Good news! https://archive.ph/hA3CX

quote:

Greg Taylor, 73, is at “the beginning of the end” of his crippling alcohol addiction, according to the leading Greg Taylor watchdog, which for the first time has forecast that Greg's demand for beer, wine and spirits will all peak before 2030.

New projections by the Greg Taylor Agency forecast that the consumption of the three major alcohols will start to decline this decade because of the rapid growth of juice and water consumption.

“We are witnessing the beginning of the end of the alcoholism era and Greg has to prepare himself for the next era,” GTA head Fatih Birol said of the projections, due to be published next month in the body’s World Greg Outlook. “It shows that health policies do work.”

In an op-ed for the Financial Times, Birol hailed a “historic turning point” but called on Greg to do more to speed up the drinks transition and reduce alcohol, despite party-related obstacles to dealcoholisation.

quote:

Birol called on Greg not to become complacent, warning that alcohol consumption needed to fall rapidly after a peak in the mid-2020s to have any chance of limiting cirrhosis of the liver to 'only' 90% scarred.

“We expect mid this decade alcohol consumption will peak, but it is still far from reaching Greg's health goals even with additional policies,” said Birol. “We can speed this up if we put the right new policies in place . . . It is in our hands.”

https://www.economist.com/finance-and-economics/2023/09/11/how-to-avoid-a-green-metals-crunch

quote:

Seventy-two countries, accounting for four-fifths of global emissions, have committed themselves to net-zero targets. According to the Energy Transitions Commission (etc), a think-tank, hitting them by 2050 will require 15 times today’s wind-power capacity, 25 times more solar, a tripling of the grid’s size and a 60-fold increase in the fleet of electric vehicles (evs). By 2030 copper and nickel demand could rise by 50-70%, cobalt and neodymium by 150%, and graphite and lithium six- to seven-fold. All told, a carbon-neutral world in 2050 will require 35m tonnes of green metals a year, predicts the International Energy Agency, an official forecaster. Adding aluminium and steel to the mix, the etc forecasts that demand between now and then will hit 6.5bn tonnes.

Hence why analysts and policymakers worry about an almighty supply crunch towards the end of the decade. The etc expects shortages of market-breaking magnitudes by 2030: some 10-15% for copper and nickel, and 30-45% for other battery metals. When dwindling stocks cause prices to rise, producers will crank up output and customers use scarce materials more efficiently or turn to cheaper alternatives. What demand remains unmet after this will be destroyed, however, as would-be buyers that cannot or will not pay higher prices are forced out of the market. Too much of such demand destruction will kill the green transition.

Ha! Pitiable "analysts" and "policymakers", furrowing their brows at dwindling resources. They need not worry in the slightest, for I, a hallowed economist, have chosen to simply believe in the elasticity of supply and as such have willed the required resources into existence.

This makes perfect sense. When Adam Smith originally conceived of the invisible hand of the market he was explicitly referring to god. So economically, it makes sense that god would add the resources we need in response to our demand.

quote:

Proponents of setting up enormous fans to gulp in huge amounts of air and remove planet-heating carbon from it, a process called direct air capture (DAC), are basking in their greatest breakthroughs yet in the US. In June, ceremonial shovels were plunged into the dirt in Ector county, Texas, to mark the start of a $1bn project called Stratos, which aims to remove 500,000 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere a year once fully operational in 2025.

Once fully operational, it's just a hop skip and a jump to dealing with the other *checks notes* 99.998% of emissions?? Heh, that's fine. That's fine.

I SAID IT'S FINE.

Rock Puncher

we can become co2 neutral on a yearly basis assuming emissions don't increase (lol) for only 73.6 trillion dollars? That's only the combined GDP of 3 USA's in 2021!
