Postal Service was so much better and had way better energy.

Agree with both of these takes. I had zero idea that Lauren Mayberry was opening though, so that was a cool surprise.

Yeah, I usually stand at the back of the venue for shows, especially at the 930 or Anthem. And maybe one out of every 5 times I'm there, I'll some girl wanting to clear floor space so that she can dance wildly, and will bump into us on purpose as she's dancing to move out of the way.

We have pavilion seats for this so hopefully we avoid that bullshit.

Also the venue I'm seeing Lauren Mayberry sent this:

quote:

Hello,

Thanks for purchasing tickets to see Lauren Mayberry at Lincoln Hall next week.

We have some exciting news! As a special bonus for her fans, Lauren will be performing a FREE DJ set after her show at Lincoln Hall on 9/22. There will be a brief intermission after the show, but stick around - her DJ set will begin at 11pm and all 21+ ticket holders are invited.

Looking forward to having you at the show!

One of the first songs released, Space Invader, is possibly my favorite song from them since the High Violet days, especially when the coda kicks in.

It's good OP. Country Mitski just freaking works and I Don't Like My Mind is equal parts hilarious and devastating. My favorite song on first listen was I'm Your Man which is super moody and arresting but it's a slow burn and I think the real heart of the album is The Deal.

there’s more than a few indistinguishable mid tempo crooners and alphabet city is a much worse opener than once upon a poolside but the collabs are lovely. the bridgers one especially is miles ahead of either the ones on the last album

I basically judge every National album by the yardstick of Trouble Will Find Me, and I think Smoke Detector feels like it's from an alternate dimension where they've been releasing albums that were as good as TWFM for ten years.

I really dislike it. It's just more rambling boring songs. They have completely lost their groove as a band. It's totally gone.

(Smoke Detector is legit great though)

Other than it taking over an hour to get into the loving venue (there has to be a better parking system), the Death Cab/Postal Service show was super fun. They sounded great and the crowd was super into it.

That sounds like a dream lineup.

I've seen MM around 8 times, and it's always been a good show regardless of the venue size. In Raleigh, Isaac jumped into the crowd to headlock a dude harassing a woman and deliver him to security. The band just kept playing the riff for Tiny Cities Made of Ashes until he got back.

Then in Atlanta on the We Were Dead tour, their encore was a 23 minute jam where they did wild mashups of their songs while folks from the crowd danced on stage.

On the train to Leeds to see the National tonight. I do like Laugh Track, very strong. It’s very National-y.

Took a peek at the dublin set list, I’m not precious about knowing what I will see, and it’s nearly three hours of divorced dad wine addicted energy. Legit can’t wait.

Also soccer mommy are supporting which I am equally excited about. I love everything she does.

Underscores has a new album out called Wallsocket and it's pretty good! Definitely has that underscores sound (the particular sound of voice modulation underscores uses is so distinctive and lovely), but goes in a more indie direction than pop, continuing the trend between fishmonger and fearmonger.

Highlights include:

Uncanny Long Arms (ft Jane Remover)- it's already a good song. Then it starts to swell and you realize there's still a minute left and wham, the last bit. A wonderful expansion of Kinkos field trip 2006 from fishmonger.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYpKQ65DugI

Locals (Girls Like Us) (with gabby start)- these two work well together and that makes this song very fun. It feels like it goes in a very different direction for gabby starts part of the song, but not in a bad way!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9zDeHOAP_g

Johnny Johnny Johnny- tw: grooming. This song is explicitly about grooming. It feels weird putting this song as a highlight. It's a highlight sonically, and while it's lyrics are powerful, it's not a pleasant song to listen to (which kind of feels like the point). On an album with two other former members of the FROMTHEHEART collective, this song feels especially poignant.
