Its normally a "store" card, not their personal card. I don't know how its tracked specifically, but its always been a thing as long as I've talked to the retail grocery people.

I had a buddy who did the personal card, but it was at a gas station rewards thing, and he would only do it once or twice a day for people. So it probably flew under the radar or his GM didn't care enough, I suspect because he showed the gently caress up for every shift and covered for people a lot.

Cue having a pool of absolutely pissed off employees. Giving "unlimited PTO" that you have to beg for approval for puts the power more into the employer's hands when you haven't "earned" the hours you "deserve" to be able to take when you need to, imo. And my company was so backlogged and understaffed that requesting PTO was like adding another strike to your record. 3 strikes and you're out, ya know. I've posted it here once, before, but my boss came to me one day and said it seemed like I was feeling under the weather so I should use their "unlimited PTO" to take the rest of the day off. A few days later, he let me go, saying that taking that day off (THAT HE TOLD ME TO TAKE OFF) was "too much" and violated his policies. Yeah. Straight up rear end. HOLES.

Their piece of poo poo company is dying a bit now, though, so I'll just revel in this schadenfreude as they panic.

Yes, I know I'm old, get off my fucking lawn so I can yell at these clouds.

I refuse to work any place that offers unlimited PTO simply because it's far, far too easy for me to fall into a comfortable groove and just not take time off. If it's a defined thing - even a lovely use it or lose it model - then I know it's racking up and eventually I'll schedule a week off if only to avoid working for free.

Even if I'm just sitting around playing video games, watching daytime TV, and shitposting for a week it's time off and ultimately needed.

Current job that spiked my ADA request from a past screed (or POST if you will) cut 6.5% of the workforce for "reasons". Even our internal finance meeting reasons were vague and overshadowed on the great return the investors got for the last 3 years.
A few people in the office know I am looking for a way out but they have been quiet about it, "Not-Dumb things in my office" I guess despite allowing my frustration and job hunt to leak out..

It is hard talking to my boss about anything non-work related because I am just lying to their face that everything's is fine. I do not trust her boss and anyone above them, got to protect my financial life.
She is great but now have zero power or say in anything involving her actual team.
We were talking about the real possibility of people jumping ship and making the crunch even harder and BING a payroll person just resigned, the chaos begins!

If fact she was pulling us aside to tell us how proud she is with us dealing with the headcount cut, we had extra event money so the regional boss ( the snake) decided to get us 30$ in starbucks cards each, even though she told him half of us do not drink coffee And i can't stand the stuff) she and her husband do, so she offered to buy them off us in cash. I mean it's a small thing but so nice of her to do, I would have just given them to a buddy who loves coffee.

My trainee in another country has shown their limit in learning the duties we are trying to move but hey moving advanced procedure that help to have an advanced degree OR at least 2 solid years in accounting would help. Their cheaping out on the hire is killing my time/motivation and we are now a month behind in duties transfer while I scramble with the extra work from the head cut.

Half of my email is "improve your life skill with pop--culture nonsense/wellness practices/how AI is changing everything spend time you don't have on another presentation" internal nonsense and draining motivation as well.

Accounting is a real fast-track for hating people and feeling bad for the great workers who get walled off. Oh wait that can be any job can't it.
Sadly this company will not pay any price for this overall nonsense when their not so secret "future acquisition" they did this headcount cut for happens, but I wish more people would just leave and MAYBE show someone they are up their own asses.

But I have been careful in my job applications. In a month and a half I have had 4 in person interviews which feels good even if two were duds and two are kinda in the air and I am not stopping now.
The hardest part is not getting into a flight response and just taking whatever I can. I'm a bit old to do that and have to job-hunt all over again.

Was this a rant? I dunno, it seems to fit the thread.

I work for the state government. We're closed every year between Christmas and New Year's Day. Whatever days aren't on a weekend or officially made part of the state holiday, we have to use PTO to cover. I just started this year. I don't have a lot of PTO to begin with. I'm also pissed that job downtime based around a holiday I don't celebrate prevents me from working, instead of working those 32 hours and banking it for religious holidays I do observe (like, this coming Monday).

I was working at DQ in high school, one of my more tolerable coworkers gets stopped on his way home as a manager sees part of a Dilly Bar sticking out of a pocket on his coat. Manager asks him if there are more, and dude has at least a dozen bars on him. Manager fires him on the spot. Dude's mom comes in next day to yell at the manager about how unfair it is.
What is hilarious is people stole from that place like it was a hobby, but this dude got greedy for a 50 cent dillybar.

Software Etc: One guy was fired for not showing up at his shift, didn't answer calls, and finally arrived on a Saturday to work when he wasn't scheduled. He thought he just had to show up whenever he wanted to.

Tech support: A coworker on the helpdesk was hard to work with, but competent enough. He volunteered for this extra late shift and spent every minute on that shift working on his other job, and would ignore some calls. What got him though was he volunteered for the Saturday shift, which was normally a day you did almost nothing and basically would read/do homework/play GBA games. He decided to take a nap and got caught by the department manager who stopped by to get his jacket.

