There's never going to be a Half-Life 3, or a Portal 3. Expectations for those titles would be impossibly high, Valve is way better off doing something different. Plus they make far more money making some exploitative garbage than an actual good game anyway, and their flat structure incentivizes making money above everything else.

Ah yes, deeply successful exploitation games like Artifact.

And yes, if they were publicly traded they would be very similar. But that's not the only option. Jolly Gabe could run his drat company and give it some vision, but he set it up with flat management because he just wants to sit in his office slamming Big Macs all day.

They have also made a bunch of artists financially stable because of making poo poo for those loot boxes, which they super didn’t have to do. E: Or rather it is surprising that they did that because they are a huge company.

The loot boxes themselves are not great, no argument there.

The issue with Half-Life 3 is that it basically can't succeed. Even if you made an absolutely excellent HL3 it's not going to be genre-defining and any choice they make with regards to game stuff is going to be criticized.

Like poo poo "does Gordon Freeman talk" is a great example of a no-win situation because either way it's going to earn criticism.

I may be misremembering but isn't this their explicitly stated reason for never making a HL3? Both HL1 and HL2 were massive innovations in the genre that gaben only directed the company to make because they innovated the genre/tech so much and I'm pretty sure I've read an interview saying they'll never make a HL3 unless they can do the same thing with it.

People say this sort of thing a lot, but I think it's a mistake to equate "Will have at least some critics no matter what" with "Cannot succeed". There have been plenty of other revivals of dormant series that were successful by every metric, like Doom 2016 or Metroid Dread, and I don't think there's any reason to believe it would be impossible to make a Half Life 3 that's a financial and critical success, even if it's not the industry changer 2 was.

Ngl, I don't think I even really care about seeing a new Half-Life game anymore. Maybe I'd be mildly more interested if I could actually play Alyx, but only by so much.

Doesn't help that Laidlaw's leaked take on Episode 3 was really underwhelming. Obviously thanks to Alyx that wouldn't be a thing anymore, but it just replaces one dubious unknown direction for another.

I would say the harder part there is figuring out how to do a 2016/Dread style of Half-Life 2. Both of those games worked extremely hard to capture the feel of the original games while also modernizing things because Doom and Metroid have such incredibly defined identities that you can focus on Rip or Tear or whatever.

Half-Life and Half-Life 2 run into the problem that what they did particularly well (a more story/narrative focused game, heavy focus on environmental storytelling, more involved AI, physics engine stuff) is all relatively commonplace now. Without that most of Half-Life's identity is baked into the narrative and uh, I don't think it's controversial to say nobody has any real idea what is up with HL's actual narrative at Valve.

the other angle with valve and lootboxes regardless of whether they were first or popularised them is that they're still heavily invested in the concept, there's generally been a trend away from lootboxes (fortnite, COD, PUBG, OW have dropped them) but valve hasn't budged an inch beyond what they've been required to do by regulators in a few countries

they don't want to give up that sweet sweet gambling addict money

Maybe pioneered was too strong of a word, but I think RPATDO_LAMD is fair to say they certainly helped popularize/normalize it in the west. They were certainly one of the more early adopters, and their games are some of the most popular in the industry.
