They are the only people authorised to say if a big mastiff is legally a big mastiff, based on how much it looks like another dog used to catch slaves in South America, that wasn't extant in the UK at the time of legislation. Of course because it was the Victorians knowing that they were the finest scientific brains in the world while having no clue what they were doing they managed to introduce a ton of horrific genetics that probably leave some classic breeds as evolutionary dead ends, but overall the obsession with civilization, discipline, and paperwork did seem to reduce animal cruelty and dog attacks, and it's only when we decided that there's no such thing as society and chucked all that out in the 80s to replace it with tabloid sensationalism and "lol just get one off gumtree they train themselves" that it goes back up again. Maybe we should try some of that again without obsessing over dog phrenology to the point a bunch can't breathe properly.

If the prospect of interacting with a dog is a problem for you, then maybe just don't go to places where you're likely to encounter them. Like, if you're gonna have a big freakout because a dog might run over and give your a sniff, then perhaps parks aren't for you

Well that poster in particular wants dogs leashed at all times which is a bit more extreme than "don't let your dog go up to strangers unless they seem receptive " Mourning Due posted:Are you saying that sensory sensitivity isn't real? Or that sudden unexpected loud noise and unwanted physical contact cannot trigger it? Your wording was that dog owners think "gently caress neurodivergent people" which was the issue. If you said people not thinking about these issues is thoughtless (which I think is what you meant) I don't think people would have had the same reaction.

Mourning Due posted:Dogchat: This is an interesting comparison. I think it's a bit apt, with one sticking point. It makes sense why dog owners would have an attachment to their dogs. Dogs are living creatures, we can bond with them. We see they have personalities and forgive or ignore any flaws/mistakes on their part out of love. That's perfectly human. But what does it say about gun owners that they have a similar level of attachment to a tool designed to kill people?

Also while the stats are debatable there's good positive associations with dog ownership in older people and cardio fitness and mental health, whereas people who hide in their basement bunker stockpiling ammunition don't seem to be big on walking or happy about anything.

Lord Ludikrous posted:From earlier in this thread. Congrats, you are also a oval office. I didn’t say a dog should be able to do whatever the gently caress it wants and jump up on people, did I? I said go over and give them a bit of a sniff. If a massive fear of dogs to the point you can’t tolerate one calmly approaching you was a common thing, then sure. But there are very few people who suffer with that, and I don’t think every dog in the country should no longer be allowed to run about enjoying themselves in a park with other dogs and people who enjoy their company because of that extreme minority. Like, I know a couple of people who are poo poo scared of cats but I notice none of the ‘leash all dogs at all times’ people have said a thing about the people who let their cats out and about. For the record I agree with microchipping and licenses and your dog having good recall and such, but no dog or owner or indeed situation is perfect and if it’s genuinely going to gently caress up your day if a dog comes and sniffs you in a park, I’d suggest the parks known for being dog walking spots (oi oi) might not be a great place to hang out, in the same way I don’t spend a great deal of time in central London at night because cops scare the poo poo out of me. And people can gently caress off making this into an ableist thing - plenty of ND people love dogs and plenty of NT people really don’t. A fear of dogs isn’t a mental illness.

Mourning Due posted:Are you saying that sensory sensitivity isn't real? Or that sudden unexpected loud noise and unwanted physical contact cannot trigger it? Were you raised in either of those countries? Do you have sensory sensitivity, or are you arguing on behalf of an imaginary person who does? Because I do have sensory sensitivities, so you're going to have to find some people filled with less straw. Dogs which are safe and do not attack people are a normal part of society. I will absolutely concede that dogs who are not safe should be muzzled and on leash. But does that mean Jakabite's good boy should have to be muzzled and leashed? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say no. If someone is triggered (and I mean that in the legitimate psychological sense of entering fight-or-flight mode because of previous legit trauma) by a dog coming up to them, that person needs help in the same way they'd need help if they were triggered by cars, or shouting, or open spaces. Those are all normal things most people in society will be able to deal with. It would be bezerk to expect all owners of dogs to muzzle and leash their pets in case someone has ptsd from an attack, in the same way society would break down if we had to remove all cars from the roads because some people have been in crashes (arguably way, way more than have been attacked by dogs). This whole conversation is deranged, there's some powerful conflation of basic concepts being thrown around. My dog going up to someone and giving them a sniff is not the same as a cane corso leaping at you snarling. If someone has been attacked by a dog and has trauma, then I am genuinely sorry about that, and if anyone cannot tell if a dog coming toward them is friendly or not, I also feel sorry for them. But you cannot seriously be expecting every dog, even ones with no history of violence to be restricted just in case they happen to come across a tiny minority who wrongly thinks they might be dangerous?

A bit touchy aren’t you? Just admit it, as long as your pet is happy you don’t give a poo poo about anyone else. The point is I as a stranger don’t know if your pet is calmly approaching me to investigate or if it’s going to try and jump on me or take a bite out of me or whatever. So maybe for the safety of others and your own dog unless you’re in an actual dog park or something just keep it leashed?

That's the fundamental question here. There's a tension between comfort for humans, and comfort for animals, which in many ways occupy a child-like place in social perception, and such have many humans defending them. Whose comfort is more important in outdoor spaces, yours or the dogs?
