(spoilers for 6, LaD, the trailers for infinite wealth) the series is too optimistic for kiryu to basically see his grandson and think "i'm doing the right thing," and then revert to how he was at the beginning of yakuza 5. i think his cameo in LaD does a good job of making it seem like ichiban was a side character in whatever kiryu was doing. not sure how gaiden will play out plot-wise (who cares, he has rocket shoes and he can have a new hat), but having him cope with cancer actually seems like a better way to close out his story and the way they sort of blend the JRPG with the brawler gameplay looks cool.
