The main thing I remember about the new (""new"", the reboot is a decade old already.) Lara was that there was a lot of discussion around the really harsh death cutscenes. Trying to apply logic to the censorship weirdos is kinda futile, because they also get riled up by people making a photoshop, and then getting angry that the photoshop isn't real. (Weren't some people annoyed that the lady rabbit in the new Space Jam was 'censored/woke'.... because the image they used as reference was from some furry porn?)

At this point there's a contingent of people addicted to turning the crank on the outrage machine for attention and/or money. There's nothing too petty or irrelevant for them to screech about and we're beyond the pale in so many ways. The last few months on twitter have been a microcosm of outrage farming and things will probably get worse

Easy one: Could they be bigger? Have they been drawn bigger in porn fanart? Then it's evil censorship, to be blamed on woke Western audiences.

The problem was that in the new games they tried to make her into a character, rather than a silent mannequin

The problem was also that the death scenes were almost pornographic in their depiction of Lara getting stabbed, crushed, drowned, and sliced.

Late to the party, but I'm fairly certain that "irredeemable media" Tumblr user is a high schooler listing every media property they've encountered that gave them the ick. That's why all the properties are either 1) modern-day stuff made for children and/or terminally-online people or 2) high school assigned reading. Like a lot of Tumblr SJWs, they're a kid with a lot of passion and no perspective. They'll most likely mellow out in a few years. Anyway I'm trying to find that "if you mistreat your OC you should lose custody of them" post but Tumblr's search function sucks

Yeah, I saw them years after they were originally released and they were incredibly creepy and gross in the way they managed to conflate a violent death with weird sexualized noises.

I really enjoyed the new Tomb Raider games, but I like the Far Cry games and New Raider felt like Far Cry as a third-person shooter. Run around shooting bad guys with a bow and arrows while raiding tombs? Sign me up. The Lara death scenes were pretty yikes, though.

I liked that they played the Crofts as having a history of being totally bugfuck crazy. Lara pretty quickly fell into kind of unhinged in the second and third games. There was kind of a recurring thing where Jonah was pretty much her anchor to sanity.

They weren't literally porn, but they were definitely to the detriment of the game. There was no reason to have extremely detailed scenes of Lara desperately grasping at a steel bar that had impaled her throat, etc etc. How exactly is this adding to the experience? Some of the stuff would have been too hosed up even in a slasher movie.

You know how you can see a drawing that happens to include feet, and it's just oh, there's some feet there, like it's someone in swimwear on a beach or something, just normal barefootedness. But then you see another one and the feet just obviously had way more care and attention put into them than any of the rest of the piece? Feet aren't inherently sexual, BUT...

Byzantine posted:I never saw the death scenes as anything but 'the island is extremely deadly and will kill you in an instant' and it's pretty weird how many people saw them and thought 'wow, this is porn'. Some of them are fine but for some of them they're really gratuitous, intimate, and the camera lingers just a touch too long. Like I don't really know if it was necessary to show Lara get impaled on a branch through the throat and have her flail around for a few seconds before going still. And then to have that death animation possibly trigger in three or four different sequences throughout the game. Or the couple times where you can get caught and have a dude hold Lara's head as he slowly slits her throat

i'm not going to accuse anyone of getting off to it because that's weird, but it does remain funny that it had all that kind of poo poo in it despite its reputation as being the serious, mature remake of the "bad-old-days", before-we-knew-any-better, PS1 games

I've always found it weird that with as much flak as those Tomb Raider death scenes have caught, no one ever mentions the end of Far Cry 3, which was released around the same time. The player's final act is a choice of whether or not to graphically slit the throat of the player character's girlfriend, who is tied up and begging for her life. To me, that's a lot worse. I don't know how it slipped under everyone's radar.

yeah that's why I don't think it was like "pornographic", so much as, there was this really stupid period where people put that kind of poo poo in games to come off as being really "serious"

I feel the same way about Mortal Kombat Fatalities. Not being a teen ghoul also probably shades your reaction to torture porn and gore.

People whose income isn't based on the outrage machine tend to mellow out, flame out, or move on. However, there is always a new crop of people to replace them so the intensity always stays the same or goes up if more people get involved.
