Oh thank feck for that. I've been thinking for a while that it might be worth badgering the avian vet for a more immediate appointment, but I guessed you know your local vets a lot better than i do. Fingers crossed they are good enough vets to prioritise a fragile little budgie and take good care of his lovely self. Pookah fucked around with this message at 09:54 on Sep 21, 2023 |

Fingers and toes crossed that Pesto gets diagnosed with something specific and treatable In sad news today, I was just letting my dog out for a wee when I heard a very parrot-y shriek, and looked up to see a ringneck flying past. I did a bunch of whistling and budgie chattering, and he/she did answer a few times and circled a bit. We got a video of ringnecks calling on to play on speakerphone, and the bird came pretty close but the drat local birds got spooked and chased him/her away I really don't think it was a feral/wild bird because it was so ready to talk to us. We tried really hard to get the bird to come closer, but I still feel like poo poo that we couldn't do anything. Poor baby.

My nightmare is to find a lost parrot outside and not being able to do anything about it. Pesto is back home with me now. It's not good news. He has Macrorhabdus, a fairly common yeast that can really harm a bird if it infects them. It's causing his liver to swell and press on his air sacs. Dijon is highly likely to be infected as well but is asymptomatic. There's a chance he can survive this and recover with a different round of medications. The vet said the fact he's preening, moving and eating is a good sign. My friend gave me a ride back and Pesto gave two loud flock calls during the ride. I haven't heard his voice so loud in weeks. And while he can't fly still, his hops are gaining more height.

Plant MONSTER. posted:My nightmare is to find a lost parrot outside and not being able to do anything about it. You have a diagnosis, that is a genuine improvement. He can be treated with the right medication, and he's a young bird who was healthy before this started. Please don't despair

I'm very glad to hear that you not only got to see a vet earlier than anticipated, but that you got a concrete diagnosis out of it to boot. This puts you and Pesto way, way ahead of the curve.

Not to make light of the diagnosis for even a second, but your little fighter has made it this far. These parrots are fragile, and when they battle through an illness like this it's one hell of a good sign. So happy you know what to fight.

On the phone, the vet mentioned the option of euthanasia which caused me to break down and cry. It's like he obviously wants to keep fighting. He's still interacting with his world. He still seeks the company of Dijon. He even flock called - a third one in 24 hours! He's eating and drinking. Hell, he seems to even like the medicated water he's being given. Took a chug and went for more. He cares about his looks. He wants to live! When I expressed that they seemed to agree. For a sick budgie, he is showing gusto. They even remarked how he's such an amazing sweet little guy on his care sheet. They get a lot of uncooperative budgies. For anyone curious, he is now receiving Enrofloxacin and Metacam twice daily and his water is treated with potassium benzoate...

I wouldn't worry too much about the euthanasia part of the discussion. I've gone through that, and held my parrot as he went. But we were at a point where he was having multiple strokes, almost nonstop, without responding to treatment. Your parrot clearly has quality of life, even if they are feeling a little down. That's the option for when they are unable to continue, period.

That vet sounds really insensitive and I'm sorry you had to go through that. Why tf would they bring up euthanasia when he's being treated for his ailment? Stories like this make mad (okay sad) at the thought that the majority of people who buy budgies buy them as decorations and not pets. Probably most owners do give up and don't bother with treatment if they even go to the vet in the first place. Anyway that all said I'm glad to hear you got Pesto checked out and diagnosed! I hope he keeps improving. I feel so lucky I have a vet nearby, with an amazing avian specialist, that can get me in in a couple of days if I needed. And even brought me in the same day when I said I was getting worried.

If you as pet owner aren't in the best financial situation, and won't be able to afford the proper treatment for your pet, it might be good to be reminded that euthanasia is also an alternative to letting your pet suffer.

Yeah, it seemed very much like a protocol thing as well: list every single option there is, including euthanasia. Because while they acknowledge his tenacity, I know in my heart that he is still suffering in ways I couldn't imagine. If his quality of life vanishes then that would be the most humane option. We aren't there yet, though!

Serra is starting to molt, and had what might have been the most derp'd out moment of her life. Yes, her tail feather got stuck. Yes, she flipped her poo poo. Side Comment - After something was pointed out on one of my Youtube videos, I feel obligated to say this - Serra gets her nails done once a month. The vet told me her "main" nails, whatever the fancy word is for them, are very "big" even when trimmed. Like all things Serra, she has some drat talons. But they aren't neglected.

Pesto seems to be bit less listless lately. Definitely more pitter-pattery than before. I can't just scoop him up easily anymore because he's starting to scoot away and resist.
