Just got my ticket for the Clientele's album launch gig in London. £14.50. That's a good price for a gig in London.

The price includes a signed copy of the album on CD. :wtf:

Philly area nu-gaze. Playing with Teethe and waveform* who are both more slowcore. Should be cool.

I saw a post about this Australian dream pop/shoegaze band, Futureheaven, somewhere a few weeks ago. I think the music has an early/mid 90s vibe, and the video is a decent attempt at replicating something you might have seen in that era as well.

They have a 3 song EP out, which is on Bandcamp or Soundcloud. https://futureheaven.bandcamp.com/album/colourwaves-2

Spooky and Split are instant purcahses for sure, but I need to give Lovelife another spin. That "Ladykiller" single was fun, but I'm curious how that album holds up to its predecessors. Wasn't there a track featuring Jarvis Cocker on it as well?

Yeah, he did the male vocals on Ciao!

All the singles on Lovelife were good - the other two were 500 (Shake Baby Shake) and Single Girl - but they were also the highlights of the album. I'd say it's the weakest of the three albums and I might rank it below the comeback EP as well on a bad day.

It's the most "firmly 90s" of the albums, but the one I originally grew up with.

Also love the Love At First Sight cover on the Hypocrite EP. Also found in the Ciao! collection.

I'll be buying digital, but those were definitely albums I wanted remasters of. Split, and especially Spooky are rather low-volume affairs. Gala is the worst of them all. Wonder why they're not remastering that one.

e: probably a lot more work remastering a compilation, I imagine. They might not have all the master tapes for the stuff that's on it.

Kind of a weird question: Like 15 years ago, I suddenly lost the hearing completely in one ear (acoustic neuroma tumor). One thing I really miss is stereo sound. I use mono audio to at least hear both channels with one ear. So my question, what does mono sound like in headphones with 2 good ears? Is it somehow flatter or just less satisfying overall?

Ofecks posted:

If I do end up undertaking the task of mono-izing Distressor's album, I'll try to remember to respond here to report the difference. I don't feel like messing with it at the moment.

I finally sat down to do this. Installed Audacity, and mechanically, the process was easy. It's been a long time since I've used this app, and the last time I did, I had to download extra plug-ins for format support. No more of that, looks like everything is built-in now. It went something like this:

  • File -> Import Audio -> <audio file>
  • Tracks -> Mix -> Mix Stereo Down to Mono
  • Tracks -> Add New -> Stereo Track
  • Double-click the mono track to select all, copy/paste into the new stereo track
  • Delete the mono track
  • File -> Export -> Export Audio (I chose 24-bit FLAC); edit tags to denote new version
  • File -> Close, do not save
  • Repeat for each song on album

This results in a mono version of the song, mirrored to both L/R channels. So fake stereo, kinda-sorta. All instruments are front and center.

Unfortunately, the results are not great. I'm not even sure I'd call them "good". Audacity's stereo-to-mono mixer algorithm seems to reduce the quality significantly. Either that, or it's just computer science, dealing with digital audio. To demonstrate what I mean, take a look at this screenshot:

Top: the mirrored mono mix. Bottom: the original.

There is a very clear lack of depth in the mono mix. It's more of a squish than a mix, really. If Audacity is at fault here, my best guess is that it seems like it automatically tries to avoid peaking, and/or applies a volume-normalizing routine based on the lowest common threshold. Something like that. There were no options in preferences to adjust that process, nor anything in the CFG file that was obvious. I tried changing the Sample Rate Converter to "Best Quality" (it defaults to medium), but that had no effect.

Again, I don't know if that's just the way it is, or if Audacity sucks at it. Either way, this is not an adequate solution for this kind of music. I'll keep these altered versions (I also "squished" Trauma Ray's debut EP) in my digital library for now, but I'll also keep an eye out for a different way to do this. One thing I thought of was forcing my audio output in Windows (or my USB headset) to mono, but I could not find anywhere in the settings to do that.
