Of a thing which could not be put back. Not be made right again. In the deep glens where they lived all things were older than man and they hummed of mystery.”

i don't even think it would matter since the us electorate has been so brain-wormed by industry propaganda that people literally think recycling their loving plastic or buying a brand new car with a thousand pounds of lithium in it is going to fight climate change, but just in case The Great Climate Awakening happens and everybody is on the same page that we need to sink all the cruise ships, halt all airline travel, crush every car into a 12 inch wide cube, and enforce a policy of gunpoint degrowth on industry, none of that poo poo is ever going to happen any more than any of the other things there's broad popular consensus about is ever going to happen by vote

one ancient supreme court justice deciding she wanted a high score on her personal wikipedia page had more influence on the trajectory of american policy than the next 300,000,000 people behind her voting for whatever they wanted

quote:

[United States representative on the Stockholm convention, and EPA member]Kovner was also in close contact with a powerful chemical industry trade group about the other compound, UV-328, which prevents plastic from deteriorating in sunlight. In order to be restricted under the Stockholm Convention, a pollutant must be shown to travel long distances. UV-328 was the first chemical that the convention decided met that criteria because it is transported by plastic debris that accumulates in bodies of water around the globe and in the migratory birds that eat it.

In April 2019, a representative from the American Chemistry Council, a trade group for chemical manufacturers, emailed Kovner to alert her of the proposal to consider limits on UV-328 under the Stockholm Convention based on its presence in microplastics, or pieces of plastic debris about the size of a sesame seed that accumulate in the environment and contain multiple chemicals.

“Wow — that’s quite a precedent. Holy moly,” she responded in an email, as the Greenpeace publication Unearthed has reported.

The chemical trade group representative wrote that they had seen several presentations about “getting microplastics into Stockholm.”

“Welcome to our future,” Kovner responded.

New Hansen paper is out http://www.columbia.edu/~jeh1/mailings/2023/UhOh.14August2023.pdf

quote:

A new climate frontier. The leap of global temperature in the past two months is no ordinary fluctuation. It is fueled by the present extraordinarily large Earth’s energy imbalance (EEI). EEI is the proximate cause of global warming. The large imbalance suggests that each month for the rest of the year may be a new record for that month. We are entering a new climate frontier. When the first author gave a TED talk 10 years ago, EEI was about 0.6 W/m2, averaged over six years (that may not sound like much, but it equals the energy in 400,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs per day, every day). Now EEI has approximately doubled. Most of that energy is going into the ocean. If Southern Hemisphere sea ice cover remains low, much of that excess energy will be poured into the Southern Ocean, which is one of the last places we would want it to go.

quote:

Political leaders at the United Nations COP (Conference of the Parties) meetings give the impression that progress is being made and it is still feasible to limit global warming to as little as 1.5°C. That is pure, unadulterated, hogwash, as exposed by minimal understanding of Fig. 6 here and Fig. 27 in reference 6

Obligatory cope

quote:

That does not mean that the problem is unsolvable. It is possible to restore Earth’s energy balance. Perhaps, if the public finds the taste of the new climate frontier to be sufficiently disagreeable, we can begin to consider the actions needed to restore a propitious climate.

yep, if we stop using all of our current energy sources tomorrow maybe in a few thousand years the earth will return to a temperature that can support a climate humans would be able to survive in comfortably
