Yeah this is going to be the real test of "Were the O's right to sell high on him or do our coaches see something they think they can fix?" I'm not confident it's the latter, but it can't really hurt to find out considering he was really good in 2022 for us.

The topic of the slow uptick in game times came up on Effectively Wild, where they landed on probable cause is that pitchers have gradually gotten more comfortable with the clock over the course of the season. So they're now more likely to start throwing at 1 or 2 instead of 5 or 6. 4-5 seconds per pitch over the course of the game pretty much accounts for the average uptick in game time over the season. It does seem to have leveled out, though.

Yeah that’s mostly what I heard. That and batters getting used to how to use their one timeout effectively. As I said I haven’t seen numbers lately but I’d assume they’ve gone up a bit from April when this was all new but are still below last season.

Yeah, it's still faster overall, just not as fast as April. More importantly though, it's paced better. There's no more human rain delays or going a minute and a half between pitches with runners on.

I think the person who did this research for EW did try to account for scoring, etc., but there also tends to just be more offense in general in June/July/August.

Whenever a hitter sets up early and the pitcher uses every second, I anticipate a time out because that's how it used to be.

He's not postseason eligible unless he subs for someone (probably Bautista) but nevertheless: lmao

I don't think he'd be available, regardless? You have to be part of the org September 1st. The injury stuff is for circumventing 40 man issues. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, though!

Lopez trade was horrible for the Twins, but everyone thought it was a good all in move at the time. Weirdest part is that Cano might come out of it as the only productive ML player, when he looked unplayable with the Twins. Won't be surprised if Lopez finds it again with Baltimore.

I'm still kind of in shock at the deadline for the O's. They still have so many top prospects who are currently blocked by other top prospects already killing in at the MLB level, and they had clear needs.

My theory is it’s because there weren’t many sellers this year, the pickings were a little thin, and maybe asking prices were very high because everyone knows they have a prospect logjam.

Yeah the expanded playoffs means everyone’s hanging on at the deadline. Which means less pieces to get and higher prices for them. All while you have more competitors for the playoff spots. So Baltimore made the choice that they were young and this wouldn’t be their only chance so it wasn’t worth overpaying for whatever they could get. Whether that will pay out is anyones guess. Toronto, Boston, and NY struggling so much could be a one year window or could be the start of something. Baltimore is gambling it’s the latter.

I think it had more to do with not wanting to add any salary.

lmao that our big black hole, Ozuna from the Braves, went from "why the gently caress is this rear end in a top hat on the team" to near-MVP numbers

I am going to be sad if we get owned in the playoffs, but that's just baseball I guess. This has been the most fun I've had watching regular season baseball in decades.
