That just seems quaint in 2023. Plus, we've all long been thoroughly desensitized by the internet.

It was about as unerotic and you can possibly get, but somehow compelling. Compelling what exactly, I'm still not sure.

I don't think they have the rights. The family is holding on to them IIRC, they certainly weren't available to Bezos for all the money in the world.

They haven't been doing much good with DC, that's for sure. Just remake "48 Hours" or "Lethal Weapon" with Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart as space-cop buddies. I'd watch the hell out of that.

Funny thing, the extended play modes were a good part of why VHS won out over Beta, since when RCA was in negotiations with Sony to license the latter format, they were like "These cassettes are neat but they can only store one hour of footage. Could you slow down the tape speed so it could fit a full football game on it?"

To which Sony's answer was a resounding "no", not so much because they couldn't but because they didn't want to compromise video quality, not really understanding that storage capacity was more important for a home video format.

Meanwhile JVC was like "no problem mate" and boom, 8 hours of footage on a 160-minute tape.

I think I had Aliens/Terminator/Predator on one tape and I didn't give a drat about video quality.

Possibly just Aliens/Terminator.

Also pornography and I'm not even joking.Very few people realize how influential the idea of jacking off in the privacy of your own home was in 1980 and a lot of decisions were based around this consumer demand. poo poo, nowadays, we've completely eliminated the Walk of Shame to the Checkout Counter at the video store and just pump it directly into our veins online where our only concern is our history trail but back then porn in your home was definitely enticing and very much desired. Even if nobody openly advocated for the issue.

It's an old myth but it's not actually true. About the same share of porn was released on Beta as regular movies, not to mention that porn constituted something like ~0.5% of total home video sales. VHS just was a better format.

I may be speaking out my rear end on this, but I I feel like the same is probably happening now with AI image/video generation and VR stuff. Like ten to twenty years from now when either is more everyday and commonplace I’ll hear “turns out porno was the backbone of those fledgling industries.”

At release HD-DVD had smaller overall capacity and IIRC ran at 1080i instead of 1080p. I recall reading that it was easier and faster to author HD-DVDs since Java wasn’t involved though.

At the time, I was pretty skeptical of Blu-Ray due to Sony’s involvement, as they had racked up quite a few failed storage formats by that point.

For the true 80s porn experience, try the following method:

  • Rent porn. (Either the back room of the local video shop or local porn store)
  • Rent vcr from local video store. Yes, this was a thing.
  • Hook rental vcr to your own vcr.
  • Record your selections for future enjoyment.

Providing, of course, you didn't get something by a dastardly company that used copy protection and your copy ended up all squiggly.
