I absolutely installed weird pirate Windows “96” type poo poo on my family’s Packard Bell P75 and I’m not even sure anyone noticed. Even putting Windows 95 “Chicago” betas on there didn’t seem to bother anyone. Kinda miss those days.

Late 90s it was perfectly normal for a computer to have four 80mm fans screaming away at 12V all the time.

I was going to say 90s??? But you were right, it was definitely late LATE 90s. The long fan thing I bought was made around for the 90s because I remember seeing it at the PC expo a lot. You know, at those vendors that dealt nothing but fans.

There were at least three at the one I went to.

Also PC expos were cool poo poo and you could play cool games like "How many PCs are running the same demo", "Count the Re/boot style wizards/sexy ladies", or even "how many pc systems were playing Weezer that was on the Windows 95 disc?"

Now that I'm thinking about it, air ducting was important since people were trying to cram systems inside the bog standard cases available since no one wanted to waste money on building new processes to make the wide variety we see today . Trying to move air in a lovely generic case was poo poo since you really only had the back and front to pull air in/out.

And ducting is still a thing especially for blade servers. It's the only way to efficiently cool multiple CPUs and now GPUs

I did a quick search for Windows 8 ISOs and most of them came up as being around 3-4gb as expected, but one copy of x64 Professional claimed to be around 400mb. Could be a suss fileset or maybe something stripped down, but maybe that’s what he has on that CDR.

Not different versions (unless you count different media as different version) but that's me and the AC/DC Back in Black album. I'd move or otherwise lose my copy, and replace it, again and again and again.

Yeah, a legit vcd isn’t super far off vhs quality. Most of the ones that would end up in the west would be the bootlegs, but I used to hit up a cool store that had real ones in its inventory. Format definitely had some benefits.

Oh man that brings me back to the first Christmas gift I think I ever purchased with money, a DVD player for the family circa 2003. IIRC it was one of the cheapest I could find on Amazon and it turned out to not only be region free (super important since we were a bunch of Americans living in Germany) but would also play pretty much any well-formed VCD. This being before the era of affordable DVD burners it almost felt like some kind of :filez: superpower.

It definitely depended on the player, we had one that couldnt and most my vcds were watched on the psx with a gamars movie card plugged into the back for vcd decoding.

Speaking of fans, this was my setup in 2005:

That case is a Thermaltake Xaser V Damier 5000+ I picked up from a big PC expo. Five fans built in: One on the front, one on the back, one on the top and two on the side, and a (fully manual) fan controller was also included. Heavy as all hell but it was toolless. The downside of all those fans and controllers? Wiring everything up and installing the temperature sensors. Two of the fans were wired to the big knobs, and the other 3 to the controller, with a channel left over for your CPU fan if desired. There's also an RGB cycling LED in the front door and that logo in the front also lights up in either off, on or blink modes, but it generated so much noise in blink mode it was audible on my SB Live 5.1. Never bothered to use the passthrough connectors that were on the top as they were just inconveniently placed and onboard sound was even noisier.

With everything turned down it was already reasonably loud, turning everything up made it a lot louder. The inside was also a mess of wires that wasn't easy to maintain or clean up. As for other relics, I was also rocking a 4GB iPod Mini and a Nokia 6230 at the time.

In other relic news I dug up my old Lumia 640 yesterday and spent several hours trying to get it back in working order. I had it running the Windows Insider preview which meant restoring it killed Edge for some reason, had to reinstall it using a separate MS tool that knocked it back to Windows 8, then had to use some script off the XDA forum to get 10 on there, followed by three additional updates. It's running but barely any apps still function.

Pre-reset when Edge was it working it did give me this when accessing the store though:
