Fairey Firefly FR.1 PP433: "281/P" of 827 Squadron, HMS Triumph. Substantially damaged 29/8/1950 in a deck landing accident on board HMS Triumph when the carrier was in Japanese waters off Hiroshima, when the arrestor hook failed to lower and aircraft collided with safety barrier. According to an eyewitness report (see link #3):

"An unhappy incident took place on 29th August 1950 when Lt. Cdr MacLachlan, the Commanding Officer of 800 Squadron, became the only aircrew fatality of HMS Triumph's entire Korean tour, as he was mortally injured in a freak accident. He had been in the carrier's operation room inside the Island when a Firefly (believed to be PP433 flown by Lt Bridgeman) crashed into the barrier outside on the deck, and fragments of the propeller flew through an open porthole and struck him as he stood inside. He was later buried at sea with full Military honours; Lt Cdr Handley took over as C.O. of 800 (Seafire) Squadron"

Definitely not a Fulmar, single canopy. The wings don't look clipped to me, but the video quality is so poor (for obvious reasons) that I can't tell for sure.

So I did actual research on this, the general term for the eyeballs extending out of the socket is "globe luxation". An event that causes the eye to completely blast free of the skull would be described as a "traumatic globe luxation with globe avulsion", violent eye popping with tearing of the connecting tissues. Big TW if you search for any of this, the pictures are gnarly if eye trauma fucks with you it sure does for me and I have no idea why I decided to pursue this :gonk:

So the things are no longer in my possession since yesterday evening and I haven't heard anything about possible radiation. But there's probably a powder in there, under a thin plastic film (I haven't tried it myself to see if that's the case). Fuel paste could therefore be the logical conclusion. If I hear anything, I'll post it here immediately. Maybe there is someone in the English Fred of the same name who finds these things familiar.

Or in Italy where a cargo container with a very small but very hot stray showed up: https://www.wired.co.uk/article/mystery-box

quote:

In Italy, all cargo containers carrying scrap metal get checked by hand for radiation, before they're allowed off the docks. At Voltri, this job falls to Montagna, a 49-year-old independent consultant certified by the Italian government. By the time he arrived, longshoremen had gathered eleven six-metre-long, 2.5-metre-wide containers, relying on manifests to determine which ones needed to be scanned. The boxes were lined up near the terminal's entrance.

Montagna grabbed his radiation monitor -- a Ludlum Model 3 about the size of a toaster. He plugged in a sensor wand and set the device down 18 metres away from the containers. The Model 3 emits a beep every time it detects a radioactive particle; Montagna turned it on, and the meter's needle swung past the maximum reading of 500,000 counts per minute. Instead of its usual staccato chirps, the machine was whining continuously and frantically. That didn't worry Montagna; the port's humid air sometimes corroded the connections. He turned the detector off, replaced the cable between the wand and the box with a spare, and turned the device back on.

It started wailing again. Montagna was being bathed in radiation.

One of the containers in front of him held a lethal secret, but was that secret merely a slow-motion radioactive industrial accident, or a bomb -- one that could destroy the 24 kilometre waterfront? Montagna ran to his car to get a less sensitive detector. He didn't think about protection; at those levels, he would have needed lead armour 12cm thick to stand within a metre of the source for long.

Add a winch in each bay to raise and lower the vehicles and you have a nice 4 season garage right there. Be sure to install a basketball hoop for the kids/

I met a surgeon who lived up on the mountain here who did something like that. While it doesn't usually get that cold below, it does freeze up on the mountain and his driveway was very steep down by the road. His winter time solution to emergency calls was to install a bollard, with a steel eyelet in it, above where it got steep. The winter car was a Jeep Wrangler with winches fore and aft. Down with the rear winch, up with the front one. Better hope someone else is home while doing this, otherwise he had to trudge up the steps to unhook when leaving.

He later had a little garage dug into his property at the road. Smart guy, just a little too clever for his own good and stingy with money.
