Lotta injuries. I hope over the next decade or so we start to see reforms that allow rikishi the ability to rest without completely dunking their rankings. Even something like a 1 basho medical rest with a small cap on the rank drop (they could call it the SMLA -- Sumo Medical Leave Act.)

I really doubt we'll see a reintroduction of Kosho Seido.

I think conceptually many probably feel okay with injuries just being a normal part of Sumo competition, an argument can be made that who's body and training methods are most resistant to injuries is just a part of testing who is the best sumo wrestler, in the same vein as why there's no weight classes. There's only 42 people in the top division, out of roughly 62 million candidates*1 (+foreigners), so whoever makes it is the will of the gods or something, you know?

I'm still not really sure how I feel about it, obviously it sucks to see your favorite rikishi get injured and lose their rank by not showing up, or by fighting clearly injured, but I'm just not sure that artificially loving around with the rankings is the way to solve it.

What I would like to see is significant cultural reforms on training methods regarding injury avoidance, wrestlers being encouraged and enabled to keep closer tabs on what's going on with their bodies, being able to understand when something is approaching injury instead of constantly pushing through the pain and training until literal exhaustion. You hear about how Usain Bolt never ran a full mile because he only trains for the sprints he actually competes in*2, so why are Sumo wrestlers having these hours long training sessions where they're completely collapsing at the end of them when their bouts only last a couple minutes, is it really the right way?

*1 Yes I realize it's technically way less because some people are babies and some people are old etc, but that's just part of it, they happen to be the wrong age at the wrong time, also the will of the gods.

*2 I'm assuming it's implied he's never ran it at full speed, he's probably jogged a mile at some point like any regular person, but maybe not

Marbling doesn't lie; the meat was very rich and fatty. To me it was delicious at the amount I ate but to a person more sensitive to oily foods, it may prove overly greasy. The trick that teppenyaki places do where they serve the cooked meat atop a slice of toast to soak up some of the excess fat would have improved this.

I ordered the "Yokozuna set" which includes all the usual cuts of beef and finishes with a chateaubriand cut.

The restaurant itself was very small. Only three tables plus one more in a private room area. I went very early and finished by 7:30pm and there was one other occupied table when I left. Chiyotairyu looked quite tired when he first entered the restaurant and let's just say that restaurant etiquette isn't a skill that's taught in the stables. Nothing that really impacted my dining and him sitting at the table next to us on his phone gave me the great opportunity to take the photo I posted. He was very friendly when I interacted with him after my meal and I got several photos with him.

If anyone else wants to try, I made my reservation by texting the restaurant's Instagram account and Chiyotairyu himself replied to me in English.

This news article seems to translate as Kiho has been able to do basic exercises, but is still unable to do actual practice matches. Haven't seen anything else yet, but I'd assume if he hasn't been able to get back into normal practice, he ain't gonna be in the basho.

I'm glad that Hakuoho is getting shoulder surgery instead of trying to fight it out in September. You would think with a generational talent like him that the JSA would want to have him wrestle as long as possible. I really hope that profession sumo gets past "you didn't train hard enough" as the answer to sumo injuries. No off season combined with no rank protections makes the wrestlers shorten their careers unnecessarily.

I'm also hoping that Shishi performs well this basho and gets a top division promotion. I kind of see him as the next Tochinoshin if he can remain healthy. He's definitely got all the physical requirements of being wrestler to me.

Unless they're just talking out their collective asses Sumo: The Next Generation Hakuho/Miyagino Kisenosato/Nishonoseki Terunofuji/Isegahama???? have all mentioned how they're rethinking rikishi health/recovery. You'd have to think even more so for Hakuho seeing as how his earlier 2 proteges have turned to dust, and he's at least walking the walk off the bat here. Luckily the Chosen One can miss a basho or three without losing his salary.

I feel like Terunofuji has to be the chosen successor here. He's got to be retiring soon and I haven't heard about him acquiring any other kabu, and I assume he intends to stay in the JSA since he got his Japanese citizenship. If he's going to get Isegahama he won't need to get elder stock for the interim period if he retires soon, because Isegahama-oyakata is 63 and Terunofuji's got the five year yokozuna grace period before he has to find a real kabu.

It's all but a certain (Unless Isegahama has a daughter for Shimanoumi to marry as well) which is why I put some faith in the rumors that Teru is gonna try to Hakuho it in November then bow out. He gets to spend a year in a blue jacket coaching before a peaceful transfer of power.

Remember, Hakuoho is currently kyujo, and I know there are some concerns about Nishikigi, but I don't think he's kyujo as of this post. Same with Teru etc.

This should be an exciting tournament, and we finally actually have some Y/O wrestlers to choose from. Let's go!

If you've never played Fantasy before, check out the rules. In brief: just choose 3 guys at each rank, and you'll be drafted a team of dudes. That's all you really need to do, although you can trade during the first week if you want (most people don't). It's really fun and helps you get more familiar with lower-ranked guys.

Pre-basho scouting reports informed my draft selection a bit this basho. Some rikishi, like Asanoyama, are nursing injuries sustained on the summer tour. I think my M1-5 selections are the most risky, but you play for the yusho, not just to hold rank. My ozeki picks were pretty difficult because I feel all three rikishi are in fairly decent form. I expect Kirishima to at least get a KK, but overall I feel that Hoshoryu has the best chance to scoop the yusho.

I think my biggest gamble is Takayasu. He should do well from M7, but his age and recent injury history could very well backfire on me. Regardless, I've had a fairly decent string of winning scores in the past few tournaments, so it might be a good basho to really gamble on success.

For the Ozeki, Hoshoryu's the only one I trust to put in a 15 day performance. Kirishima and Takakeisho might get to 8 and pull out/half rear end it from there.

I've been picking Kotonowaka all the way up and I don't see much reason to stop. Don't know if he'll be Ayushi contender but he's been super consistent.

Taka and Mita will either be in yusho contention from beating up people they should be a billion times better than or go like 3-12 from being completely broken.
