I've got a bone to pick.

My girlfriend and one of her friends were telling me about Yellow Deli a few years back, and how it's a misogynist cult that runs it, but they also said the sandwiches they make are extremely good. They found the location in Chattanooga when visiting the city on a school field trip in 7th grade, and they went to Yellow Deli as a class for lunch while they were there :cripes:

Cult Podcast did a very good deep dive on them. I think people who enjoy this podcast would also enjoy Cult Podcast. They do deep dives on rather obscure groups, and even individual people who become cults onto themselves like Kanye West.

In an era of decreasing ad revenues, I think iHeart's strategy is to make their ads so obnoxious, people spring for the premium subscriptions.

Which, hey, worked on me.

Everett False
Sep 28, 2006

Mopsy, I'm starting to question your medical credentials.

I've unsubscribed to most iHeart podcasts because the ads are so loving bad I can't stand it anymore. You'd think they'd have an iHeart premium option that would let you listen to all their shows ad-free, but afaik the only ad-free option they have is for music. BtB is fine because they have their own premium option, but for a lot of them you're SOL. Unless it's one of the few that's uploaded to youtube, where they use the youtube ads. So if you have ad-free youtube, you have ad-free podcasts. Except they're videos. Pretty annoying workaround.

Anyway Behind the Bastards, Stuff You Should Know, and Stuff You Missed in History Class were the ones I could find if anyone was curious. Also 99% Invisible, which isn't iHeart but whatever. Playlists instead of their channels because they upload the back catalogue too and it fucks the order all up, youtube technically generates rss feeds but they don't work in most podcatchers as far as I can tell.

I didn't know much about Wim Hof aside from the types of stuff he spouted in his innumerable podcast appearances during his peak.

I'm not surprised that he's a grifter; what does surprise me, and perhaps it shouldn't, is that so many supposedly good news outlets just credulously repeat his bullshit in their articles about him. Like, gently caress, I know journalism is in rough shape these days, but it shouldn't be too much to ask them to check how many Guinness World Records he really has or whatever.

Wim Hof falls into a particular weak spot in modern journalism. He was made to provide filler for the AP news wire, and is utterly remarkable at any other time.

Ramrod XTreme
He also falls into a weak spot in modern media: podcasts are huge, and interview-type podcasts always need guests. Once someone like Wim manages to become "the person people who does that thing," then as long as they are interesting/entertaining enough, lots and lots of people want to have them on their show. And this is a space where fact-checking is often pretty lacking.
