Welcome to the 2023 edition of 1KYOB! One Thousand Yards or Bust (1KYOB) is a game that's all about getting as close as you can to 1000 yards each week, via assembling a team of active players from any and all teams in a way which (hopefully!) has their yardage add up to less than or equal to 1000 yards. More than 1000 yards, you bust and you go to the bottom of the rankings for the week. Think of it as somewhere between fantasy football and the casino game of 21! Each week of the regular season corresponds to a week of the 1KYOB season, and the first three weeks of the playoffs correspond to the 1KYOB playoffs. During the regular season I'll sum up everyone's weekly score to keep track of the rankings, which are used to determine the playoff seeding (and any playoff-specific benefits/advantages). Once seeded, the playoffs continue as a series of three strict elimination weeks with only the top 1/3 of the field progressing each week, ultimately leading to a single survivor.....the 1KYOB champion. If you're a new player and you want to know more, then head down to the 'How do I play 1000 Yards or Bust' section in the second post below. If you're a 1KYOB veteran - welcome back! Head on to the next section. Notes for returning players The focus for this year is simplicity and regularity. It's no secret that the scoring has fallen behind schedule in previous years, which naturally hurts the player base's interest in keeping up with the game each week. The complexity of the game has also increased due to more tokens being added, each with their own ruleset and synergy with the other tokens. Most players did not use these tokens so this complexity did not improve the game. So I've made some changes to the rules, and I acknowledge that I need to do a better job of keeping up with the scoring for the game to be interesting. Firstly, the number of tokens has been reduced. The 'classic' tokens - Rushing defense (Donald), Receiving defense (Professor), QB defense (Watt), and the top-score gamble (Minerals) - all return. The more recent Genius token (normal token refresh) also returns. The remainder - Jennings, Cowardice and Gametime - have been removed. Secondly, the number of players that make the playoffs will scale with the number of players that we get during the season. In previous seasons it was always the top 27 players, but we've had fewer players than this for at least one season so it makes the regular season feel a bit pointless. The format of the playoffs will be similar, i.e. three elimination rounds coinciding with the Wildcard, Divisional and Conference weeks. The number of players eliminated in each round will also scale with the number of players that make the playoffs. Thirdly, the value of a particular place will be the same across all weeks, regardless of the number of players that play in each week. Previously, if there were say 20 players in week 1, then first place in week 1 would receive 20 points, second 19, and so on down to 1 for last place. However, if there were only 3 players in week 10, then first place in week 10 would only receive 3 points, no matter how good the player's score was. Due to player attrition during the season, this made later weeks less valuable points-wise and thus submitting an entry became less appealing. It also hurt any players that did end up joining partway through the season as it became harder to catch up to existing players due to there being less points available each week. So the scoring will be revised to work as follows:
For more info, head down to the 'How do I play 1000 Yards or Bust' section in the second post below. The MNF Number for 2023 Every entry is required to have one - and only one - player from one of the Monday Night Football teams to be considered a valid entry. This player is referred to as the MNF Number. The name for the mandatory MNF number has changed from season to season and typically refers to the winner of the previous season's Superbowl. Last year it was called the Long Suffering Goofball (or LSG) Number in honour of Matt Stafford, however this year it will be known as... The Barbecue Enthusiast Number or BBQ for short He'd be happier if it was rib sauce Make sure you use BBQ instead of LSG in your entries.

