sudonim posted:It's already been covered that they're herbivores but modern thinking considers beaver damming behavior a good thing for the most part. They change ecosystems in a way that a lot more things can move in. There was some town in California that 2000ish stopped discouraging beaver dams and as a result had river otters move back in for the first time in like a century. Yeah the wetlands they create by damming are incredibly diverse. They do kill trees, but it opens up tons of niches for other plants, animals, and insects.

I was hiking in the middle of the forest - no trails, just tromping through the forest. And I crest a hill and see a perfectly defined trail. Which was alarming at first, because I was in the middle of the forest, nothing led to this trail. I follow it down the hill, and it goes directly into water, which looks like a canal. I follow the canal and it leads to a giant beaver dam, 10 feet high, 100 feet long, huge. I walked on top of it. This trail was so the beavers could find specific trees, drag them down the hill and then float them up the canal to their humongous dam. All in the middle of nowhere. My eyes were opened that day about what the beavers are doing out there.

Speaking of England and Beavers, here's a good David Attenborough video on them. My favorite part is toward the end with the over-winter muskrat tenants who pay rent with "furniture" upkeep. For those who worry about the sort of thing, this is a cute video where no critters get rekt.

flubber nuts posted:this sounds pretty magical and im hella jealous. It was eye opening. I became kinda obsessed with these beavers as I lived in this cabin in the woods for 8 months and hiked pretty much every day. But the area these beavers flooded - I called it "The Beaver Wasteland" - was vast, so I did a lot of exploring trying to find a relatively dry path through it, otherwise I'd have to go way out of the way to get to the other side. I never found one, other than walking directly on the beaver dam. Which I did quite a bit, but it was always a bit nerve wracking, as it's just beaver construction, and their HUGE lodge was close by, and I was never sure if they'd get pissed at me. They never did.

They’ve got the same surname, so were presumably related. In happier news, a family of Scottish beavers has now moved in.
