One Piece always kinda interested me but it was daunting because there's hundreds (if not thousands?) of episodes. I tried the first episode of the Netflix show and while it seemed fun I kinda lost interest halfway through. Might give it another shot and if I enjoy it I might try the anime. Been having a hankering for some mindlessly fun anime lately.

Does it have a lot of filler like Naruto where I I need a loving guide to know what to watch and what to skip, or can I just one episode after another without giving it much thought?

(Also I'll never watch Naruto, no matter how much a mate of mine tries to convince me. Even back in my teens it looked like all the worst weeb mary sue cliches mashed together and gently caress that. At least One Piece always looked like it didn't take itself seriously at all and is just goofy fun pirate poo poo, instead of wish fulfillment trash for angsty teens to fantasise about.)

The one piece anime is notoriously stuffed with filler, and has a pacing schedule which goes all Xeno's paradox towards the ends of arcs.

Modern day One Piece is basically not meant to be watched outside of Youtube clip compilations. I think the usual strat is to watch the anime until you get sick of the filler and then switch to the manga.

Some filler episodes can be alright, like I liked the Naruto episode with the teacher constantly comparing Konohomaru's pranks to Naruto's old stuff back when he was a delinquent, then realises he's failing Konohomaru in exactly the same way he did Naruto, by comparing him to someone he can't possibly compete with.

Ah that's too bad, but I'm sure I'll stumble on another anime the scratch that itch.

As for Netflix One Piece, just watched the second episode and I definitely don't regret it. The marines plot doesn't interest me in the slightest but I enjoyed the clown guy a lot. I'm guessing every episode is going to have a gimmicky bad guy and clown guy was a lot more fun than lady pirate, who just felt gimmicky in a dated 'what if pirate boss but female?!' kind of way.

i just want more Cannon Busters but I doubt we'll ever see more. my only IIMM with that was the guard the prince had in later episodes, and when she gets killed, he flips out when they barely had any time together, and I believe she was working for the bad dude all along, but the prince decides to ignore that. I know the prince is a brat, but drat.

random Turning Red IIMM: i love this movie but there is just one part where they could have made it a little better. after Mei panda's for the first time, we hear her parents whispering in the hallway. the dad says they should have told her about this, which the mom shushes. She should have added something like they didn't need to tell Mei, it didn't happen to the mom until she was 18, let Mei stay a kid as long as possible before this horrible thing ruins her childhood.

that at least would explain why no one ever told the kid anything. plus more period similarities.

I look forward to more sight unseen takes on the One Piece show from people unfamiliar with the manga or anime and realising how much of the goofy and insane poo poo is inherent to the show and utterly non-negotiable to any remotely worthwhile adaptation, changing or omitting it would be like Superman not being allowed to be an alien from Krypton or Hellboy not being a demon from Hell.

I think one piece is being created by a very skilled artist who exclusively creates character designs that I cannot loving stand at all, they are so ugly that I could never get past them.

It'll take you 3 years to watch all of One Piece if you watch one episode a day. If you cared. It's not like it's a blood pact, you can just stop if you're not interested by episode 8 unless you have some kind of FOMO problem with not watching every episode of a show you've started. Also One Piece is going to have points where the story takes itself seriously as it involves people and places that the characters care about, much like any light-hearted battle manga.

Also I don't know what you mean with that second half.

Half the fun of Dragon Ball Z is the filler where it becomes basically the Simpsons with superpowered idiots, half of whom used to be supervillains, who struggle to navigate everyday life.

One Piece also does a bit of that even in canon, a fair few arcs start with the characters having downtime exploring the new place they've arrived at, and the anime expands that into organic filler like Sanji getting in cooking duels.

That last part is certainly true, but I also got the impression that he was genuinely conflicted about where he would go with his life. Like, Butcher is everything his father taught him was cool and good, he might have been tempted to just say gently caress it and accept his role as the rising star of Butcher's gang and as his surrogate son.

Love me some 'team hangout' episodes. The general quality of the show was pretty high but Avatar The Last Airbender was pretty much always a good time, even if it wasn't one of the 28 episodes that actually moved the plot forward.

I'll give the fairy costume a pass because, hey, they're all creepy animatronics with borderline cheap covering, she's just the only one with "skin" covering her body rather than fur/feather/scales. What I don't like is her movements, she moves too fast and cleanly when the rest feel like they're animatronics with their movements.

Even the hangout episodes and scenes are part of the plot, given the show is as much about the characters and their relationships with each other and the wider world. Towards the end in particular the Ember Island Players and start of the finale hanging out around the old vacation home has some poignant moments.

Goku being this incredible martial artist and having impossibly fast reflexes and depth prescription yet being absolutely hopeless at learning how to drive a car always amused me. Like even Yamchas powers translated to being good at baseball. But Goku is basically SpongeBob behind the wheel.

Ghost Leviathan

Funny thing is it makes sense; Goku had up til then never really learned how to operate vehicles iirc; he's had the Flying Nimbus that basically flies itself, spaceships that do the same, and otherwise all his life he's just walked, run and later flown under his own power. Especially when learning as an adult, operating a car (flying or not) is something that none of his existing skills translate to- and of course he's absurdly reckless, because he's entirely used to moving at ridiculous speeds and very little being able to meaningfully hurt him. (also iirc his driving instructor turns out to be enjoying it) Piccolo is much the same.

That said, seems implied he's as quick a learner with that as anything, by Super he's shown to operate a tractor and a truck fairly competently (leaving Goten behind the wheel aside, though even then much the same applies to him, and both can lift said tractor one-handed) and being a pretty easygoing and sensible driver otherwise.

Saw Bodies, Bodies, Bodies yesterday and it was godawful. I could go on about how the twist is predictable, the characters were insufferable and a whole lot of other things, but this isn't the thread for that.

No, I came here to bitch about one specific thing: near the end of the film, the protagonist us fighting her former lover because the woman who took a nosedive off the first floor told her to check former lovers phone. That phone is supposed to have the texts proving that former lover and pancake girl were having an affair...

...so why the gently caress wouldn't you just grab the phone of the (very dead, defenseless) corpse, instead of fighting your friend for hers? Does nobody in this film realize that messages are stored for all participants of a conversation?

At least in the original film, the way townsfolk talk about it, it has a reputation for witches living on it, while the aliens had only been on Earth for a few years. So it's better to say that the aliens decided to hide at a location that has a reputation for ~sPoOkY~ things happening rather than being the cause of the spooky stuff.
