoA need to be compared to newspaper comic strips rather than any kind of long-form story thing, and they're both miles better than most of those.

reignonyourparade

It's certainly fine to not like it but Willis's "fundie upbringing self-deprogramming" stuff is very blatantly more "write what you know" than it is "repentance." None of it is remotely written as if it's something he's still working his way through, it's written as stuff that he already IS 90% over and then went 'hey this is good writing material' about after the fact about.

Separately it's still a pretty mediocre comic.

Not to dispute your overall point, but she did give him her real name at one point, they're just sticking with the nickname. (most of the time)

If Oscar was capable of making good decisions there wouldn't be a comic.

Goddammit. I even went back and tried to fact check myself, but I missed it. I guess it's slightly better than I was thinking.

Still, I feel like the strong romance comic art the last couple of pages combined with being months in real life time since the kidnapping means readers are a bit more on board with this relationship than is justified.

I dunno, she's been pretty chill ever since she got out of the Existential Terror of the initial sprint. The first bad decision was innocuous ("try on this weird coat"), everything thereafter was panicked flailing at being thrown headfirst into the world of maaaaaaaagic
