What's behind the bottom panel with the "grip" ridges? It's old and cheap enough that I would assume it doesn't have USB.

Oh no. I just realized that the websites that were brand new when I was in high school are a quarter of a century old now. Weeblstuff is 23 years old and Joe Cartoon.com is over 25 years year old.

In the 90's, I had a hand-written note with the exact URL of the "Hamster in a Microwave" Joe Cartoon thing and the address for the alt.tv.simpsons discussion board, so I could show people the hottest content on the net.

I also had an address for the best webrings to find funny videos and poorly done fake WWE photos of Yokozuna.

What is the deal with Zoomers and young Gen Z women being obsessed with being a "tradwife"?

Why is this an internet phenomenon?

Why is "tradwife" a thing? Is it not just a housewife?

Why are a chunk of Gen Z all for this concept?

I can undertsand the appeal of it for incel men, but why is it a thing among women?

I keep hearing and seeing the term everywhere and it seems like a weird hyped-up lifestyle movement around being a housewife.

NBC news was reporting on some lady who is a big influencer and "tradwife" figure.

Matt Walsh also recently highlighted some single lady with 8k followers on Tiktok who said she didn't want kids and just wanted to get drunk and watch celebrities. A bunch of "tradwife" women and weird incel conservative men (aka most of Matt Walsh's audience) swarmed her over it.

enterprising young right-wing women have realized it's a culture war wedge they can use to get engagement and thus money. i've not followed it too closely, but my feeling is that they bootstrapped it into existence the same way most of the other shiboleths were, find a minor difference no one cares about (conservative folks tend to have a firearm for hunting) and turn it into a major identifier for profit and maybe some political turnout (conservative folks now have multiple ar-15s so they can take pictures of their toddlers holding them)

the irony of the tradwife movement is that all of them are filming and posting so much everyday it's easily a fulltime job outside their wifely duties

"tradwife" stuff is all about restoring traditional gender norms, dedicated to returning back to the era of totally subservient 1950s housewives with no independence of their own. obviously it's heavily linked to conservatism

you're hearing a lot about it because of the rising tide of angry young men who are completely obsessed with online content that validates their beliefs and have plenty of disposable income to spend

the general ideology of wanting to roll back all this newfangled feminism and going back to the 1950s is hardly new, of course, with poo poo like the Quiverfull movement that never quite went away (especially in the rural, religious fringes). and there's been plenty of women with highly conservative upbringings willing to embrace that lifestyle, along with the occasional person who's just so absolutely loving sick of the demands of the modern working world that they fall into regressivism out of a desperate need for some kind of purpose in life

but the tradwife movement is all about social media, a response to the rise of extremely online misogynistic men who desperately want someone to cater to their ideological desires. it's basically softcore porn for far-right types. all those videos of lily-white women pouring milk and kneading bread dough while they talk about how much they love being absolutely subservient to their rich husbands and tending to their family's vast properties? the gamergaters and white nationalists loving love that poo poo, they'll gladly empty their wallets for that it, and a substantial portion of them probably aren't wearing pants while they watch. it's the dream girlfriends they'll never find unless they live in some remote rural town dominated by an arch-conservative church

as formal labour becomes especially alienating, the idea of getting to do less-alienated household work and making do on one income seems appealing to a fair amount of people. it's a twisted kind of anti-consumerism, marketed and sold as an advertising product. basically it's reactionary counterculture.

Any idea how many people are actually doing this, and how much money they're making? I was being a little flippant in my reply to Trotsky, since I have seen women online who are like this. But not often, and often I wondered whether the woman in question was real. There seem to be way, way, way more Anime Nazis in search of their Wheat Field Girlfriend than there are attractive young women who want to do that.

Without watching any of these people's channels I'm guessing that they don't actually have a full-time job as a homemaker. They don't actually want to work their fingers to the bone...and like, if Trad Boys really wanted a Trad Life they could go off and live among the Quiverfull freaks. They're not going to do that because those people are ugly and stupid and boring and their lifestyle is even more mind-numbingly boring. The Trad Dream is Jim Bob Duggar, who is a multimillionaire who appears to live an incredibly boring life eating tater tot casserole every day.

i really don't know much about it, i'm not even on tik tok in the first place. my comment was inspired by this bit from a business insider article i read sometime back

quote:

Making viral content and getting social media views is a legitimate career path for many, which begs the question: does TikTok count as "working outside the home?" This complicates "anti-work" trad wife content, since creating content is a kind of work and can be lucrative.

"Social media influencing is a career trajectory," Janning said. "It could be that they're not selling a product but selling a version of themselves, and their husband will be getting the sponsorship. It's a contradiction: their job is to tell people they don't have a job."

i would agree that most prominent tradwife's are doing it as content creators first and as a lifestyle as a distant second. i have no idea how many women actually buy into and attempt to live this way, but my assumption is they're few and far between

it's my impression that there are a wide gamut of idealized lifestyle social media folks, and i guess the question is how well to any of their audience actually correspond to a following of real people attempting to live that lifestyle. is there a significant number of people actually trying to engage in the "up at 3am grindset", or the all of the different hours long daily wellness routines?

i've read about two tradwife influencers

One was a bisexual vegan in Toronto who made ASMR videos. Someone leaked her nude photos online, so she opened an Onlyfans account, only to become spectacularly popular and start making $60k a month from it. She paid off all her debts and bought a car in the first month, and left the city after buying a house in the suburbs.Soon after, she started falling into spiritualism and wellness stuff, and then she started getting into Christian influencers, and then she slid into the alt-right and started ranting about the liberal tyranny of masking policies. And then she reinvented herself as Gwen The Milk Maid, a Tiktok tradwife who prays every morning, dreams of one day moving to a farm, and hates the tyrannical leftist government. given her history, and the fact that she hasn't closed her Onlyfans yet despite her increasing vitriol against the impurities of sex workers, speculation is fairly widespread that she's faking it

The other one (Hannah Neeleman) is a Mormon who married a wealthy heir (one of the ten children of a multinational airline mogul) who was equally Mormon. They lived in Brazil for a few years while the husband worked cushy jobs for daddy's companies. When they got tired of that, they moved to Utah, bought a massive ranch, had seven kids, and opened an instagram to show off their back-to-the-land traditional lifestyle with stuff like how their $20k traditional always-on gas stove has freed them from the tyranny of microwaves. The tradwife stuff appears to also double as advertisement for their ranch, which sells direct to consumers and will mail you packages of ground beef for just 11 bucks a pound plus shipping and handling. The pair avoid politics, though they're still beloved by the right (including the alt-right).

in both cases, they probably don't really need the money, but enjoy the attention and the aesthetic. similar to how George W Bush bought a ranch and wore a cowboy hat all the time in hopes that people would think he was a down-to-earth country boy

it lasted for years because it worked like "free" cell phones. you were locked into a contract with an overpriced ISP subscription. so you are getting a discount but from the already discounted price of ~$500 buying the tower in the first place, not the full price of buying a comparable computer at ~$1000. they cleaned up on people staying subscribed to the overpriced ISP rather than cancelling. it was a huge cash cow while it lasted, for years.

As of 2021, there were still 1.6 million AOL subscribers who already had high-speed internet from a different provider that were paying $14.99 per month and bringing in over $21 million for Time Warner per month.

The assumption is that most of them have just been on AOL forever and didn't know they could unsubscribe and still use the internet/forgot about it/want to keep their AOL email address.

Getting people hooked early on that stuff can be very profitable, even when it is almost completely useless.
