I haven't tried this, but it looks promising. It supposedly provides "native" DLSS/FG/Reflex support for Starfield, with the only required file being SFSE? Yes, I know there are already at least two of these, but this one integrates options in-game, among other things, and seems easier to install?

I'm maybe being overly cautious, especially since this likely won't affect save files, but I'm for the time being avoiding anything requiring SFSE

patches break it, so you have to rely on timely modder updates when those release. plus i'm just worried about it potentially screwing something else up since it's so new.

I keep finding cool locations and shooting or sneaking my way through them, but I never really feel like I finish them. Skyrim had side caves and castles that told little stories, this mine is actually a gambling den, these bandits are trying to raid a wizard's keep, there's a treasure trove somewhere in these ruins, etc. Here, I'll find a lab or a factory, maybe even overhear a line or two of dialogue about research samples from spacers in the room ahead of me, and then I shoot my way through and that's it. I've run back through some of these places, thinking I'll find a body or a data pad that will explain what I missed. So far, they've just sort of opened back up to the moon I'm on and I go on my way feeling like there's half a story I missed, or that all these places are plot related set pieces I'm finding too early by coincidence.

You have been called out, in the ways of old.
It's considered finished to me if I find the magazine that gives a permanent bonus to one of my stats, or a hexagonal loot box. A lot of these places don't really have a clear finish point beyond those.

The exploration is the game's weakest aspect which is a shame, since it's all about space

I think they feel fairly generic by design, because you’ll encounter each many times if you do any surface exploration.

i have found a couple of nice unique looking "civilian outposts" in terms of how they sit on the planet, like a spot that was built ontop of an oil pit with a bridge to it, but i think all of the exploration dungeons like "abandoned pharmaceuticals lab" are the exact same thing as every other one that shares its name

The best locations I've found so far similar to those dungeons in skyrim have been the vultures roost, mantis, and that zero G casino. None of the procgen places are interesting after the first time.

It feels like there's far fewer of those kinds of places, but they're also harder to find aa you're less likely to stumble on them.

The zero G casino was cool to look at, but I didn't found anything special, like, environmental storytelling pointing that there was a failed heist? Or unique loot.

I need to go back and unlock the master safe there. Even though Master level lockpicking sucks between the complexity of the locks and the sparsity of digipicks.

Also: First Contact Quest There doesn't seem to be any resolution here that doesn't cost me more than it makes me. Also how big of a bounty would I accrue for unaliving 2/3 members of the board of directors because gently caress those capitalist scumbags. They didn't even pay me for my services.

The lockpicking minigame is pretty good, though I enjoy small puzzles like that to begin with. Usually it's easier to back out and do a full reset on the rare occasion I make a mistake though, because losing a pick per step is expensive as hell. They do need to boost the drops on the Expert/Master level containers though to make it worth the time investment.

I feel like they had a couple different level designers though and one had no hesitation about slamming locked containers everywhere while the other was more careful about it. It feels very streaky about how often you run into them sometimes.

There’s the panel broken open below the main vault that leads to the jackpot computer, so it implies a heist. But yeah, a few notes or an audio log or the dead body of a manager locked in his office (so they couldn’t get the jackpot code) would’ve helped. So weirdly stingy about notes in this.

The lockpicking minigame is really cool and good until you get to the point where it's master level and it's just a chore of a puzzle for garbage loot and then you install the mod that makes it two steps.

open your console and see if the commands executed

there seems to be a bug with multiple txt file execution from a single ini execute line with semicolonrs, people have had success by creating a single new text file (name it execute.txt or multimod.txt or whatever), execute that file in the ini, and inside it just put

bat mod

bat othermod

bat athirdtxtmod

So the whole setup would look like

in C:\Users\<you>\Documents\My Games\Starfield\StarfieldCustom.ini

code:
[General]
sStartingConsoleCommand=bat execute
and then in execute.txt in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Starfield

code:
bat coolaimod

bat lockpickcheat

bat whatever
and just keep adding new ones if you use other console txt mods

Preset A: Intended for Performance/Balanced/Quality modes. An older variant best suited to combat ghosting for elements with missing inputs, such as motion vectors.
Preset B: Intended for Ultra Performance mode. Similar to Preset A but for Ultra Performance mode.
Preset C: Intended for Performance/Balanced/Quality modes. Generally favors current frame information; well suited for fast-paced game content.
Preset D: Default preset for Performance/Balanced/Quality modes; generally favors image stability.
Preset E: A development model that is not currently used.
Preset F: Default preset for Ultra Performance and DLAA modes.

If you're running DLAA/native res use F. If you're at like 70% res scale or so (what'd be like a quality setting in the menu in other games) try D, or C if you're using framegen and see ghosting

I was enjoying the lockpicking mini game until I hit an outpost with like seven consecutive expert locks. By the time I got “good” at the minigame I was a little tired of it. I have level 2 security and have opened hundreds of these locks by now. I only get X amount of time to play and I started to feel like lockpicking was approaching half my playtime. I almost never even need to use undos.

So I installed the easier lockpicking mod and it rules. Haven’t leveled enough to get Master locks yet.

I did the Secret Outpost?! quest in Denebola last night and it was absolutely awesome. A+ dungeon.

To make it even spicier, after I jumped in the Razorleaf, Mathis came back and ambushed me with a pirate fleet. I smoked him

The game gets a "meh" from me. It's not bad, but once I've done one or two more side-quest chains and finished up the main quest I already know I'll have zero desire to revisit it. At least not until long after the modding scene is fully established and I can fix the various annoyances. Like Bethesda's perplexing decision to hide what should be core gameplay stuff behind perks.

Bethesda chasing the procgen-dragon and making a bazillion planets was definitely a mistake. Just like it was a mistake for everyone else who tried it. In Skyrim I very rarely used fast-travel. I actually enjoyed walking from city to city as there were variations in the scenery that made it enjoyable to to look around. And the various caves and whatnot you explored certainly were all build from the same few building blocks, but they were different enough that it didn't get boring.
In Starfield the planets are just dull. Just vast, empty expanses with nothing interesting to look at. And when you do stumble upon something, it's something like an abandoned research tower which will be the exact same - down to the mine placement in front of the door - to the every single other abandoned research tower.
A common criticism of Skyrim was that it was a mile wide and an inch deep. And it almost feels as if Bethesda took that as a compliment and doubled down on it.
