Yeah I had forgotten this setup but man it is still really effective. Also interesting that our little group has congealed together over the last few weeks and are definitely more in synch than they were during the previous books.

Soonmot posted:"Not liking that," Christopher muttered. "Not liking that at all." It's funny, what lines stay with you. So in the other kid's books, they mostly get thrown straight into the poo poo; Jalil the rationalist gets a lot of time to really ruminate on the evidence and try to predict whatever's about to happen to them.

Christopher's growing fixation on leprechauns is reminding me of a particular scene in The Cabin in the Woods (I'm sure they're not actually going to go there but I'll bet they do eventually encounter leprechauns and they're hosed up and Christopher hates them)quote:The red-faced man gaped, then exploded in laughter. "Yes, it does indeed lead somewhere. Or anywhere. Or everywhere, so they say. A man who travels that road and lives may climb back up to any place in Everworld, or in the Old World itself." A persistent rumour among convicts in the fledgling penal colony of Sydney in the 18th century was that if you could make it over the Blue Mountains, it was only a few days' walk to China. Just saying.

I want to say it's another historical figure like cleopatra or Elizabeth bathory. But something is giving me Irish vibes, so it might be the Morrigan? I'm excited to find out.

Yeah, Senna has clearly been grooming all of them for this. And much like with David, Everworld already has some really seductive hooks in Jalil.

"Hide yourselves, if you can," the Fiannan said. He shot a look at April. "And for all love, keep the girl from her. She's a beauty, and hell will brook no competition." ... "I didn't think pagans believed in hell," April said.

Hel's overwhelming divinity and duality is really fun here. She's the size of a building and literally just scrapes through the streets like a zombie on one side, leaving rotting chunks of flesh, while on the other she's basically a supermodel. Also totally forgot the town was explicitly a place Hel built to get her sex slaves. There's been a lot of discussions about sex in general across these books after it was almost completely avoided and ignored in Animorphs (except when Ax got horny that time).

So like a lot of you I know I read some of Everworld as a teen and can remember some of what happens in them. I thought I had forgotten this one but I’ll tell you right the gently caress now, as soon as the cobblestones made of human heads was mentioned it all came rushing back. That imagery has been stuck in my brain for decades, I just forgot it was from these books. Holy poo poo.

Yeah back in book 1 we learned Loki had given Mjolnir to the Viking suicide squad to fight the Aztecs and they made mention of how Ka Anor had eaten Thor and spit out the hammer. And now we're learning its at least partially a ruse for Loki's own interest, likely even an attempt to save Baldur and Thor's lives since they presumably were whipping the other gods up to fight Ka Anor.

God, his life just sucks right now. Chris is a lot less infuriating when viewed from the outside.

So what would KJApples do if not constrained by the school library conventions on not traumatising the pre teens? Dear god it's basically a series of tortureocracies straight from the pages of Iain M Banks Next up Jalil builds a chair

For all that Jalil is still calling it false bravado, he is the one who's started figuring out the rules of Everworld the best. Not perfectly by any means, but I don't think Christopher or April would have managed to piece together as much as he did from his short journey with Senna. Wonder if she regrets dragging him into this. Also the Coo-Hatch getting up to 'what is the correct shape and composition of a bullet' is uh concerning.

so this Ka-Anor... you know what, "doesn't concern himself with mortals" is probably a big step up compared to the gods we've met so far, and who would really complain if Big H, Loki or Hel got ett?

Jalil’s point of view is everything I was hoping it would be. And now that we’re a few books in, I feel like going back to David for the next book and getting his internal monologue and seeing how senna is messing with it will also be neat.

I do love this part because it shows that while Jalil and April absolutely have Senna's number in some ways she still holds so many cards that they won't stop to drink when they're thirsty if she slips the right barb in. Its all so delightfully petty and dangerous all swirled together.
