for consoles, early cd era & early console internet era for sure, so basically the entirety of the 90s I always found it cool that there was so much more non-game content released for consoles at this time, tho the majority of it never left japan. anything from like, games being bundled with omake disks, radio dramas and art CDs, aquarium style visualizers, to like, these fully packed intranet experiences which were loaded with interesting data and multimedia that can really help capture what certain eras and scenes were like the cd era had the most magic for me before everything was ironed out tech wise & there was still a bunch of experimentation going on. studios were willing to release rly weird stuff & this sort of ended at the ps2 era, after which that space was more filled with the indie dev scene as targeting consoles became less prohibitive

the immediate jump from "you got a couple MBs of storage" to "you get 700MBs (but i hope you like having to deal with seek times)" was huge, yeah. i'm trying to think of other instances of performance jumps on the same order of magnitude and there aren't many. the switch from 56K to broadband would probably be comparable. usb replacing parallel/serial ports could be one too, though frankly they should've made the usb connectors have screws like parallel/serial. no cables accidentally getting unplugged that way, and it feels cooler imo

the best era was firing up TeleMate to dial into local Citadel boards and play TW2002 and Land of Devastation. we had a bbs that was a big loose-rule rpg and it loving ruled. i remember going to a swim meet and running into someone I knew from that board and it was so awkward