I love having a week off between Christmas and the New Year for free. I've worked places where you didn't get paid for that time and had to use vacation hours if you wanted to get paid, which made it basically impossible to build up real vacation/PTO because you were using five to 10 days just for that outage. My current job is salaried, so I could get asked to do something during that time, but because almost every vendor we use is shut down for the same stretch I'm basically on vacation. I still hate that people (or me in past companies) have to choose between not getting paid and using vacation time during a company mandated shutdown, though. I feel like that should be illegal. I will say that the eight hours of pay I got for showing up for 30 minutes the day after Thanksgiving was pretty sweet, though. Literally logged in, hit two buttons and left with double pay and the smallest increment of time the company recognized for OT being four hours meant a huge difference that week.

I worked for a company that made people take vacation time during mandatory shutdowns but for some reason one year they changed the policy and said that if you didn't have enough vacation banked then it's fine and you still got it as long as you're "on call".

That is, for every team but mine. My manager insisted that I have to be in the office and since everyone else had vacation to spend I had to go in by myself like an idiot.

A utility company I worked for had just about every employee get a company credit card. This was a little while ago, but I vaguely remember there being something a little wonky with how they were rolled out. I believe the bills went to the individual employee, and you had to submit expenses to get reimbursed. So almost like the company co-signed on the credit card. Maybe I am just remembering wrong.

Anyways, some dumb firings happen because people were using these cards for personal purchases. One person basically used the card as a line of credit to remodel their house. When that person got found out, and fired, it caused an auditing of the cards that got a few other people fired.

There was one super well liked IT person who was using the card like a payday loan to float himself to the next paycheck. Rumor had it that he was paying off everything he charged right away, so he probably would not have gotten caught if it were not for the audit.

That company also had a rather draconian IT policy. A really well liked trainer got fired for having a family picture on his laptop. Supposedly nothing bad, just a personal picture that would not look out of place on someone’s desk.

Of course there was the eventual full audit of web usage, and someone got fired for looking up a camel toe website on company computers.

I'm going to blow a gasket on Slack if this keeps up.

Honestly, how loving hard is it to take an extra five seconds to check things like the ABV on a spreadsheet or look at the beers on tap so don't put a second keg of the same beer on?

My first job after graduating college (public accounting firm) had the same set-up, and considering that over half of the people they hired were hired directly out of college, I'm retroactively surprised that I never heard of anyone getting disciplined for misusing their company-issued credit card. I used to work in accounting and the worst I've seen was people having to pay out of pocket when they crossed the line on stuff like meal expenses. There were set lines (which I frequently let through because gently caress raising hell for someone going 3 dollars over the fuckin daily limit), and that was the worst offense. People usually got mad they had to pay out of pocket for massive excesses but they had like 80 dollars a day in budget to eat. not theft but the music manager/promoter at my last job just used the joint's bar for his own little bullshit devices. havin bartenders stay late for him and his friends on dead nights (and then not tipping well at all), abusing free drink privileges, hookin the homies up

which is cool and/or whatever when you have an established successful-ish place, but this joint really needed to be steered straight post-COVID, and we basically had a few staff leave and nobody wanted shifts when they may have been at his whim. very hard to run a bar with that going on

really i somewhat struggle with the fact that pretty much no live music occurs without lovely hospitality capitalism.

I know one person who got fired for misusing his company credit card to “accidentally” pay for Christmas presents one year, only to cancel them as an accidental personal expense which was taken out of his next pay cheque. This prompted an investigation and showed he’d had a load of hotel rooms booked on his personal card for meetings that never took place, and he’d been cancelling the bookings and pocketing this refunds.

And I know one of our suppliers who got done for expensing a stripper, he was a fun guy. He still got a reference and another job in the same industry, so we’ll played in my opinion.

My predecessor at my first non-Americorps job after college at a capitol city library communications job stole 1,400 books and movies by checking them out in the system under her account and fake ones, and altering the records later. The police raided her house and it was national news. She ended up with 30 days on jail and 200 hours of community service in the end.

That was a fun anecdote to bond over with my coworkers. Anywho I drank my way out of that job in just a few months. Then began nearly decade long journey of substance abuse escalation, deescalation, and becoming a pretty functional person, employee, and now California sober dad.

So some industrial concern bulk ordered a couple dozen of one of our simplest most “base model Honda Civic”-rear end machines. Like a solid quarter of the cleanroom is this one machine.

The problem is the test equipment, management doesn’t replace test equipment enough, so there’s a queue to get a handful of items. Also as a standard part of testing these machines have to get up to 250C, then cool back down, and that’s an hours long process.

As an aside, the workmanship on these machines is the highest I’ve ever seen, and not just our work, the suppliers also had great QA. It’s kinda funny that all this great work is in service of like a dishwasher microcontroller manufacturer or whatever.

I know working sucks, but I’m always baffled at the people who don’t even want to do the basic thing they were hired to do. I’m all for saying “piss off” when someone asks you to go above and beyond, but the “No, I am going to meltdown at doing the thing I am being paid to do” is the oddest thing.

I used to do overnight security at a mall. I got told when I started “don’t fall asleep. Write a report when something happens or you find an unlocked door. If something big happens. Call management.” The amount of people I heard that got fired when I left because they could no do these things was more than one and I was amazed (I was friends with someone who worked there for quite a while after I left)

That also triggered a memory for me. Guy I worked with doing security got fired for having sex on the job. Did they catch him at night on video? No my friends. He tried to do this (again, at a mall) during the day in a place that led to roof access. The management was showing someone around and tried to show them the roof and found the access door locked. They didn’t catch him in the act, but he was still putting on clothes and there was a woman with him who was absolutely not supposed to be there. Wasn’t hard to put 2 and 2 together. What a way to go.
