All the cool, good little restaurants were closing and getting bought out to become rich douchebag restaurants. I try and get up there once a year. It hasn't changed much in the past 30 years. Restaurants do come and go, but they've still got all the original fish boils and other local owned joints. They really aren't on a building boom up there. Maybe the people who own the land aren't willing to sell, or there are other restrictions making it untenable

Has anyone mentioned Branson? We went several years ago on an extended family trip because my in laws really wanted to go. There was a toy museum that was kinda cool but had an inexplicable area showing a film on repeat about some author Ronald Reagan really admired. Also weird Christian stuff would pop up randomly in an unprofessional way. IIRC, admission also got you into the BB Gun museum, which is about what you'd expect. Some of the guns had notches on them that the plaque speculated were for squirrels or rabbits the owner had sniped.

House on the Rock did get brought up a couple times, and it's one of the all time great oddball tourist traps. But I don't think anyone mentioned its weirdest architectural feature, the infinity room. At some point, they just stuck a giant suspended hallway onto the side of the house that you can go walk out on to look at the forest below you. It's actually kinda fun, it's a neater view than you might expect from treetop level in a Wisconsin forest.

These days I'm more about the hiking/skiing out there, but we did take my cousins out there last year and did the touristy rounds and had fun.

My family went on a road trip to Glacier National Park when I was like 6 or 7, and as such we saw all the upper midwest tourist trap stuff. Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Wall Drug, the Mitchell Corn Palace, Devil's Tower, etc. My favorite was Reptile Gardens, though. My brother lost a game of Tic Tac Toe to a chicken and a giant tortoise almost stepped on my foot, it was awesome.

I went along with my parents to Atlantic City a lot when I was little. At the Sands Casino, we had to cut through some dirty alleyway from the parking garage. As we were walking my mom suddenly grabbed my shoulder, and I looked down to see my sneaker hovering over a huge pile of poo poo. The casino wasn't much better. Another time we went to a reservation casino, and all I remember is their South Park pinball table had all the bad words censored. What's the point then? e: I mean like, "kill" and "bastards" which is half the reason why the table has a Kenny figure inside it in the first place. \/ Gator lunch if he loses. I like to believe it's the same chicken throughout the years, kicking someone's else's butt at tic-tac-toe. You can't win, here's some more quarters, prove you're smarter than the chicken. Realistically, that chicken was probably a gator lunch.

We did Bear Country a few years back and they had the happiest wolves I've ever seen. They were all piled together in the sun and a black one and white one in the middle were play fighting and wallowing. Didn't get to play with the cubs as you said, but I did get to see a keeper out feeding them. They kept climbing up her legs and she just kept calmly pulling them off and setting them down. They of course started right back up her legs. Treecko posted:The Reptile Gardens slap soo much rear end. The SD tourist traps are just wonderful got some reason!

This has convinced me that Reptile Gardens is a front for some sort of chicken eugenics program to select for progressively smarter chickens Probably some DARPA deal where they're gonna be used for strategic defense. Das Boo posted:Ah, but it was the carving that led me to the area so that I could appreciate it! HaHA! Specifically, the one in South Dakota not far from Mount Rushmore is the Cosmos Mystery Area. I went there too, it was cheesy but fun, if you like tourist traps. https://cosmosmysteryarea.com/ Also, how have people talked this much about South Dakota and not mentioned the Crazy Horse Memorial, a work-in-progress mountain carving of Native American Crazy Horse. It's also not far from Mount Rushmore, worth checking out if you're in the area. The small statue in the foreground gives an idea of the intended design, the large mountain carving in the background has the face completed (which is larger than the heads of Mount Rushmore) and basic blocking of the shape. This photo looks like it's the view from the visitor's center. The carving was commissioned by a Lakota elder, and has been in progress since 1948, and is nowhere near done yet, lol. But it was mostly worked on by like, one dude and his immediate family for decades. It's non-profit and doesn't accept federal or state funding.

Maybe SamG Land counts. It's actually not far from Helen, GA. Long story short, SamG had a heart attack on the toilet and decided he'd rather spend the rest of his life making art. So he turned his girlfriend's yard into, well, this: Its not designed to separate you from your money, no not a tourist trap perse, though SamG does accept donations. Still, roadside attraction. I parked at a gas station and walked into the woods behind it to get there. I walked around for an hour talking to SamG and looking at weird poo poo. 10/10 The man himself:
