It is pretty goofy that consumer grade toys are basically the peak of ergonomics and usability for remote guided tools, which is just a little silly when it's like an under water rover and kind of creepy when it's a tool for turning people into hamburger. I get why this happened but just like, a little funny/ weird and not something I remember any sci-fi even very goofy ones coming up with.

Which partially makes sense because that's what the people you're training are already used to using, and partially makes sense because left to their own devices the military makes controls like the blowpipe and poo poo.

I heard from an iRobot guy that they originally made a custom controller for their EOD bots that met all sorts of ridiculous requirements like EMP resistance but it wasn’t 100% dustproof and unbreakable and cost five figures per unit so eventually they gave up and just started buying crates of DualShocks and modding them because it was cheaper that way even if you treated them as literal one-use items
