I have a Ryzen 5600 and a 3060 Ti. I'm not expecting miracles on budget hardware but 45 FPS on medium ain't hot. The GPU is pinned to 100%, VRAM hovering around 70% and the CPU has lots of overhead so far but I guess I haven't gotten to any super dense areas yet. Weirdly, turning FSR on and off is not having any noticeable performance impact.

This game runs like poo poo. The settings defaulted to medium and I'm getting about 45-50 FPS in exterior areas, which is playable but doesn't feel great.

Are there any big performance hog options I can surgically tune down? Do those performance optimization addons on Nexusmods actually work?

The performance 'addons' (they're really just modifications to the ini file) did work for me. I used the one that has files for each in-game preset (Low, Medium, Ultra...)

She has personal issues and pushes away anyone that gets close to her. But you can very quickly flirt with her and then marry her within like an hour or two! That’s what I did lmao.

That's similar to what I have, except I have an equivalent Intel and for whatever reason the game prefers Intel to AMD CPUs.

But yeah this game is demanding and performs about as well at 1080p as most games do for me at 1440p (or frankly worse). I'm playing 1080p medium, and get a somewhat bumpy 60. A lot of time the FPS is rock solid, but it takes a dip in the most more demanding areas.

FSR definitely should help unless you're at a CPU bottleneck. For me at least that only happens in cities, and thankfully there's not much combat there so it's not that big deal.

That said, yeah, I was also really disappointed in how poorly it ran. I did not anticipate having trouble getting a locked 60 at 1080p. I think it's somewhat justified by the visuals (not always though), but hopefully there's still room for optimization.

It sucks, but that kind of performance will be more common with games that target 30FPS on PS5/XSX. Your processor isn't twice as fast as the 3.5-3.8GHz (depending on the setup) Zen 2 in the new consoles, so it won't get twice the FPS in CPU-limited scenarios.

If the audio desyncs stopped and the stuttering on combat was fixed it would be acceptable.

From what people on reddit are saying it appears that the game doesn't do efficient handling of sounds. Instead of caching a sound that is used for quick access or some other method that would decrease slowdown every gunshot requires opening, loading, and then unloading the file instead of caching it in memory for quick access. Since there's no caching being done it makes it a loving nightmare when you have two pirates with machine guns replaying the same sound over and over on top of all of the other audio clutter like impacts and footfalls (also, this is why some people lose the sound of footfalls when a lot of people are around). Incidentally, this means larger fights can be a clusterfuck of slowdown even on SSD's since it has to keep opening and replaying the same audio files over and over again. Probably not entirely good for the SSD too, but modern ones are better than the early models.

Incidentally, this might be why random ships taking off and landing can cause extreme lag. Since not only is it having to play the same roaring thrusters over and over but it also has to load new enterable zone.

This gets even worse if the game is on the drive with the OS according to some folks. Since now it has to split it's effort between the system files and the game itself. Which is just :stare: to think that that passed quality assurance to release if true.

Not sure why they thought it was a good idea to part with a tried and true way to avoid slowdown and desyncs but it explains it. If they don't fix it maybe mods can do something, though the job of going over that would be a nightmare if it's even possible.

To be honest I think that's reasonable, most motherboards from the last 4 years have NVMe slots, everyone's building for SSDs now the consoles have them and the drives have gotten hella cheap. You're not going to get huge storage for the price like a HDD but a 1tb boot drive+2tb game drive is probably going to become a pretty standard PC build setup until the next big storage development.

I don't have a problem with Sarah but then again my character isn't doing a lot of crimes

I want to have like extended theological debates with Matteo though.

POI density is pretty clearly set up so you're never more than a minute or two from something to do, so I can't say it's all bad because that's an understandable design choice and sometimes I absolutely want to kill poo poo in which case it's great. They were never trying to make the kind of game where they would be comfortable giving you long periods of nothing to contemplate in, but I do wish it was a bit more tuned to the type of world you are on.

Even if they don't want to have landings with literally no POIs, they should probably have it so that if you're out in the sticks on some moon that doesn't even have a name, you'll see one or two POIs in the average landing area, otherwise you kinda feel like not only has the world been visited before but it's practically urbanized. Or make them much rarer overall but let orbital scans play a role, so you can see from orbit that a landing site has abandoned facilities or something and you can zip down to check them out. Hell you can tie it into your perks, start out just being able to see 'there's some buildings' and work up to knowing what kind of site it is and who currently occupies it.

Well I’m 50 hours in and here’s what I think:

- Anyone who says you should bum rush the main quest to get to NG+ is a moron, you should definitely not do this or try to treat a Bethesda RPG like a Soulsborne or Diablo game. It just takes too long, and you see and do too much for the game to still be engaging if you’re reset to zero. I’m now at a state where I already know the ending and have unwittingly passed a bunch of points of no return, but I didn’t get to do most of the poo poo I wanted to do and don’t feel like starting over.

- Make sure you save a LOT, it is, again, a Bethesda RPG and I lost 2 hours tonight because my ship glitched, and of course this meant a faction became hostile to me and I lost all progress with my follower

- I was playing Fallout New Vegas up until the day game came out… how have they not improved the facial animations? Instead they add really badly modeled teeth, so everyone looks like a Wallace and Grommet character

Anyway 8/10, would be 10/10 if I hadn’t trusted some extraordinarily dumbshit games journalism telling me to spoil the first Bethesda RPG game in almost 10 years as quickly as possible

counterpoint: NG+ wiping everything from your save file means that doing a maximalist single playthrough will lead to increasingly empty NG+ cycles. probably better to spread the content out across the largest possible number of NG+ cycles you can stomach

Sarah is legit the worst companion I can remember in any bethesda game, if she isn't nagging you for everything she's commenting on things with the most passive aggressive tone I've heard in a while.

At the end of the game my game somehow thought she sas one of my "favorite" companions and when I realized it was either her or sam I flew my rear end to sam as quick as I possibly could. "we're gonna hold a memorial for sarah in 5 days, hope you'll come" lmao yeah nah

To be fair, none of the companions are really doing it for me. We've got cowboy cosplayer coasting on his family legacy, british marge simpson, joss whedon insert, socially akward spyninja, and robot. Vasco is by far the most enjoyable of the bunch. Having him go "I am glad you survived your scheduled sleep cycle" was a good chuckle the first time I heard it. Andreja is also cool enough, but she's kinda stiff.

Ng+ talk: I rushed the main story yesterday after 25 hours or so, and personally I don't really recommend it over finishing what you want to and then doing it. The rewards and consequences aren't all that good, and having to start from scratch really isn't that fun. It really feels like a "do it when you feel like picking up the game again in a while" mode.