How do I play 1000 Yards or Bust? The 1KYOB season is structured as follows:
Every week during the regular season, each player posts list of offensive players and lists whether they wish to count their passing, rushing, or receiving yards for that week's game. The goal is to get as close to 1000 total yards without going over. Only Rushing, Receiving, and Passing yards can be used. The player with the highest total yards <= 1000 is awarded first place for the week, followed by all players that did not exceed 1000 yards in descending order of yards, then followed by all players that exceeded 1000 yards in ascending order of yards. Basically, the further over 1000 yards you go, the worse your score, and not busting always gives a higher score than busting. At the end of the regular season, the top performing players by overall score will gain entry into the playoffs. The number of players making the playoffs will be based on the total number of players that we get over the course of the season, and over the first two rounds (Wildcard/Divisional) players will be progressively eliminated until we're left with the three finalists. These three will face off in the Conference week and the winner will be crowned the 1KYOB champion! Apart from gaining entry to the playoffs, players that finish near the top of the table over the course of the regular season will also gain extra tokens to give them a competitive advantage during the playoffs, so it's worth doing better during the regular season to get that edge in the playoffs. How do I submit an entry? To submit an entry, post in this thread with the list of players that you want to use for the week. Lists are formatted as such: DEN - Peyton Manning - Passing Yards MIN - Adrian Peterson - Rushing Yards DET - Calvin Johnson - Receiving Yards BBQ#: PHI - Carson Wentz - Passing Yards (this is your MNF player i.e. BBQ number, see below) You can use as many players as you like. You don't necessarily have to use the player's native position's stats. Which allows for Matt Ryan's Rushing Yards or a running back's receiving yards. You can use a player more than once but you cannot use the same combination of player and yardage type more than once, e.g. you can list Cam Newton for both Passing and Rushing yards but you can't list Cam Newton for Passing yards twice. Obviously, players can only be added to a list before their respective games start, so if you wake up halfway through the 1pm games on Sunday and realize you haven't submitted a list yet, you can still cobble one together from the afternoon games and be fine. Once the game of the first player on your list to play starts, your list is FINAL for the week and cannot be edited. If you want to make changes to your list before the games start that's fine, but please alert me to that edit in a separate post. Every list must have one, and only one, player from Monday Night Football included to be counted. The name for the mandatory MNF number has changed from season to season - this season the MNF number will be called... The Barbecue Enthusiast Number or BBQ for short He'd be happier if it was rib sauce Make sure you use BBQ instead of LSG in your entries. Lists without a BBQ Number will be disqualified from scoring for the week, and players that include multiple players from the MNF game will only have the one designated as the BBQ Number counted for their score. But, a BBQ Number is the only requirement for a valid score, so if you somehow miss getting an entry in by the end of Sunday, you can always pick the player you think will get the most yards on Monday Night and at least get on the scoring table for the week. Additionally, your entry can include one or more tokens that have various effects, mostly to protect you from busting! Tokens mostly apply to your BBQ number player, and you start with a limited number at the beginning of the season. Use them wisely! See further down this post for more information on token types, rules, and effects. How does scoring work? The highest score of the week without busting is awarded first place for the week. The player with the largest bust (> 1000 yards) - or if nobody busted, then the player with the lowest score - is put in last place. The remaining places are awarded to non-busting players in descending order of score, followed by all busting players in ascending order of score. Unlike previous seasons, the points awarded for each particulare place each week will be the same across all weeks i.e. not dependent on the number of players that week. The points per place are as follows:
So in a hypothetical week with 5 players A-E scoring 800/995/1005/1050/1200 yards respectively, the following places and points would be awarded: Player B: 995 yards (1st, 70 points) Player A: 800 yards (2nd: 61 points) Player C: 1005 yards (3rd: 53 points) Player D: 1050 yards (4th: 46 points) Player E: 1200 yards (5th: 40 points) So as you can see, the easiest way to succeed in 1KYOB is to A) enter every week (even busting is better than earning no points at all), and B) not bust. Coming short by 200 yards will get you more points than busting by even a single yard. Points are cumulative across the entire 17 week season, so keep playing even if you get off to a bad start! One or two bad weeks won't kill you in the long run. In addition to the points awarded for each place it is possible to earn bonus points - either via hitting a perfect