At this point I’d rather authors just lean into it and make it overtly a fetish thing. I still won’t read it, but I can respect that more than any amount of “okay so she’s technically a slave but it’s fine because actually” prevaricating. Just be honest that you want a catgirl or whatever who has to obey you and quit lying to yourself

It kills me that all of the adaptations of Tsutomu Nihei's stuff is done in that Netflix CGI style. People argue that it fits, I disagree.

I saw that they're making a new Madoka Magicka movie but I feel like the enthusiasm for that series dropped off hard after the first real movie and that one sequel (?) anime they put out. Honestly, I rewatched the original like last year and it doesn't hold up very well. Part of it is that it was way more exciting when it was airing episode by episode and nobody knew what would happen next, but it has so many scenes where the characters do nothing but say exposition about the same stuff we already know about; "Madoka would you make a wish if it would be hosed up and bad?" "I dunno, I guess we'll do this routine for 10 more episodes."

Ive tried to watch the original show like six times and every time I just get bored with it by episode 2

Maybe it's one of those shows that broke new ground but other stuff has done it better with the benefit of hindsight, like citizen kain or bladerunner

If you want to give it a fair chance, I suggest you give it the full 3-episode test.

one of the show's main draws is its twisted take on the typical magical girl genre, which truly begins near the end of the 3rd episode

No, that's Magical Girl Raising Project. Madoka is "what if magical girls lived in our reality and not one where being 'evil' meant sending bumbling fools to a tiny town to somehow take over the world." I imagine it's pretty much incomprehensible to people who aren't familiar with magical girl tropes.

Sort of like "inside baseball."

Turns out that if your staff are good enough at their jobs, you can get a very stylish show with some compelling human drama out of the formula. It's basically just a classic fairytale horror story, and that's an ancient and popular genre for a reason.

I think the only other Urobuchi works I've experienced are Psycho Pass (I can barely remember what the gently caress happened in that poo poo) and Thunderbolt Fantasy, which has a good first and third season but the second season does the same poo poo I hated in Madoka where characters sit around expositing to each other in ways that don't present new information or advance the plot. There's so many scenes where that terrible monk character is talking about how he has basically no motivations and how maybe it'd be hosed up if he gained a bad motivation, and it really drags everything down.

cgi anime is always inferior but it seems like if you're regularly watching new anime in tyool 2022 you're mostly inured to it and the child slavery
a lot of the 2d stuff looks really bad now too so maybe thats why

its sad though, basically all old anime looks way better even the cheap crap
it doesn't seem like they work the staff to death any less either
