aggravated life sentence in prison. it's basically life in solitary afaik :redhammer:
Turkey’s appeals court upholds life sentence for Osman Kavala, four others

quote:

ANKARA — Turkey's top appeals court on Thursday upheld a sentence of life without parole for prominent civil rights activist and philanthropist Osman Kavala and 18-year jail terms for four other activists over their involvement in the 2013 mass anti-government protests.

The sentences of three other activists — Hakan Altinay, Yigit Ekmekci and Mucella Yapici — meanwhile, were overturned in what is dubbed the “Gezi trial,” named after a central Istanbul park where the mass protests broke out in 2013 and morphed into the sole popular uprising against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s rule of more than two decades.

In 2022, Kavala, 65, and seven other activists — Can Atalay, Tayfun Kahraman, Cigdem Mater, Mine Ozerden, Altinay, Ekmekci and Yapici — were found guilty of attempting to overthrow the government through their involvement in the 2013 nationwide anti-government protests.

Speaking after her release from an Istanbul prison, Yapici lashed out at the ruling. “We left our loved ones behind. We need to get them out of there immediately,” she told journalists.

The trial and ensuing sentences turned into an embodiment of Turkey’s democratic backsliding and erosion of judiciary independence.

Emma Sinclair-Webb, Human Rights Watch’s Europe and Central Asia associate director, lamented the ruling on Thursday and described the conviction as “baseless.”

The ruling is “a monstrous abuse of the justice system, proof that courts obey the presidency,” Sinclair-Webb tweeted.

Repeatedly calling on Turkish authorities for the release of Kavala and other activists, the US State Department and the European Union slammed the trial and described it as an attempt to silence dissent in Turkey.

The Council of Europe, Europe’s top human rights body, initiated rarely used infringement proceedings against Turkey in 2021 over Turkish authorities' failure to release Kavala despite a European Court of Human Rights ruling ordering his immediate release. Turkey now risks losing its voting rights and even suspension of membership in the body as part of the procedure.

Kavala, who has been behind bars for more than five years, was shortlisted for the 2023 Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize by the council’s Parliamentary Assembly earlier this month.
it's hard to deny kind of a failed color revolution vibe but I don't think it really influenced the actual protests much. it's worth noting Atalay was recently elected as a deputy from the Workers’ Party of Turkey (TİP) and Altınay is uhh an executive of the Open Society Foundation 👁️

madame secretary finds out that jihadi joe has a rare illness and tricks her brother into sending him medicine so the president can drone strike him madame secretary himself wanted to catch him alive but defends the drone strike to her brother anyway by saying some other guy will become the new exclusive difficult to find medicine courier in syria

digging how this 2015 era show takes the hot button issues of jihadi jane and obama using drone strikes to kill innocent american children and posits ok but what if the drone strikes were directed against jihadi jane instead not so morally indefensible now is it

BAGHDAD - As U.S. troops continue to leave the cities for the rural areas, in accordance with the articles of the Security Agreement, an important first step is just getting to know their new neighbors.

Soldiers with 120th Combined Arms Battalion, 30th Heavy Brigade Combat Team, at Forward Operating Base Mahmudiyah took time to visit their Iraqi neighbors, June 22.

Capt. Sara Woods, with Civil Affairs Team 3,1 conducted a census in the small village just on the north side of the FOB, to learn more about the Iraqis who lived there.

With the help of an interpreter, Woods, of Janesville, Minn., and other Soldiers walked to every nearby home and spent a few moments talking with the families. Soldiers also chatted with residents and shop owners.

"We have never talked with the people here and we wanted to introduce ourselves," said Woods.

The 120th Soldiers asked everyone they met how they felt about living right next to the base.

"Most of the people we talked to said they felt very safe being so close," Woods said, "We all laughed about the big guns going off at night. They said it startles them, and we told them it startles us, too!"

The base has a three-gun firing platoon of 155mm Paladin self-propelled howitzers that occasionally fire for practice or to support troops.

Residents also expressed concerns about the eventual departure of Coalition troops.

Suicide attack on Turkish Interior Ministry

ANKARA, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Two attackers detonated a bomb in front of Turkish government buildings in Ankara on Sunday in an assault that left both of them dead and two police officers wounded, in what authorities called the capital's first terrorist attack in years.

machine translated:
Immortal Battalion carries out action targeting Ministry of Interior

quote:

The Headquarters Command of the People's Defense Center announced that a team affiliated with the Immortal Battalion carried out the martyrdom operation against the Ministry of Interior in Ankara on the opening day of the Turkish Parliament.

Today, around 09:30, a martyrdom operation has been carried out by one of our teams affiliated with our Immortal Battalion against the premises of the TC Ministry of Interior. This action, being carried out on the opening day of the Parliament, in a place very close to the Parliament, against a massacre and torture center, was especially envisioned and has occurred smoothly just as planned. This martyrdom operation, which has been completely successful by our activist comrades clearing the gate and entering inside, has reached its goal. However, as always, the AKP-MHP fascist regime has chosen to shamelessly deny the losses experienced in this action, with great disrespect to the public and the public opinion. Everyone should know that, if the members of the Immortal Battalion had wanted, by making a small change in the time of action, they could have led to very different results. However, such a choice has consciously not been made, and adherence to the main goal of delivering the necessary message to the relevant places and warning them seriously has been maintained.

The action that took place is a legitimate defense action intended as a warning against the inhumane practices and isolation policies developed in all prisons in Turkey and Kurdistan that trample human rights, disregarding national and international laws, against the use of chemical weapons prohibited by universal war laws on our guerrilla forces, against the plunder and massacre of Kurdistan's nature and the fascist pressures on the people of Kurdistan and all democratic circles. If the genocidal fascist AKP-MHP regime continues to commit these crimes, the legitimate actions of revolutionary justice will also continue.

Especially, this meaningful act of heroism, which took place on the opening day of the Parliament, is attributed to the memory of our comrades who fell as martyrs, including Axîn Mûş (Hülya Demirer), our Amed Provincial Commander, who once personally commanded the Immortal Battalion. This great and historic action has been carried out by our comrades Rojhat Zilan and Erdal Şahin. We respectfully and gratefully commemorate the immortal Apoist martyrs who carried out this action, congratulate these heroic activists and all comrades who contributed to this action, and wish them continued success. We announce that we will share the detailed identity information of the brave and martyr militants of the Immortal Battalion who carried out this heroic action with the public later, and we offer our respects.
:rip: to the immortals and the 24-year-old veterinarian they killed in the hijacking.

I remember watching Adnan’s videos off his YouTube channel and they were all totally batshit insane. way crazier than anything on American televangelism. the women always looked like they were hit with Homer’s makeup gun and they were constantly transfixed on Adnan like he was Mohammad in the flesh.