score of 1000, using the Substantial Minerals token, or by hitting specific targets during special theme weeks. More on these below. So what happens if someone hits 1000? Hitting 1000 exactly is extremely rare. Dozens of users submit lists to 1KYOB every week (with many many others doing so infrequently), and perfect scores still happen only once or twice a year, if at all. Therefore, a perfect score entitles you to a bonus of 200 points for that week. And, if you've managed to get a perfect score without getting any busts during the season up to that point, this bonus increases to 300 points. Your stock of tokens will be refreshed as well. So in short, it's really really good to hit 1000 and not constantly play conservatively out of fear of busting because it gives you a huge leg up in the season standings. Hitting exactly 1000 sounds very unlikely! What happens if I just get really close? It is true that perfect 1000s are extremely rare, so to liven things up a bit, if you score between 996 - 1000 inclusive then your stock of tokens will be refreshed. Note that the other effects described above will still only apply to perfect scores of 1000. THEME WEEKS There are currently three theme weeks planned for this season:
There'll be more info on these themes in the coming weeks. Tokens! Because 1KYOB is inherently a game about selecting offensive players, tokens were originally created to celebrate the superlative defenders of the NFL as well as introduce another strategic element to the game. Most tokens apply to your BBQ Number player (others have special effects) but you can't cheat and edit them in if you're heading into Monday about to bust: if you haven't declared you're using a token before the first player on your list starts, you're SOL. Each token can only be used once per season unless otherwise noted. To play a token please either copy and paste the token image or state the name of the token after your BBQ Number. This year there are five tokens, split into three different categories - Normal, Supplemental, and Special. Each player starts with one of each token. It is not possible to have more than one of any token. You can only use a max of one Normal token per week. You can use as many different Supplemental or Special tokens per week as you wish, provided that you still have them available to use! All tokens are refreshed for the following week if you score between 996 - 1000 for any particular week, and some tokens have special refresh rules in addition to this general rule. All unused tokens expire at the end of the regular season - use them or lose them! For the playoffs, players that finished at or near the top of the regular season table will be awarded one or more Normal tokens depending on their position to give them a competitive edge during those weeks. So it's worth doing well in the regular season to set yourself up nicely for a deep playoff run! NORMAL TOKENS THE ONLY DONALD TOKEN All other Donalds better step aside BBCode: code:
You may play the Donald Token when your BBQ Number has Rushing Yards specified as the yardage type. If your BBQ Number would bust your score, this token will zero out their score! Can only be used once per season unless refreshed or in certain circumstances, see later. THE PROFESSOR TOKEN All wheels, no chair BBCode: code:
You may play the Professor Token when your BBQ Number has Receiving Yards specified as the yardage type. If your BBQ Number would bust your score, this token will zero out their score! Can only be used once per season unless refreshed or in certain circumstances, see later. THE BROTHER'S SHADOW TOKEN Shown here temporarily taking corporeal form after absorbing the essence of another QB BBCode: code:
You may play the Brother's Shadow Token when your BBQ Number has Passing Yards specified as the yardage type. If your BBQ Number would bust your score, this token will convert your QB entry to use Rushing instead of Passing yards, as the QB can think of nothing but trying to escape his cursed shadow. If you are already using Rushing yards for your QB entry, this token will zero out their score as the QB remains rooted to the spot in fear. Can only be used once per season unless refreshed or in certain circumstances, see later. SUPPLEMENTAL TOKENS THE MERCURIAL GENIUS TOKEN Remember the good times, not the bad BBCode: code:
Marcus Peters is an extremely talented CB who is prone to, uh, 'shifts' in mood that can affect his performance. One week he will smother a #1 wideout so thoroughly that the receiver forgets his own name, the next he's launching flags into the crowd and himself out of the stadium. You may play the Mercurial Genius token alongside any of the above Normal tokens - it cannot be played by itself. The Normal token acts normally, and if you need it to avoid busting (or if you bust regardless), it will be consumed. However if you do not need the token to avoid busting, the Mercurial Genius token will return the Normal token back to you to be used again in a following week (i.e. it will refresh the token). The Mercurial Genius token itself can be played any number of times during the season, unless... ...your BBQ Number blows up and exceeds the relevant yardage limit (Rushing: 100, Receiving: 100, Passing: 400). Then the Genius will get himself ejected for the rest of the season and your BBQ Number will have a record game! Specifically, their yardage total will be set to the relevant all-time single-game record below: Rushing: 296 yards (Adrian Peterson, Vikings vs San Diego, 2007) Receiving: 336 yards (Willie 'Flipper' Anderson, Rams vs Saints, 1989) Passing: 554 yards (Norm van Brocklin, Rams vs NY Yanks, 1951) If this happens and you still don't bust (what kind of strange list are you running?!?) then the Normal token will still be returned. The Mercurial Genius token is always consumed after the Genius is ejected. SPECIAL TOKENS THE SUBSTANTIAL MINERALS TOKEN Ignore the fact that the receiver dropped this pass, which hit him SQUARE IN THE NUMBERS jesus christ you clowns let BRADY HAVE ANOTHER LOMBARDI BBCode: code:
