I haven't seen Altered carbon but I believe that some dude read the foundation series ten years ago and, over drinks, explained to someone else what it was was about. Then that second person decided to make the show using only what they heard as the material to be adapted. So, in the end, you have some familiar names and events happening so, very superficially, you can say it's an "adaptation" but since they are taking nothing from the books besides that it's more like a reimagination. And it's wild.
