Yeah, I found another article talking about just starting with the box of Custodes Guard, making the Leader a dude with a sword and board because those are tankier, leaving yourself the fifth dude to build as you see fit (I'm thinking of just using the banner dude, so that way I can magnetize to have the S&B, the polearm, or the banner and shield in case I want to start an actual Custodes army), and beginning tactics.

I'd just seen this roster chart and noticed it was a lot of dudes, and that even if I got a box of both the Custodes Guard and the Sisters of Silence, that I'd still be short like, 5 models. Not only that, but having a box of each is a full kill team, regardless of how I'd want to build (given a fire team is only 2 Custodes or 5 Sisters, and I get two of them). Covermeinsunshine's response confused the poo poo out of me, though. They're talking about running specialists and special weapons, and admittedly, I don't have the Sisters box yet, so they might have some, but the Custodes don't. Dunno if they thought I was talking about IG when I mentioned Guard, but I was referring to this Custodes Guard Squad.

So I'll admit up front I don't know the roster rules with 100% confidence because I've mostly ignored them myself. What I am about to say may be flawed. But here's the situation in my understanding:

You pick your faction. Your faction offers a variety of dudes that can be on the team, and frequently some of those dudes have variable weapon options. To make a roster you write a list of 20 possible dudes from your faction with their particular weapon selections. Example for Custodes

1. Guard with sword and board
2. Guard with sword and board again
3. Guard with spear
4. Sister with flamer
5. Sister with great sword
6. Sister with bolter
7. Sister with bolter again
8. Sister with bolter again
[And so on]
20. Sister with flamer again

Then when you start a match you select operatives to deploy from the roster, obeying your faction rules (in Custodes' case the "mix and match 2 fire teams of Guard/SoS"). So the idea is if you couldn't fit every possible combination of operatives in 20 picks you might be barred from taking certain team comps. For Custodes you'd spend 4 roster slots on Sword Guard so you'd be allowed to deploy 4 Sword Guard if you wanted and then 4 slots on Spear Guard, and then you'd need 10 slots for Sword Sister, 10 for flamer Sister, and 10 for bolter Sister if you wanted to be able to do all-Sister team comps but whoops you're well past 20 picks!

I think the roster rules are very stupid. As I understand them. Don't get the purpose of the restriction on team comps.

Anyway, this is all to say again that you really needn't worry about buying many boxes of models to have 20 distinct physical objects for the roster. Just magnetize and you can get away with owning 4 Custodes and 5 Sisters (to repeat you'd need 10 Sisters magnetized to be able to select any possible team comp but I assume you're never going to want to play 10 Sisters). You can write whatever on your roster and still flex the models to represent 'em in play.

They are pretty cheap, but factor in two armies plus terrain and it isn't nothing. I'm in Canada's Appalachia, but even here houses are very pricey, I can only just afford a small "starter" house. My partner would murder me if I bought another game system right now. We both wargame and really want to build a sweet game room with a 6x4 table, a house will let us, just need to be good until then.

Seems there was a major misprint in the rule book, they pushed release back until an undetermined time. There is surely more to it than that, but that is all I know for sure.

drat, must be one hell of a misprint to justify reprinting them instead of just pushing through and issuing an errata.

Rumors were that it was something along the lines of quoting the 14 words. No idea if that was true, but yeah, it must have been something big to have to totally reprint and push the date back. Especially considering how much hype got built up.

It's more likely that it was just placeholder text. There's no evidence of anything bad except for one rumor from some random source.

The 30k books leaked early and they were full of poo poo like every picture of a marine was named Chapter Master Klord Empion or tanks were silhouettes rather than painted models. I wouldn't be surprised if the wrong pdf got sent to the printers.

Virtual Russian

Yeah, as I said, that was the big rumor. I'd think I'd have to be something more subtle than a mixed up PDF, surely GW would catch something like placeholders everywhere from the wrong pdf in a proof. That doesn't mean it is something controversial though, it could just be something in the rules so messed up a day one errata wouldn't be acceptable to them.

edit: pausing for reflection, this is GW, it could totally be the wrong PDF.

I've heard the serious misprint story from two people I know who have connections to separate previewers, so I'm comfortable with it being exactly as dumb as sending the wrong PDF version to print.

In other news, here is a cool plastic model that I want to own.

Aren't the books printed in China?

Downside of having a non-English speaking workforce is they are less likely to go "uhhh boss I think there's something wrong here..."

Generally, but apparently it's really common for them to get stuff done in the UK when time is pressing, it just costs more. In this particular instance I imagine it will cost a lot more because it will be an urgent rush job.

Yeah, I was suggesting having them outsourced might have bitten them in the rear end since a Chinese printer is probably less likely to question a weird looking pdf vs someone local to the UK.

They only ones I've ever seen are the ones packed in with Ash Wastes and the rules for those were apparently such a clusterfuck that it put off the local group entirely. Combine that with the also-hosed vehicle rules and everyone just wrote off anything bigger than an Ambot.

I mean, printers aren't paid to be proofers or editors. If a client sends a file (especially if they've got a working relationship anyway,) the printer probably isn't going to push back and say "Are you sure you want this copy to go to print?"

It's a fair point and I guess it would depend on how egregious the error was but if a client sent something that looked completely wrong I would have thought any professional would have raised a query. Doubly so if it's a massive print run and the customer could raise a stink.

Actually wouldn't the printers have done a proof final copy first for approval? If that somehow passed muster but there was major errors in the actual run then I wonder what confluence of disasters led to it.

I have not had the chance to really play any Ash Wastes games yet, but yeah I have the starter box Orlock quads, two Wolfquads, two converted walkers, and 8 bikers for my Orlock gang. I also have a ridge runner and a couple big converted vehicles that are more gang-agnostic.

My overall impression was that non-vehicle Necromunda is still a more popular way to play, but plenty of people are enthused by the Mad Max isms and modelling possibilities of vehicles, I've not seen any negativity towards it.

Thinking of doing some comparisons between Blood Bowl league management software. Tourplay is probably the best one I’ve used so far, at least as far as automatic tracking of everything and ease of setup for participants, but it costs money which is a definite negative point for some folks.

Anyone have any management software or sites that they use? Right now, I see break.tackle is under development, OBBLM is a good working option that the NAF recommends, and I’m sure there’s other stuff out there that I’m not aware of.

When i worked as a proofer it was my responsibility just to make sure colours were correct, bleed was in place etc etc. If they spelt it Sbace Maribe then maybe I'd raise it with the pre-press folks if it wasn't a rush job, but spelling was the clients responsibility.

New Necromunda Apocrypha, concerning the Hive of Blood, which is sadly not about vampires.

It does give abbreviated rules and guidelines for larger scale games. This might be the kill team but not Kill Team some friends have been waiting for, but I haven't read over anything yet.

That right there is the big question. Either someone is really not good at their job or the proof copy was good, but the deliverable, for whatever reason, was not the approved version. Odds are, we will never know...
