My assumption is:

A. NATO will now overrun us  LAUNCH THE NUKES!!

B. Ukraine is Russia much like Taiwan is China and doesn't deserve the right to exist as a separate nation.

The idea that losing the war will mean humiliation and reparations and that is somehow utterly unacceptable an an existential threat was reflected in a Meduza article from this summer about changing opinions among the anti-war in Russia: https://meduza.io/en/feature/2023/06/03/the-only-thing-worse-than-war-is-losing-one

quote:

[Meduza’s] question [about why some readers support the war] is actually wrongly put. I don’t support the war, but I also don’t want Russia to lose. If that happens, it will be worse for everybody, and there’s no doubt the world we’re used to will collapse — and an even greater darkness will come. The war was a mistake, but losing it is unacceptable.

Russia has entered a new sadness. The thing is the Black Sea fleet is the deterrent Russia loves to use. I mean they were doing it in Syria and buzzing our ships. They did the same thing in Cyprus as well. The Black Sea fleet has always stood as something they can walk around and threaten with. So the loss of it by Ukraine is absolutely terrifying to the mainstream russian. It's basically the golden fleet to them. So that's most likely why you're seeing the telegrams that are usually pro Russia lose their minds about what's happened over the last couple days. I mean they're losing the last pieces of their high technical equipment. Subs, S400 batteries, I mean everything. They are being deleted now as such a rapid rate.

Ukraine doesn't have to move forward quickly. It can level the field over the next couple months and pave the way for F-16s to dominate the skies.

It can also pay the way for a naval invasion of crimea. Which I know sounds loving crazy but Ukraine could land troops in small boats to probe the defenses. I mean it's pretty clear that they're already doing this. They were able to ride into Crimea and plant a flag. They had people on the ground directing fire for the drones. I mean they are in very close workings with the Crimean resistance movements. They have safe houses safe havens that they can rely on in the face of the Russian occupation. As a crazy thing to imagine but I have talked about a general Ukrainian strike on the occupied area in combination with an front wife assault by Ukraine. If something like that did occur it would be a death sentence for the occupation. As the Russian army would have to deal with shitloads of citizens pissed off behind the lines attacking them as well as ukrainians in the front attacking them.

Russia is really getting to the last legs here. I mean sure it's a long process but when you have to start conscripting vegetables into the army you are at the end of your life.

That does sound like a good trashy airport novel, yes.

This one is especially rich:

quote:

I support the actions of my president and my country. Yes, I didn’t initially understand the purpose of this whole “operation,” but after some time, I saw the Russophobic statements from both the European Union and the U.S. Anyone with critical thinking skills and a modicum of intelligence understands: Russia is not a “terrorist state,” we’re just protecting our interests and our sovereignty.

Russophobic statements? Calling Russia a terrorist state? Was this before or after they started terrorizing innocent people?

His view is Ukranian allies are prepared to write a blank cheque forever and whatever it will take for what concerns Ukranian sovereignity and 2014 borders, but not so much about recapturing Crimea and Donbass. They aught to show progress and results, which influences military decisions.

While this war isn't existential for Russia and Russians, it is existential for the ruling elite of Russia, because dragging a country into a pointless war and losing just highlights all the mismanagement and incompetence of the Russian state apparatus.

The Ruling elites' only hope is convincing the Russian populace that the current state of affairs is not their fault, but the result of a massive conspiracy against Russia and Russians.