If you declare the Minerals token during a given week, it gets you 35 bonus points for a high score and 70 bonus points for the best score of the week, but if you finish outside the pointy end of the field you get zero, so you better choose your players wisely! In addition, you can use the Minerals token as much as you want if you keep getting the bonus, but if you use the Minerals token and fail to reach a high score, you can't use it again for the entire rest of the season unless your tokens are refreshed by scoring between 996 - 1000 in any week. Not for the faint at heart! A 'high score' in the Minerals context means a score that is either within the top 10 if 20 or more players are active in the week, or within the top half of the field (rounded down) if less than 20 players are active. For example, if only 10 players are active then to hit on a Minerals token then you have to score in the top 5; if 7 players are active, then it must be top 3. TOKEN CLARIFICATIONS I'll try to collate any token clarifications I make during each thread in this area. Clarification 1: The Genius Token The Genius token will return the Normal token if you don't need the Normal token to avoid busting. If you do need it (or bust anyway) the Normal token is consumed and not returned. The Genius token itself is always returned unless it gets ejected ie your BBQ number exceeds the yardage limit. For example: Pre-Monday yardage total: 920 If Brate goes for 70: no bust, both Hayward and Genius tokens returned If Brate goes for 100: Hayward token activated, Brate yardage becomes zero, Hayward token not returned, Genius token returned If Brate goes for 120: Genius ejected, Brate yardage becomes 336, total yardage 1256, bust, Hayward token not returned, Genius token not returned Pre-Monday yardage total: 600 Brate goes for 70: no bust or ejection, both tokens returned Brate goes for 120: Genius ejected, Brate yardage becomes 336, total yardage 936, no bust, Hayward token returned, Genius token not returned Clarification 2: Tiebreakers Ties are broken as follows:
Clarification 3: Using the same player more than once You can use the same player more than once but you cannot use the same combination of player and yardage type more than once. So - to use Nick Foles as an example - you can list Nick Foles three times in one entry (for Passing, Rushing and Receiving yards) but you cannot list Nick Foles - Passing more than once. If you use a player more than once they have to be listed on separate lines for each yardage type you want to use: pre:PHI - Nick Foles - Passing Yards PHI - Nick Foles - Rushing Yards If you play the Minerals token but fail to place in the top half of the field that week, your base points for that week will be set to zero. These are the points that you get based on your position for the week. For example, if there are 10 players in the week, and you finish 5th, your base points are 40 and you get 35 bonus points from the Minerals token. If you finish 6th, your base points are zero and you don't get any bonus points from the Minerals token (you also lose the ability to play the token in future weeks unless you manage to refresh your tokens, see the second post in the thread for more info). Note that it is still possible to earn bonus points from other sources in that week however - e.g. if you play your Minerals token during the Turkeys theme week, and you finish outside the top half but hit on 4 turkeys, your score for the week is zero (base) + 40 (4 turkeys x 10pts each) = 40 points. MNF! Pre-MNF subtotals and remaining yards below. I would say that Okibi and Aggro are most likely to bust this week, followed by Josh Allen stans Beefed Owl and Acebuckeye13. For this week your MNF score will be zero as I didn't post the weekly schedule to clarify which teams were playing. Leperflesh posted:GBP - Jordan Love passing yards While Jimmy G is indeed handsome, it is not possible to quantify exactly how handsome he is in yards, so he'll net you zero yards this week. barnold posted:forgot to put a team in so i'm going BBQ only Andy Reid would be proud Bjork Bjowlob fucked around with this message at 00:40 on Sep 12, 2023 |

WEEK 2 Congratulations to Aggro for the best score of Week 1 with 978 yards, followed by Okibi in second with 935 yards and then Beefed Owl in third with 863 yards. Aaron Rodgers going out with an injury without scoring a single yard certainly scuppered Hizawk's and my entries! Congratulations also to the entire field for not busting at all in Week 1, really sets the tone for the season. Note that this week there are two MNF games. Your BBQ number player must come from the later of the two games, i.e. CLE @ PIT. You are free to use as many players as you like from the earlier game, i.e. NO @ CAR.
