Yeah in general I go FC in Arena to practice BO timings and Feudal Scout rushes in open maps to practice attack timings. In open maps I scout their stone come feudal but in Arena and Hideout it's a bit trickier to see whether they're mining or not

You can get AOE3 DE plus all the faction packs for about $20 in the current sale. The learning curve is rougher than in the other age games but it has crazy faction diversity.

I will probably get back into the game when it's out, I'm curious what exactly the gameplay differences will be in variants, safe to assume teutonic knights as a unique unit for the HRE variant since everyone loved those guys in aoe2.

With the increasing prominence of the Eastern Roman Empire in popular culture with them featured in games like this, or Civilization, or Paradox games, it always tickles me reading this stuff because at this point most pop history enthusiasts know that you shouldn't be using the term 'Byzantine Empire', buuuuuuut its just so much easier since Eastern Roman Empire doesn't exactly roll off the tongue and it creates confusing questions about the nature of the Roman state that we don't really want to have to get into, so its always ends up going like "We're introducing the Byzantines*!

*Byzantine is a exonym imposed on the empire centuries later by mostly post Renaissance western European historians trying to deny the rightfully Roman nature of the Empire, we here at Microsoft recognize that it is far more historically accurate to use the term Eastern Roman Empire, or Medieval Roman Empire"

Anyway, I wonder what they mean by Variant civs, they don't go into much detail here, is it something like the different leaders with different bonuses and agendas for the same civ in the Civilization series?

According to a streamer it's basically a brand new civ in terms of balance. I assume they'll share most art assets (buildings, unit models, etc.), have some unique skins and a different gameplay plan. Like infantry-focused French or w/e

There were some names for the variant civs on the xbox store that have since been taken down so they may have been placeholders/development names:

Abbasid - The Sultan's Army

China - Empire of Jade

French - Jeanne d'Arc

HRE - Order of the Dragon

My theorycrafting:

Jean d'Arc - French religious movements e.g. Crusader States, Cathars, the Anti-Pope

Order of the Dragon - Knightly orders; Teutonic Order, Templars, Hostpitallers etc

Army of the Sultan - Syrian and Egyptian dynasties; Fatimids, Burids, Ayyubids, Mamluks

Empire of Jade - Northern Turkic dynasties; Kara Khitan, Jin, Xi Xia, Chagatai?

It's going to be hilarious if those end up actually being the variant names :allears:

Age of Noob actually has a whole video out on the new civs so the names are basically confirmed to be those from the leak. They are added to the civ dropdown menu and they are very different from the base - they share some units, landmarks, buildings, etc. but they are different enough you need to relearn them even as a main of the base civ they originate from. Some (all?) of the variant civs include heroes so I'd assume at the very least it's Joan d'Arc and uhhhh Saladin?

We likely won't know more before they start teasing things over the next two months.

Will be interesting to see if the campaigns are a step above the release campaigns that were obviously made before a hundred different balance changes to the main game.

that is dead sure to win.

Forgotten Empires had already been stretching it with some of their “civilizations” in AoE2, but an order that wasn’t created until the fifteenth century, a generic name for an army, an empire that did not exist, and one (1) person sure kills that idea altogether. How rushed was this that they couldn’t research some actual civilization or polity and insert whatever game mechanics they were planning on?

The most hilarious part of all this is that when the base civs that were getting a variant were revealed, so many Redditors were dead certain it was going to be Hospitalliers for the French, Teutons for the HRE, Fatimids for the Abassids and loving Korea for the Chinese :allears:

The first is to be born in Joseon.
Ill take 2 civs for $15 if theyre the same quality as the base ones, thats an aggressively reasonable price in this day and age.

They renamed Sultan's Army and Empire of Jade, they're the Ayyubids and Zhu Xi's Legacy now. The main gimmick behind the Jean d'Arc variant civ is that you start the game with your eponymous hero as a villager and she acquires experience over the course of a match, becoming increasingly more powerful as a combat unit. Honestly it sounds sick

Since they are committed to having hero units (a mechanic I’m not super fond of), it would actually be kind of interesting to see a AoM-esque game in the medieval era that is relatively faithful to chansons de geste and the like.

I've really only liked heroes in wc3 (outstanding) and RA2 (pretty good). Every other RTS with them they're either way too weak and easy to lose track of or so strong you can destroy entire armies, mostly the former

Ra Ra Rasputin

The AoE4 variant civs remind me a little of age of mythology, you'd have the Civilization itself like Greek that shared a lot of units and mechanics, but you'd have Zeus, Poseidon, Hades variants that would change your starting bonuses and entire game plan and focus on different unit types and unique unit and tech access.

The Mountain Royals

New civs: Armenians (Composite Bowman and Warrior Priest) and Georgians (Monaspa cavalry)

New Campaigns: Tamar's Ascension (Georgians), Thoros the Great (Armenians), and Ismail (Persians)

Between this and the upcoming CK2 expansion Persophiles are eating good right now.

Yeah, it's kinda weird for the Persians to have War Elephants as a UU when all the Indian and SE Asian civs just have something similar as a regular unit

I doubt they would ever consider getting rid of them, the thing is, if Persian don't get War Elephants, who does? Obviously one of the Indian or SEA civs but I have a very hard time seeing how they can be neatly crammed into any of their tech trees.

That said, I had a 7-game losing streak yesterday which was fun. I was hovering around 1100 for a week but got smote back down to 1000 again. I've been mostly doing fun CA things with Tatars and Koreans and tried to venture into Viets with apparently catastrophic results.
