lmao at the switch somehow running MGS2 at half the framerate that it ran on the PS2

It’s really incredible that a pirated version of the no longer available mgs2 pc port with a fan patch will likely run better at a higher resolution than those. I really hope they can be patched if it’s like it seems and maxing out at 1080p somehow in 2023. Just thinking about metal gear rising and how even though there is a patch to fix the resolution above 1080p you can run into a game breaking bug pretty easily with it.

Recently finished Kentucky Route 0 and I'm still itching for something narrative focused... would appreciate some recs.

Things roughly in the same vein that I've already played & enjoyed:

I really, really recommend Pentiment

More narratively deep "detective games":
Hypnospace Outlaw
Obra Dinn depending on what you liked about Gone Home?
Oh! The Case of the Golden Idol might not quite fit but it's amazing and don't let the off-putting art style off-put you
If you like Aviary Attorney, the Ace Attorney games are pretty much exactly that (and also on sale)

EDIT: Does Outer Wilds count? If it does, it's my strongest recommendation next to Pentiment

Roadwarden

I got this and Pentiment at the same sale and it's Roadwarden that I got pulled into first after starting both games. It's got a bit of a throwback text adventure game interface where every thing is done through descriptive text but the characters are interesting and kooky enough to care about how their story lines fail or succeed.

First time I chose not to get any of the undead village solutions because I was waiting to find a perfect one and ended up accidentally allowing the creation of a lich sorcerer that will gather strength to one day plague the world. Oops. The time limit on the first play through will cause some quest lines to be incomplete so it's a game that's good for at least two runs if you are looking from something with replayability.

I have two games that I'm aware of on my radar that just released today, but whereas Airship: Kingdoms Adrift seems pretty unfinished/mid, Astrea: Six-Sided Oracles seems very good for those of the roguelike deckbuilder (dicebuilder) persuasion, as indicated by people who somehow already have hundreds of hours in it (presumably from demos/beta access, unless they have learned to defy the laws of time). Gimme a sec to see if I can fish out the review I did of it for a festival...

I really like the sound of Astrea and the 100% reviews so far are pretty convincing, but my brain has a hard time with that presentation. Pastel gibberish covering every inch of the screen

Yeah I was already interested in that game, and when I saw they made it I snatched it right away. It's ludicrously cheap on GOG right now, too

Their worldbuilding is just so good. Dystopian megacorps are a dime-a-dozen, but I can't say I've ever seen "dystopian megacorp that's also the dominant religion after disproving god and inventing heaven" before

I really enjoyed Roadwarden. I played in the mode with no time limits though. The music is really, really good considering most of it is some creative noodling around an acoustic guitar. Very memorable.

The characters were well written and interesting and I found the story quite compelling. Would recommend, especially if you're into text adventure games.

I tried the demo and was immediately hooked, and that feeling lasted the entire game. I did need to use a guide to solve some of the open ended, "enter text to indicate what to do" parts though.

I loved Roadwarden; the third-person combat was weighty and visceral, and I really enjoyed building my armored-up car for vehicle combat. The Wastelands were full of interesting characters, although I would have liked an easier time finding fuel early on. Mel Gibson really gave personality to Max, which the game built on and expanded. I’m hoping for a sequel: can’t wait to tear up Bartertown!

I have it but put off playing it because I was super excited for it and then saw this spoiler (I'm pretty sure it is the one you're talking about) and even if I know it is good knowing the spoiler it's super disappointing that it was spoiled for me and I don't get the full effect of the idea.
