Labour party campaign launch tomorrow, only four weeks before advance voting opens. Seems really fuckin stupid to leave it this late but I'm not some big brain campaign manager. They will have saved a big policy for this though, watch it be some weak poo poo around dental.

Maybe it's literally a money thing, act and nats have like 5 times the money so they can campaign for longer.

Yeah I was in Wanaka as well and lots of natact signs (many vandalised). The drive from sh1 is always full of stop 3 waters signs and some random ones against the UN (?)

i barely even smoke weed any more but same. jacinda was at the height of her popularity, all she had to do was come out in favour and that would have put it over the line, and if nothing else police would have one less thing to harass brown people about. they don't even have the excuse that national would just undo it next time they're in because nobody wants to go against a referendum. oh no i might lose a handful of votes. what's even the point of getting elected? just absolute political cowardice.

Labour hosed themselves on so many easy slam-dunks.

Weed
Capital gains
Doing something about the supermarkets
The energy market.
Paying teachers and healthcare workers more so they aren't striking all the time.

I dunno I'm sure there's other stuff I don't remember. And yeah I know it's probably harder to do than just post about, but there was so much momentum for it and none of it happened.

Labour instituted a grocery commissioner to monitor prices and ensure legislative compliance. They've given agencies the tools to monitor supermarket behaviour as well as laid down the ground work required to reign them in. Labour has made amazing progress in that regard.

Labour acquiesced to the PPTA's demands. The only reason they strike under a Labour government is because they know that Labour will do something about it. That won't change under a more progressive coalition. The teachers unions are a democratic institution like any other and they'll continue use the tools available to them in order to progress their goals. I support the PPTA wholeheartedly and I firmly believe they'll continue to strike under a Green government for instance.

"National would be worse" doesn't mean Labour are doing well. Just using your two examples:

Yes, Labour have made sure that supermarkets can't just straight up break the law, but they've done nothing to address the main concerns that the Commerce Commission raised around the drastically disproportionate market power supermarkets have here. Just as an example, on the very last day of parliament Labour rushed through a code of conduct for supermarkets that requires them to pay suppliers on time, have plain-English supply contracts, and that bans retrospective contract changes. Labour have been in govt for 6 years and only just managed put in place a set of expectations that supermarkets do the bare loving minimum like paying invoices on time.

This is not "amazing progress", this is only just scraping the bare minimum.

The pay dispute was settled in arbitration precisely because Labour refused to acquiesce to their demands. The arbitration panel worked out the payrise needed to bring teacher salaries up to what they were in 2010, relative to the cost of living. What Labour had been offering (and what primary teachers settled for) was less than this, i.e. an effective paycut. The PPTA settled for less than their original demands, which was on average about 1-2% higher than what the arbitration panel recommended.

Okay well me being wrong in some limited situations doesn't change my overall point.
Teachers and other workers who work for the govt shouldn't need to strike, the govt isn't (or, shouldn't be, rather) run like a business who has profit as their bottom line and I would expect the govt to pay it's workers correctly AND give them conditions conducive to achieving their goals like teaching children properly (with teacher aids) and making sure people don't die. Teachers get paid poo poo but also they were striking (according to my kids teacher) for more teaching staff so they can actually teach better.

They are only asking for more pay to attract more people to the profession. Most schools have op pen vacancies they are just not getting suitable applicants for. Simple market economics says if there is a shortage you increase the price to attract more supply. The government is unwilling to do this.

It would be a staggered roll-out, promising free dental care for 18 to 23-year-olds by July 2025. The next year, it would expand to cover everyone under 30 years old.

Hipkins said most dental treatment would be covered – essentially everything except for oral surgery. It would see the Government pick up the bill for check-ups, basic fillings, X-rays, basic tooth extractions, and teeth cleans.

TPM don't need to break 5% since they are pretty much guaranteed to win Waiariki, and I'd be really surprised if Debbie didn't win Te Tai Hauāuru and Meka will probably win Ikaroa-Rawhiti as well. Debbie very nearly beat Adrian Rurawhe last time, and he's gone list-only this time so Labour are standing a new and relatively unknown candidate there.

This is third unrelated thread I've read today that's had a food derail.

This one is good, because all potatoes are good. Roast is good, mash with a heart-threatening amount of butter and parmesan is good, dauphinoise potatoes if you just feel like carbs, cheese and cream.
