The complaint is not that minibars are overpriced, of course they are. In 2013 I went on a road trip from Seattle through to LA and then across to NY and stayed at many motels and cheaper hotels and never ran into such an insane prohibition. I don't even think they could possible charge you just for "opening the door", since how could you see whether you want to buy anything?

Any more than that, and the essential humanity of the check in lady asserts itself. Any less, and the check in lady thinks to herself "Yeah, gently caress this guy! I can't wait for him to see that he got billed $16 for a bottle of water!!"

Criminal even. Used to be they'd have complimentary bottles of water sitting in the rooms since they went through them by the truckload and were all branded for the hotel. Only things ever charged were from the minibar.

Lol where the hell are you you people staying? I travel for work all the time and stay at decent places and the only time I’ve ever paid for parking is if the only option is a garage and I usually get one or two bottles of water per night for free. Hell I stayed overnight in Boston at the Omni Parker last weekend and you just ask at the front desk for bottled water or a free fridge. Do some research and stay at better hotels.

If your hotel has a gym it probably has a water dispenser of some kind in it that you can use to fill up for free. If the hotel you're staying in doesn't have a gym it's probably a crummy hotel.
