Eric the Mauve posted:There's a medical certification process for it that is no doubt convoluted and contentious, but the CBA prescribes that if a player retires due to unrehabilitatable injury the team still has to pay out the contract in full. If the Nats are trying to renege on paying then this is going to arbitration of some kind. e: Realistically if there's zero realistic hope of Strasburg being an effective major league pitcher again, the Nats should be happy to see him retire. Otherwise they'll just be running a 39 man roster for the next several years, which is doubleplusungood for them. So most likely the team and Boras/Strasburg made some kind of verbal agreement as to the timing of the payouts, and the team is now altering the deal. Pray they don't alter it any further. e2: gently caress I selfsniped, quote is not edit ![]()

Over the last three years, Anthony Rendon has been paid $71M. Over the next three years, Ronald Acuña Jr. will be paid about half that much. It's not fair. It's just not loving fair

Well no, obviously it doesn't exist until it's on paper and signed. Probably whatever agreement was made was due to be signed the day before the presser and then the Nats changed their mind. IIRC the salary was already heavily deferred so who knows how each side wants to change the timing of the payments exactly.

So there's no way in hell Schneider can keep this going for the rest of the year. Buuuuut if he did, should he win Rookie of the year? That would be what, 3.5 WAR or so?

With Josh Jung's injury earlier in the year, ROTY is Henderson's to lose at this point, and he's not exactly a slouch on either side of the ball. Hell, literally last night he hit a single, double, and triple and had a couple huge defensive plays.

The Yankees are doing some lame Q&A with the 98' team instead of playing an old timers game. totally bitchmade. Also Jorge Posada wearing the yankee jersey with that stupid loving insurance patch is triggering me.

Alas, instead we got The Cans.

Luis Severino left the game last night in intense pain. He said afterwards he felt like he had been shot. It was a deeply depressing interview for a guy who seemed destroyed that his long Yankee career might have ended that way. I am very sad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpvLasRWoic

Easily one of my favorite players from this window. I really hope he can get healthy and go full Bellinger on a prove it contract with someone next year.

I dont check the standings very well I guess. The Twins are the only team in their division over .500, and it got me curious, has a team ever won their division with a losing record?

The closest (at least in the WC era, though there also hasn't been a worse record before it offhand) was the 2005 Padres, who crawled into the playoffs with an 82-80 record because the entire remaining NL West couldn't even manage 78 wins. They were annihilated, but the 2006 Cardinals on the other hand -- with an 83-78 record -- would win the World Series, firmly cementing Cardinals Devil Magic in the lexicon. There's also an alternate universe where Carlos Beltran went to Anaheim instead of back to Houston and convinced several Angels hitters to employ The Cans in 2017 to keep up with the Yankees and the rest of the Joneses. I see Rendon as the Correa-like eager adopter. Ohtani is the Altuve of the situation, refusing to use the scheme and being angry at his teammates if they try to bang for him.
